Enabling login with NFTs in your applications

By enabling login with NFTs in your applications, users become their own identity provider and are no longer bound to any centralized entity. With our tutorial, you will learn, step by step, how to make login with NFTs possible in your next.js app.

In this tutorial, we create our own instance of the IDP Kit locally and configure it to check users which want to authenticate for being an owner of a chosen NFT collection. We will register a client, connect our frontend and enable login with NFTs. The frontend builds on Next.js and will use NextAuth.js as authentication library.

The IDP Kit uses the OIDC authentication flow, the same technology used by Sign-in with Apple, Facebook, Twitter and many more. If you want to learn more about it and how it works behind the scenes, you can have a look at our concept section as well as how the ideas are translated when using NFTs. The tutorial is organized into 4 modules:

Modules

IDP Kit Setup — Build and run the project in your local environment.
Client Registration — Retrieve clientId and clientSecret from the IDP Kit, used in the frontend.
NFT Collection Configuration — Set NFT collection required by the users to login successfully.
Next.js — Setup and connect frontend to IDP Kit and enable sign in with NFTs.

SSI-based authentication using Gaia-X Self-Description & OpenPolicyAgent/Rego

Walt.id extended their identity product suite, to now support the Gaia-X ecosystem. Giving you the tools, to onboard, manage and utilize SSI for authentication and access management from web2 to web3. OIDC compliant at it’s root, it can be integrated with apps, existing infrastructure and federated clouds, to only name a few.

In the following sections, you can see how the onboarding to the Gaia-X ecosystem works and how you can build Auth & Access into your OIDC-compliant client.

Gaia-X Ecosystem Onboarding

To participate in the Gaia-X ecosystem, you can use either the SSI Kit CLI or the Web Wallet.

SSI Kit

The SSI Kit from walt.id was extended to now support the onboarding and usage of the Gaia-X trust framework.

Web Wallet

The open-source web-wallet from walt.id can also be used to onboard and participate in the Gaia-X trust framework.

** Auth & access**

Using W3C verifiable credentials from Gaia-X to provide Authentication and access management to your users. Walt.id has extended their IDP Kit, which gives you an OIDC-conform IdP, to now support W3C verifiable credentials from the Gaia-X ecosystem, with the option to dynamically validate Gaia-X SDs using Open Policy Agent.

Integration

Through the IDP Kit from Walt.id which gives us an OIDC-conform IdP, we can now easily integrate it with our OIDC client or any other OIDC complaint infrastructure, e.g. KeyCloak or Sovereign Cloud Stack.
