There were many big announcements this week, one of the most exciting being Biomes' “Alpha Release.”

The biggest update since launching on mainnet in May 2024, Alpha includes several major gameplay updates.

One includes the release of “The Bazaar,” a marketplace where players can trade resources via smart item chests for SUB. SUB is an ERC-20 that players receive from completing intro quests and is designed to kickstart the Biomes economy.

A second is “real-time movement.” 

Previously, players could only move across the map by dragging along their rover, a robot companion, via a point-and-click mechanic.

Now, the rover is gone (RIP to real one), and players can move freely just like in Minecraft.

While it has some quirks, the new movement system is exponentially smoother and is a massive quality of life upgrade for players.

Due to constraints like high latency, FOCGs have always had a challenge with movement.

Biomes now has the best I’ve seen, and represents a huge level up for the entire ecosystem that puts FOCGs far closer to parity with Web2 games. 

It’s still early – Onchain games are literally learning to walk.

But it’s a major step in the right direction.

“The actual crypto part needs to disappear in the background.” - Me (too often).

I hate it when people say this (especially when I do). 

It’s a tired cliché, and maybe it’s true. 

While many are still trying to figure out how to make blockchain invisible, Gunzilla Games with Off the Grid seems to have done it — maybe too well.

The “Next-Gen Cyberpunk F2P Extraction Royale” is crushing its go-to-market strategy. Crypto Twitter is both docile and ablaze, a rare combination indeed. 

Outside CT, it seems to have hit a mainstream nerve. The Ninja/Tatman/Scump trad-streamer industrial complex is involved, rallying the normie kids.

I haven’t kept much track of trad-streamers lately, but it seems they genuinely like the game. The chasm between paid promotion and authenticity has always been nebulous, but Off the Grid rides the line well.

So what’s the catch?

Well—for starters—less than 100% of the game logic is hosted onchain.

Look, I’ll confess that I play offchain games all the time (I know that’s blasphemy).

And while Web3 games are cool, titles that only dabble in crypto mechanics don’t maximize the affordances that blockchain offers players. 

Off the Grid runs a slick marketing campaign, but let’s face it—less than 100% onchain logic makes it another missed opportunity for deeper player ownership and control.

But actually, I’m unconvinced this game has any relation to crypto at all, given its broadly successful marketing campaign and the fact that the word-soup description in their Twitter bio fails to even dog-whistle the crypto part.

Then you go check their website. Nothing.

Furthermore, their marketplace isn’t even that integral to the experience.

Yes, the game looks awesome. But it feels more like a traditional title with a veneer of crypto. 

Pushing the blockchain elements into the background strips away what makes onchain gaming so revolutionary: the ability for players to genuinely own, govern, and shape the game world.

Fully onchain games offer players unprecedented control with the promise of emergent economies and mechanics—instead of just using blockchain as a garnish.

So now that my dreams have come true, and the crypto has “disappeared into the background,” I’m livid.

Where’s the M*taM*ask pop-up? Where’s the unintuitive UX and prohibitive learning curve?

Trad-gamers might not be ready for full-blown onchain integration. But in earnest, it’s probably a really good thing that games like Off the Grid can ease the public consciousness into hearing the word ‘NFT’ again. 

Maybe crypto needs to re-enter the gaming space quitely, a subtle nudge here and there.

But the future is fully onchain, and anything less is just a stepping stone.

Normies and Crypto have a deeply toxic relationship. And maybe Off the Grid is the tasteful thirst trap that gets the normies to slide back in. 

Slowly, then all at once.

Outside the FOCG ecosystem, we also had some interesting comments from FaZe Banks.

On a podcast with the Nelk Boys, Banks described a hypothetical GTA with a token that used crypto to enable players to own in-game real estate, create shops, sell merch, and form other types of businesses.

As a massive GTA fan, Bank’s vision sounds sick. It’s basically “the metaverse,” but not in a scammy or cringe way. A game like that would be fun af. 

In practice, however, the quickest and best way to make it a reality is through fully onchain games.

As their game logic is onchain, FOCGs can tap into the crypto liquidity at every level of the game rather than just via items and assets. This will help create far larger, more expansive, and diverse economies.

Furthermore, anyone can create the types of businesses that Banks mentions without permission and without the platform or censorship risk associated with operating in a world hosted by a centralized game studio.

Finally, a fully onchain game world will exist for as long as its host blockchain exists, imbuing the game world with more value and creating a more stable foundation to build.

The cool part (and one that people sleep on) is that this is already happening today.

Numerous FOCG teams, such as Pirate Nation, Biomes, Realms: Eternum, Primodium, and Kamigotchi are building in a similar direction toward the open-world, open economy that Banks describes.

