How has technology shaped our lives?

And what might the future hold…

Everything has a starting point, a trigger to bring it into existence. Something we tend to forget when we get too comfortable with what we have, as behaviour becomes second nature, in our fast paced contemporary lifestyles.

A new era of the internet is emerging. It’s referred to as web3 and is being constructed on crypto rails offering new market design primitives, incentives, and ownership mechanisms that have the potential to spread value to a greater number of parts within the ecosystem. It also carries the potential to decentralise systems and distribute responsibility to different layers of the tech stack. There are still many unanswered questions and plenty of thinking still to be done.

Having said that, it is clear that there is a shift underway and the speed at which developments are occurring calls for an increase in the allocation of attention to understanding the emerging dynamics. As we seek to make sense of the technological influence this shift will have on culture, society, business, ownership, and communication we will bring together thinking from different reference points. Creating shared landscapes that combine visual and written media.

To begin our journey we have three questions to set the scene.

ethereum://0xabEFBc9fD2F806065b4f3C237d4b59D9A97Bcac7/31064

Questions:

What influence has technology had on our lives over the last 10 years?

What technology have you used the most over the last 2 years?

What influence will technology have on the next 10 years of our lives?

We value feedback and would welcome any that you have to share. The space we are creating with web34u seeks to help us navigate what the future may hold and how web3 might shape our future paths.

We’re here to be your sherpas, guiding you through this transition and exploring the potential of what this new technological paradigm might mean for your business. Harness the evolution of the internet and the next phase of technology advancement that will create new types of value.

On a side note - you will notice that we have opted to use the term web3 broadly in this piece and have not provided a clear definition for it, or explored the relationship between web3, crypto, the blockchain, and the metaverse. A deeper exploration of this landscape will evolve as we progress on our journey with you.

Until next time!

Josh & Dennis (WEB34U)

The great thing about zooming out to catch a glimpse of the Long Now, is that your get to see the changes that happen over time.

The Internet Era started way back in the 1970’s using new protocol agreements never before written to send messages between MAINFRAME computers around the globe. The idea behind it was to use technology to share and grow knowledge. An activity that revolutionised the Telecommunication Industry. The human interactive effect of the implementation of these protocols was that with an acceleration of computing possibility the academic world (and the cold war defence departments) could start to figure out how to make more complex calculations…faster. Many opportunities arose in lots of different fields…all working to speed up global development and CONNECTION.

Once the Personal computer became affordable, ushered in by the epic battle between at the time start-up companies Microsoft Systems and Apple computers, the biggest leap in human interactive acceleration came with the introduction of the open internet. The world wide Web gave the general public access to a new space that started to develop in the 90’s . Websites and E-mail started to become commonplace in (again) academic environments and quickly spread to every household in the developed worlds. The shift in thinking and doing became apart by the explosion of web presence ranging from individuals to organisations. We we’re all online! Messaging, Chatting, Reading each others e-mails and getting used to a global closeness.

And then the Mobile phone happened … Always reachable for those who could afford it. At first a bit cluncky and chuncky with big batteries and wires but after a while all phones started to shrink and the displays became more than just visible pixels. The apotheosis of this development (at the time lead by Nokia and Blackberry), was with the Steve Jobs’s epic reveal of the Iphone. The already amazing music storage machines became what they were supposed to be…SMART PHONES. The Shift to mobile created an whole new platform based on the development of unique small Applications…or APPS for short. The online App & Play-stores became the new space that put the promise of change and personal advancement right in your pocket. Rows of people would cue up to get their hands on these wonders of the modern age. And after some basic years of learning what we could do with these platforms and apps we started to notice that we needed more convenience and security of our growing database of Photos and Videos. The Cloud was born giving every subscriber the chance to store their most important files and deepest darkest secrets in an magical space we seem to trust… maybe the biggest leap of faith people made was to just give all their data to big companies to store and safeguard their memories and online identity.

Now… in a time of high speed internet, global reach, social media on steroids and a global urgency to sustain our CURRENT way of life, we get to a new promise. A 4K 3D hyper-personal experience that will define our next web of opportunity…

What will the Future of the INTERNET bring YOU?

The world that we live in since humans first made planet earth our home and change definitely is the really the only constant. The forced change the world experienced over the last two years has asked society to engage their intuition. It has also given us time to consider the paths that we should walk into the future with.

the path connecting intuition and imagination

This brings us to the why behind this experiment of curiosity that we are engaging in. Our ambition is to share our learning and thinking in an open sourced way.

Creative expression is a tool that we both use to help us explore the shifts that occur in the world around us at various scales. Seeking to bring the abstract into relatable and relational spaces, that can be interacted with and contributed to. The trigger for creating this specific space started through our journey to explore a new paradigm of technology. Asking questions of what it might mean for society, digital rights, business, and many other areas that we will unpack as we go.

As the experiment evolves it will encourage those who engage with it to contribute to enriching it with their own thinking and experiences. The ability to raise different points for consideration and interpretation. We are engaging our curiosity to help us make sense of the transition that is underway, looking back in history for reference points and seeking to learn more about people, projects, and ideas that are building the future.

What do we hope to create through the process of engaging our curiosity? We have an idea of what we think we may create, but this too may change and so for the moment it is probably best that this question remain open ended and unanswered. We are seeking to explore a world of possibility and grapple with questions of what this transition may mean for the way we interact, build, and relate as humans.

Cynics won’t build the future, we need to encourage ourselves to embrace imagination and to give more than we take, what may it mean to live in a positive sum world? Small actions compound. Doing things the way they are currently being done and using systems that were created to solve challenges in a world before our time is not smart and we are bound to create a greater number of problems than the number we can solve.

We need to rethink and excite our creative curiosity to help us explore possibilities to do things differently.

Let’s embrace change, practice resilience, show character, allow ourselves to explore our intuition and nurture integrity.