While we don’t know if any will ultimately capitalize on this enormous opportunity, the future is coming faster than we think.

I attended demo day in person and was extremely impressed by the presenting teams.

A few standouts were the Realms ecosystem projects, including the MMO Eternum, the dueling game Pistols at Ten Blocks, and Loot Survivor 1.5 from Provable Games. 

Another was Octoguns, a fully onchain FPS!

All in all, demo day is further proof of the substantial increase in the quality of FOCGs over the past 18 months.

Games are becoming more fun, smooth, and accessible, with infrastructure like the Cartridge Controller enabling gamers to onboard without a wallet via Apple Pay.

Furthermore, more and more genres are now coming onchain.

(Again, we now have a fully onchain FPS!)

The foundation is being laid to grow the number of players in the space exponentially and provide high-quality gaming experiences.

Now, it's just a matter of reaching them.

The game is built using a combination of Lattice’s MUD framework and CCP's Carbon engine, which they plan to open source.

This is undeniably awesome to crypto natives and a watershed moment for the space.

…But the trad-gamers hate it.

Unsurprisingly, the uniquely irritable gaming community has pulled no punches with their criticism of CCP Games.

The expected vitriol from the incumbent gaming class fails to see this move for what it is: using tech to empower what makes a game great in the first place.

EVE achieved massive success throughout the 2000s by building a non-linear sandbox that offered players expressivity and discretion with how they played the game.

The result?

Emergent gameplay dynamics, complex political and economic systems, and ultimately player agency.

The fullest expression of EVE involves massive battles, with thousands of players competing in real-time for scarce resources with real-world value.

The thesis holds that building on a more open, modular, and composable framework (i.e., blockchain) doubles down on a world where player expression defines the universe.

Emergence? Bullish.

Emergence + Player Agency + AAA gameplay?

Unprecedented.

Anybody Problem

Anybody Problem is a puzzle game built by Trifle Life.

In the game, you’ll complete a set of five point-and-click puzzles by destroying monsters (Baddies) while attempting to avoid a large, moving creature (Body).

While Anybody Problem’s game logic lives offchain, it verifies player results onchain via zkSNARKs.

If you’re a tryhard like myself, you can attempt to speedrun through this gauntlet and attempt to top the in-game leaderboard.

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing this week, as I’ve been relentlessly grinding to try and come in first.

Despite setting some personal records, I’ve faced fierce competition from Trifle Intern, iezzi, Billy Rennekamp (the game’s creator) and our frenemies at [WE], denying me the top spot.

Despite my shortcomings, the game is addicting.

It’s simple, fast-paced, and great for brainrotted zoomers with flea-sized attention spans like myself.

I’m excited to keep playing and for Anybody Problem to be the next onchain battlefield in the storied WASD vs [WE] rivalry.

Cards are a new feature that up the stakes and drama in this season. The proceeds from minting them accrue to a prize pool that’s distributed to holders based on the points a hero scores.

We’re only two days in, but our hero has been minted 18 times (the most of any) and is fourth in points.

The competition will run September 4-5, where players will battle to win an NFT trophy, Season 2 pass, and discounted entry to the “Super Bowl,” Duper’s end-of-season, high-stakes tournament.

We’ll also stream the finals game on the 5th on Twitch and X. 

The tourney should be a ton of fun and a great way to learn the game if you’re new or practice for the Bowl if you’re a ranked vet.

In broader news, this week demonstrated that teams continue to innovate at the gameplay and infrastructure levels.

For instance, Biomes introduced an ERC-20, SUB, backed by in-game resources. Meanwhile, Primodium continued to test its new trading mechanics in its Empire's playtest. 

I’m very excited by this experimentation around financialization, which is key to onboarding crypto natives into the space. 

On the infra side, Pirate Nation’s launch of Boss Chain, their second Arbitrum Orbit L3 alongside Apex, was another noteworthy release. 

As Pirate Nation will now be the first FOCG to run on multiple chains, Proof Of Play is testing the waters (pun intended) on a new way to scale games and possibly all other kinds of dapps.

Overall, these releases underscore a point in one of my earliest newsletters: Onchain games are at the cutting edge of crypto.

Where they go, the rest of the industry will follow.

Between playtesting Primodium and trying out Anbody Problem and Dappmon, WASD players were busy grinding For the Kingdom.

One guild member, Jota, shot up the MMORPG’s in-game leaderboard, reaching Level 100, the second-highest rank of any player in the game.

Jota went on a warpath to reach his spot, participating in over 20,000 PvE battles against creatures and 42 against other players. 

One of those PvP battles includes a victory over FTK developer Artwoooood, earning him the “Dev Slayer” role in the game’s Discord.

He’s now the second WASD player with that prestigious title, alongside Olamide, who himself slots in at 11th on the leaderboard.

Kooshaba, the real-time strategy game’s co-creator and lead developer, will own the Sky Key, an NFT that controls key gameplay and economic parameters.

He'll also continue developing the game from his own studio.

As the name suggests, the game world will run persistently onchain, with players able to access all heroes, maps, and match types. 

The Orb () economy will also remain unchanged, with the match creation cost fixed at 100 while maintaining the current emissions curve.

Autonomous mode not only represents a major change to the Sky Strife experience but demonstrates what’s uniquely possible with fully onchain games.

Because the game logic exists entirely onchain, Sky Strife can run without any dev maintaining it or human intervention.

In theory, it could remain in autonomous mode forever (or at least as long as Redstone exists).

Applying this level of decentralization to a game is undeniably cool and exciting. It’s an extremely interesting design space that has barely begun to be explored.

(Yes, we’re unironically early.)

All in all, I’m incredibly excited to see how things play out. 

Sky Strife remains one of my favorite onchain games alongside Primodium, and I’m hyped for Kooshaba (an absolute chad) to fully take the reigns.

Mainstream crypto continually sleeps on onchain gaming, but experiments like this are why it remains the most exciting niche in the space.

This round saw the introduction of unions, which are in-game teams similar to alliances in Primodium. 

WASD had a union of its own, led by Hope and comprised of six other guild members, including Jota, oVermillion, inoob, cypherbadger, and when_df.

After six days of fierce competition to capture planets and intense negotiations with other unions, we emerged victorious, taking home a first-place finish, an Epic Ares NFT, and a $650 cash prize.

It’s been a big week for onchain gaming.

• Cartridge and Duper each announced major raises, raking in $7.5M and $8.7M, respectively.

• There were several key infrastructure announcements, including the release of MUD v2.1 and the reveal of Tonk’s Speakeasy, a private onchain messaging system.

• For The Kingdom and Kamigotchi released new updates, while JC won Force Prime Grand Season III and brought WASD its second-ever guild championship.

Overall, it’s been an incredibly exciting few days for the ecosystem.

As I mentioned above, this week was headlined by JC winning Grand Season III of Force Prime Heroes.

Grand Season III was a multi-week event for the strategy game, where players could complete campaign maps and compete against each other in tournaments to earn season points.

JC emerged from this onchain gauntlet with a decisive victory, earning 4920 season points, 900 more than the second-place finisher.

This is another title in a legendary run, as he also won Grand Seasons I and II.

Congratulations to JC on the three-peat and for bringing home WASD’s second guild championship. I can’t wait to see if he’ll make it four in a row in season IV!

Primodium v0.11.1 is now in the books.

While we didn’t repeat after our v0.11 championship, we nonetheless had another strong showing, finishing as the 2nd highest scoring alliance.

I especially want to shoutout Canzi, Samurai6, Jota, oVerMillion, and Jack Longarzo who put in incredible performances, with each slotting in the Top 20 in Primodium scored!

As I mentioned last week, this round was considered a “building round” for WASD.

We released our first sponsored plugin, Andromeda, built by Duck.

It offers public alliance data dashboards and a quest system and is the first of many cool plugins that we’ll be shipping.

For The Kingdom is an MMORPG built using MUD.

In the game, you’ll complete quests, mine resources, craft items, fight monsters, and battle other players in PvP combat.

To get started, you’ll join and explore one of four different kingdoms (Sylvanreach, Mysthaven, Everfrost, and Sunscar). Each kingdom has its own lore, backstory, and primary resources that it holds.

(Many WASD players have joined Sunscar, fwiw)

After you select a kingdom, you’ll then be able to start questing, earning XP, and leveling up your character.

For The Kingdom is live and playable today, as the team is holding a public playtest on the Redstone Garnet testnet.

For The Kingdom has a lot of potential.

The core gameplay is engaging and fun despite being a playtest. I’m a picky gamer and churn quickly through new games, but I’ve been playing For the Kingdom throughout the week.

That said, the mechanics of questing, combat, etc., are all early in their development process and could use more refinement.

Beyond gameplay, For The Kingdom's graphics stand out.

The game looks polished, and I really like the art style. Colors pop off the screen, which helps immerse me in the game while enhancing the overall experience.

The team has also done a great job answering questions and responding to player feedback.

All in all, I’m very bullish on For the Kingdom and excited to keep playing!

WASD is very excited to announce the results of our rewards distribution for Primodium v0.10!

For this round, we’re airdropping 907.75 OP tokens to 20 guild members who participated in our alliances.

Each alliance member will also receive a commemorative NFT designed by Bushi, and the top-scoring player will take home a 1/1 trophy.

Here’s a breakdown of the distribution for this round and everything else you need to know.

Before diving into the distribution, here’s some background on WASD Rewards (Formerly known as WASD Guild Rewards).

WASD is distributing a portion of the OP tokens we received from Round 3 of Optimism’s RPGF to our members who compete in various onchain games.

We began this initiative in the previous Primodium round (v0.09.1), where we airdropped 350 OP to the 11 highest-scoring players in our in-game alliance.

We’re continuing this program for the current Primodium round (v0.10), future ones (v0.11 and beyond), and plan to extend it to other titles.

We had two overarching goals when it came to the distribution criteria for v0.10:

1. Reward our top players and those who dedicate significant time to the game

2. Reward players who actively contribute towards the alliance’s strategic goals

In that vein, rewards are split into two buckets:

1. Performance Rewards (700 OP)

2. Quest Rewards (207.75 OP)

Performance Rewards are allocated as follows:

1. All WASD and WASD2 members who scored over 100 million points at the time of the snapshot will receive 7 OP (Baseline Rewards).

2. The remaining Performance Rewards budget is distributed to these players proportionally based on their share of the total points scored by WASD and WASD2 (Bonus Rewards).

Quest rewards are allocated based on the completion and logging of tasks like conquering asteroids and upgrading bases. Each task was assigned an OP bounty that corresponded to its significance within the game.

We plan to continue using this high-level distribution framework for the upcoming Primodium round (v0.11).

However, we may tweak individual parameters (e.g., the baseline reward amount) as we see fit.

Based on the above criteria, 22 accounts (belonging to 20 players) exceeded the 100 million point threshold and thus qualified for rewards.

Each of these accounts will receive 7 OP in Baseline Rewards. This comes out to 154 OP, ~17% of the total distribution.

The remaining 546 OP in the Performance Rewards budget (~60% of the total distribution) will be allocated to players proportionally based on their share of the combined 23.97 billion points scored by WASD and WASD2.

(This figure excludes the points scored by WASD team members.)

Finally, the remaining 207.75 OP (~23% of the total distribution) will be allocated to players via Quest Rewards. 14 members participated in this and complete a combined 175 quests.

The distribution results can be seen below:

NOTE: OP and the commemorative NFT will be sent directly to your wallet.

You will NOT have to claim or interact with anything.

It was an incredibly exciting week in the onchain gaming ecosystem.

There were many big news items, but the most noteworthy came from Lattice, which kicked off its “Race to Mainnet” initiative for Redstone.

First announced in November 2023, Redstone is an in-development L2 built using OP Stack by Lattice.

Yesterday, the team announced that Redstone is beginning its “developer preview,” during which teams will be able to deploy and test their games.

The preview will last throughout April and culminate with Redstone’s public launch on May 1.

Numerous projects, including Downstream, This Cursed Machine, Biomes, ggQuest, and Sky Strife, will participate in the preview and then launch on May 1.

In exciting news, WASD will be one of the three groups playtesting these games on the L2 during this period!

All in all, I’m incredibly excited for Redstone’s release and think its launch will be one of the most significant events in the ecosystem’s history.

I expect the network to become a leading venue for onchain games due to its low transaction costs, latency, support from Lattice, and ties to the Optimism ecosystem.

As such, I expect many more games besides the ones listed above to deploy on Redstone in the months after it goes live.

The race to mainnet is on – And all us onchain gamers will be the winners.

Force Prime Heroes (FPH) is a turn-based strategy game.

Inspired by the Heroes of Might and Magic series, your objective in the game is to defeat a monster known as the “Bone Dragon” in as few turns as possible.

To do so, you’ll have to strategically plan and move across a map while collecting gold from chests, defeating monsters, and purchasing units to aid in your conquest.

FPH is built using Dojo and Unity and periodically hosts tournaments where you can compete and earn prizes.

Today, they just wrapped their most recent one, “Blitz,” in which players had one hour to post the highest score to win a commemorative NFT.

Overall, I’m a really big fan of Force Prime Heroes.

The game is a lot of fun, with a good strategic depth.

You have to methodically plot the most efficient course through the map while balancing numerous factors like your gold on hand, the health of an enemy you want to defeat, and the composition of your units.

I also like the competitive side of the game, as the team regularly hosts tournaments while the leaderboard gives you an added incentive to grind and play multiple times.

Despite this, I do think there’s room for improvement with regard to pacing.

For instance, Force Prime Heroes can feel a bit slow to someone like me who appreciates the fast and aggressive gameplay commonplace in today's games.

Along these lines, I think there could be some more random encounters or events in the game to shake things up and add an element of suspense.

Nonetheless, I enjoy Force Prime Heroes and am excited for their next tournament!

My goal when I began this journey over 8 months ago was to onboard as many people as I could into onchain games.

That mission has not changed (my bullishness on this space has grown exponentially since), but my tactics have.

The game we’ve focused our efforts on the most in March was Primodium.

Primodium is a fully onchain space MMO and resource management game. In it, your goal is to score points by producing resources, building factories, and battling other players.

The game’s latest release, v0.10, is live and playable on a Caldera testnet.

We’ve been covering (and playing) Primodium since way back in August 2023. It’s improved dramatically since – And so has our alliance!

Our two squads, WASD & WASD2, sit at 3rd and 5th for v0.10 respectively, with the former having captured the second most asteroids of any alliance.

We’ve also doubled our total member count since last round from ~20 to ~40.

As in v0.09, this round we’re distributing Optimism tokens to alliance members who reach a minimum of 100 million points.

Individual allocations are not yet final, but so far we’ve had 19 players qualify for these rewards!

In addition, starting in v0.10, we introduced the opportunity to earn additional OP by completing in-game quests and bot bounties.

The fight’s not over – But I’ve had a ton of fun playing with everyone this round.

Although we’re haven’t (yet) reached out goal of finishing in first, we’ve leveled up considerably.

I can’t wait to continue improving and to keep things rolling when v0.11 drops!

Sky Strife is a MUD-based RTS developed by Lattice.

In the game, you compete in 2-4 player, PvP matches where you have to capture opponents bases while protecting your own.

Sky Strife just wrapped up its final testnet season (0.3), which ran from March 19-29 on Redstone Holesky.

This was the final persistent, playtest for the game on testnet!

Like Primodium, we’ve been Sky Strifing since August 2023, and it’s been remarkable to see how far it’s come.

In prior seasons, we hosted competitions, like “The WASD Cup” and “World Sky League.”

While there were no WASD events in 0.3, our guild members were nonetheless active.

One, James.eth, even had the highest win rate (70.9%) of any player during the season who competed in at least 20 matches!

Furthermore, he, along with fellow WASD teammates Hope, iNoob59, and ProofOfJoker, each placed in the Top-20 in total matches won across all testnet seasons.

Gg to them and all WASD members who are cleaning up in Sky Strife.

I can’t wait for everyone to keep battling when the game launches on mainnet!

A new game that we started playing last month was Tarochi.

As discussed last week, Tarochi is an onchain RPG built by Paima Studios with the Paima Engine.

Deployed on XAI, in the game, you’ll explore, complete quests, capture, and battle monsters.

Tarochi is currently in the midst of Season 1, its first mainnet release.

WASD has begun gearing up for the upcoming Guild Event teased by the team, and so far has brought 5 players into the fold.

While we’re having a ton of fun with Primodium, Sky Strife, and Tarochi, we want to establish a presence in every onchain game world.

Beyond these three, we’re also looking at playing:

• Words3

• Force Prime Heroes

• Duper

• Loot Survivor

• Pirate Nation

I’m very excited to announce our first member of the month: Hope!

Hope joined us during this Primodium round and has been crushing it.

She’s our top-ranked player, and as of writing is the 4th highest scoring player in the entire game!

She’s also been dominating in Sky Strife, and has the second most wins all-time of any player at 113, and with a win rate of 77.03%.

GG and great job Hope!

As you can see, March was a big month for WASD.

We had ton of fun playing Primodium, Sky Strife, and Tarochi, and can’t wait to see what April has in store.

I’m very proud of what our members accomplished, and want to thank everyone for their contributions.

As Ben has covered in the most recent WASD Weekly, the onchain gaming ecosystem has been popping off.

Over the past several weeks, numerous new games have launched, while existing ones have shipped updates and dropped new playtests.

As Ben tweeted last week, we may soon hit a point where there’s an onchain game for everyone.

I certainly agree with his take, and I’ll show you why today by taking you through my three favorite onchain games.

Will you agree with my picks?

Let’s get into it and find out!

SAGE Labs is a space MMO built on Solana and a part of the Star Atlas ecosystem.

As I wrote in my piece on it earlier this year, you can think of SAGE as “Star Atlas V0,” as it has the same economy and assets as the “main” game but in a simplified form and with fully onchain game logic.

In SAGE, your goal is to establish dominance over the galaxy by exploring, mining resources, engaging in space combat, crafting items, and more.

You’ll do so while also building out a fleet of ships, which are represented by NFTs and serve as the backbone of your imperial conquests as they can be used in these different tasks.

Like Star Atlas, SAGE has a complex in-game economy anchored by two tokens: POLIS, a governance token, and ATLAS, a utility token used as a medium of exchange in the in-game marketplace.

SAGE is currently playable on mainnet, and the developer team is set to continue adding new features over the coming months.

As someone who likes MMOs, I’ve had a lot of fun with SAGE.

The game’s economy is the most extensive of any I’ve encountered in an onchain game, with numerous moving parts that are a dream for spreadsheet-oors to map out.

(You’ll need to use them and other community tools to play the game effectively).

I also like the diversity of gameplay and enjoy the different modes, such as exploration, crafting, and combat.

SAGE is always evolving. The team constantly introduces new ships and features like guild battles to keep things fresh.

While I like how developed the economy is, this comes with a tradeoff of requiring a significant time commitment from players.

You have to stay up-to-date on even minor changes to SAGE, as these tweaks can affect your strategies and performance.

While many players automate gameplay via bots, most players don’t yet have these capabilities and thus face a higher barrier to entry when getting started.

Despite this, I’m still a big fan of SAGE and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Tarochi is an RPG developed by Paima Studios using the Paima Engine and deployed on XAI.

The game is comparable to Pokemon, as you capture monsters, battle, quest, and explore.

Monsters are represented by stateful NFTs, which are non-fungibles with metadata that updates based on player actions and can be sold on secondary marketplaces.

Tarochi is currently in the midst of Season 1, the game's first mainnet release.

This update introduced many new features, the most notable of which are PvP battles (combat was previously PvE) and Genesis Trainer NFTs (a collection that provides provides several in-game perks).

Season 1 is playable and set to run until the end of April, when Season 2 is slated for release.

Tarochi is one of the most addicting onchain games I’ve come across.

The core game loop of collecting monsters and battling in the arena is a lot of fun.

I’m particularly excited about the upcoming Guild event, where you’ll be able to compete and team up with other players, further enhancing the social aspect of the game.

(WASD is recruiting for this!)

I also like that you can play the game on mobile - It feels just as smooth as desktop and helps make the game more friendly for casual players.

Despite these positives, I feel there’s still room for improvement with Tarochi.

For instance, the game does not have much of a story or lore, and the soundtrack is repetitive and loud.

Addressing these should create a more engaging experience and help Tarochi score even more points in my book.

Pirate Nation is an RPG developed by Proof of Play.

In Pirate Nation, you take on the role of (surprise, surprise) a pirate, where you’ll explore, craft NFT items, battle on the seas, and earn Pirate Gold (PGLD).

Gameplay shares some similarities with Farmville (a game co-created by Proof of Play’s founder), as you’ll have a limited amount of energy per day to allocate to tasks like quests, crafting, exploration, and combat.

As I outlined in my piece last month, combat has recently been overhauled through the addition of PvP matches and a new battle system.

Under the hood, Pirate Nation is unique in that it’s a true “multichain game.”

This is because the game not only migrated its contracts to Apex, the first L3 built using Multichain, Proof of Play’s Arbitrum Orbit-based stack, but also uses mirroring to enable certain playable characters (Founder’s Pirate NFTs) to live on Ethereum L1.

I really enjoy Pirate Nation and feel it’s one of the most impressive onchain games out there.

The game’s quest system is well-designed and immersive, and crafting (and then flexing) items is very satisfying.

Combat has improved considerably on the back of the additions I mentioned above, while the game’s graphics are among the best in the space.

In addition, I’m a big fan of the Proof of Play team, which does a great job of communicating with the community and shipping new features.

All in all, I’m very excited to keep playing Pirate Nation and to see how Proof of Play grows out its ecosystem.

As you can see, between SAGE, Tarochi, and Pirate Nation, I’m having a ton of fun onchain gaming these days.

These titles are all impressive, fusing fun gameplay with cutting-edge infrastructure to create immersive experiences.

I’m incredibly excited to keep playing and covering them here for you all.

This week in onchain gaming was defined by new releases.

We had six games launch or ship a major new update, including Strategems, Soccerverse, PAVED, Force Prime Heroes, Mugencraft, and Sky Strife.

So far, I’ve had the chance to play the latter two and enjoyed them both.

As you all know, I’m a big Sky Strife fan.

Unsurprisingly, I’ve had a lot of fun with the new update, which brings back the two new units introduced at the end of Season 0.1, counters, and new features like plugins.

Plugins are extensions built on top of Sky Strife that can enhance gameplay or provide additional insights into a match.

For instance, there are plugins that let you automatically launch certain attacks, as well as see enemy gold totals.

Plugins are very cool and a demonstration of a unique selling point of onchain games: Composability.

In a similar vein, Mugencraft is a UGC recipe-making game developed by Baratie.

In it, you can combine different emojis to create recipes, mint them as NFTs, and earn points when other players use them.

The game is simple but enables a lot of creativity, with a lot of funny ones being cooked (pun intended) up.

I made one myself called “Roadkill 💀” which is a combination of the “Mountain Railway 🚞” and “Chicken 🐔” emojis.

(I suppose I have a dark sense of humor).

Between Sky Strife, Mugencraft and Primodium, I’m having a ton of fun onchain gaming these days.

Given the recent flurry of new launches, I’d expect the good times to keep rolling.

It’s been an exciting week for us onchain gamers.

Primodium v0.10 continued to grow, hitting over 1000 players.

CCP (The studio behind Eve Online) announced that they’ll be building their game )Project Awakening) using MUD.

MOCS launched on testnet, EIP-4844 went live, while Arbitrum and Starknet are preparing to deploy hundreds of millions to fund games in their ecosystems.

As you can see, the onchain gaming ecosystem is continuing to pick up steam.

Every news item below is important, but the most significant in my eyes is the release of Dencun and EIP-4844.

The upgrade reduces gas costs on L2s by an order of magnitude, meaning that our onchain gaming transactions just got a lot cheaper.

I can’t wait to save some money on gas, and see what new types of games this cheaper blockspace enables.

Gm onchain gamers!

WASD is back from a smol ETH Denver (And Primodium induced) break to keep exploring the onchain gaming ecosystem with you all!

In the past, we’ve taken a look at various L1s and L2s with growing onchain gaming communities like Optimism, Arbitrum, Base, Starknet, and Solana.

Today, we’re going to take a look at another one that launched just last week: Blast.

Blast is an Ethereum L2 developed by the same team behind Blur.

The network is unique in that it offers yield on ETH and stablecoins through rebases by depositing its underlying funds into Lido and RWA protocols.

This yield, combined with a highly effective points and airdrop campaign, has helped Blast attract more than $2.78 billion in TVL and a litany of developers.

(The implementation of these tactics also generated plenty of controversy, but that debate is beyond the scope of this piece.)

While many are building DeFi projects, the network is also beginning to foster an onchain gaming ecosystem.

This begs the question…

…Can Blast becoming a leading venue for onchain games?

Let’s take a look at the some of the actual titles building on the L2 to find out!

Doomsday is a survival game.

Set centuries in the future, in Doomsday, you’ll compete against others to establish stations across the Omega Galaxy and emerge as the last player standing.

Doomsday runs over rounds which have two phases:

1. The “Expansion,” where players pay ETH to mine (i.e., create) settlements represented by NFTs.

2. The “Wasting” where these stations are randomly eliminated until a final one remains.

The last player standing at the end of the Wasting phase will earn all the ETH spent on minting and upgrading settlements.

Doomsday has held 4 rounds since 2023, with the most recent, “Survival of the Blasts,” coinciding with the launch of the L2.

Overall, I think Doomsday is pretty cool.

I like having the opportunity to earn some ETH, and the mining process is a fun, interesting way to onboard players into the game.

I’m also a big fan of the lore, which is far more fleshed out and interesting than that of many other onchain titles.

With all that said, there is a high barrier to entry to playing Doomsday.

As of writing, a minimum of ~$100 was needed to get a settlement.

In addition, Doomsday is not a game you can play for hours upon hours, which may lessen its appeal for those who want an all-encompassing experience.

Cambria: Duel Arena is an MMORPG.

Part of the broader Cambria ecosystem, in Duel Arena players battle in 1v1, Runescape-esque duels.

These duels utilize a stake-to-play mechanism where you can wager ETH or other tokens, with the winner taking home these assets.

In addition, players can earn EP (Essence Points) for the upcoming Cambria airdrop by playing and staking ETH.

We covered Duel Arena in our guide to the Base ecosystem, but much has changed since it was announced that the game would be deployed on Blast.

For starters, the team shipped Excaliber, a new mechanism in which players can earn a jackpot from accumulated fee revenue based on the amount of ETH they stake.

There have also been several new gameplay updates, including:

• The ability to trade in-game items for ETH directly with other players

• Spectator bets where anyone can bet on a brawl

• Improved onboarded via an embedded wallet and Web2 platforms like Google and Discord

Whether on Blast or Base, Duel Arena is as fun as ever.

It’s a well-designed degen game that’s now deployed on a degen chain.

I’m a big fan of the new additions, the improved UX, and (of course) the opportunity to win some ETH.

War3 is an MMO wargame created by Boffee.

Currently in development, in War3 you’ll battle against other players for control over territory in an open world.

The game will utilize a token WAR3, though the exact way it will be implemented is still unclear.

However, we do know that the token (along with Blast incentives) will be distributed 100% to the community via airdrops.

(Including onchain gaming Guilds like WASD!)

Although we don’t have much information on the specifics of War3’s gameplay, I’m nonetheless eager to try it out when it launches (It’s set sometime later this month).

There are many other interesting Blast-based projects that I’ll be watching over the coming weeks.

These include:

• Defira

• Yolo Games

• Blast Runners

Blast’s onchain gaming is not as robust as Redstone, Base, or Starknet.

However, it still has a lot of potential.

The L2’s incentive mechanisms, such as native yield and airdrop campaigns, have worked, helping it garner significant liquidity and developer interest.

The chain is filled with interesting degen projects across sectors – And between Doomsday, Degen Arena, and War3, that’s certainly true of its games.

Yes, two of these titles have migrated from other networks, and War3 is not yet live.

However, should they and others be successful, I can see a world in which Blast carves out a niche as a venue for more heavily financialized onchain games.

It’s still very early days.

But I would not fade Blast.

Teams continue to build and push the space forward, shipping new gameplay and infrastructure updates at a breakneck speed.

One game that’s a prime example of this is Pirate Nation.

An RPG developed by Proof of Play, in Pirate Nation, you take the role of a (you guessed it) pirate to complete quests, compete in combat, craft NFTs items, earn Pirate Gold (PGLD), and more!

Ben first covered Pirate Nation in August 2023; since then, the game has hit numerous milestones.

This includes all-time highs in DAUs, a $33 million raise for Proof of Play, and numerous new gameplay and infrastructure releases for us gamers.

Today, I’ll look at some of these updates and give you a breakdown of what’s new with Pirate Nation.

Let’s get into it!

One of the biggest additions to Pirate Nation’s gameplay in recent months is PvP combat

Previously, combat in Pirate Nation was entirely PvE, as you’d fight against a CPU. However, players can now take their ships to sea and battle each other.

PvP includes several changes to gameplay, like a timer, compared to PvE.

This helps make battles faster and adds new dynamics to in-game strategy, as you no longer have as much time to plot your moves.

PvP is currently only accessible to holders of Founder’s Pirates NFTs, which cost ~0.45 ETH, and you have to enter a code to join a battle (which admittedly can be a bit annoying).

However, the game mode as a whole is a lot of fun, and I imagine it will soon become more streamlined and accessible to a wider range of players.

I’m also excited to see some of the new upcoming features like leaderboards, results validation, PGLD antes and rewards, and more.

A second recent change to combat is the addition of the “Hard” difficulty for Gauntlets.

For those new to Pirate Nation, Gauntlets are a series of five consecutive PvE battles that progressively get more difficult.

Now these combat encounters can be experienced at a higher difficulty, with Hard Gauntlets requiring an entry fee of 500 Pirate Gold (PGLD) and providing superior rewards relative to “Normal” ones.

I’ve found this new type of Gauntlet quite challenging – Which I think is good.

I’m a Level 20 and have yet to complete all five fights!

Along with changes to combat, Pirate Nation now has another new type of gameplay: Exploration.

In Exploration, you can use your ship to sail the seas, visit different islands, and gather resources (albeit at the cost of using your energy).

Players can activate “Exploration mode” by clicking on their docked ship on their island.

Like PvP, Founder’s Pirates owners also have exploration perks, as they get a 10% speed boost on their ships in the mode.

Pirate Nation is becoming more social through the launch of the Shipwright.

The Shipwright is a new settlement building where you can offer different services to other Pirate Nation players in exchange for a fee.

While its entire range of use cases has yet to be announced, you can now use the Shipwright to merge and upgrade ships.

I’m a big fan of the new building, as it boosts utility for ships while providing a new avenue for players to earn.

Gameplay is not the only thing getting a boost – Pirate Nation’s supporting infrastructure has also been upgraded with the release of the Marketplace.

As its name suggests, the Marketplace is a unified venue where players can trade in-game items without fees.

Notably, it supports crypto and fiat transactions, which should enable both onchain and Web2 gamers to buy and sell easily.

While not yet released, a final upcoming infrastructure release is the launch of Multichain.

Multichain is a “constellation” of L3s powered by Arbitrum Orbit and Pirate Nation’s onchain gaming engine.

Multichain L3s are optimized for hosting onchain games and other “internet-scale” applications with sub 250 MS tx speeds and dirt-cheap fees.

In the “coming days,” the Proof Of Play team will migrate Pirate Nation’s game contracts from Arbitrum Nova to Apex (the first multichain).

Notably, the game will still use mirroring to enable gameplay with Founder’s Pirates that live on Ethereum L1.

I’m hyped for the launch of Apex and to see what other games to choose to build using the Stack!

As you can see, Proof Of Play has been busy since we last looked at Pirate Nation, shipping numerous new gameplay updates and infrastructure updates.

These releases should help attract new players and attention while helping Pirate Nation cement itself as a leading onchain game.

I’m incredibly excited to see what comes of that growth – And where Pirate Nation and the broader Proof Of Play ecosystem go from here.
