1. Write3 Tip - If You Want to Be Collected, Become A Collector

A question I receive frequently is this: "How can I increase the reach of my writing collectibles & sell more copies?" My answer is always the same: Start collecting! This approach serves a dual purpose for you as a writer:

Firstly, stepping into the shoes of a collector allows you to understand what motivates a collector. What captures your attention? What compels you to mint? Once you uncover these truths for yourself, you unlock insights to inform your own creations.

Secondly, this strategy allows you to deepen your connections within the Write3 community. Our core strength is mutual support. So, what better way to bolster this than by collecting work yourself? Here are three quick collecting tips to get you started:

1. Don't let your budget hold you back. Numerous creators offer their work at modest prices, and some even for free. Check out Objkt.com for plenty of high quality literary NFTs at affordable prices.

2. Want to know where to find the lates Write3 creations, quickly and easily? Keep yourself updated with this curated Write3 Creators Twitter list (currently 70+ strong).

3. Embrace diversity. Incredible digital writing pieces are available across a range of chains. Here's my challenge to you: Mint on a new chain this week. (And remember, I'm always here to lend a hand, just drop me an email!)

2. Write3 News - Paragraph Introduces Anonymous Messaging

Anonymity is at the heart of web3 and crypto. For many in the web3 space, preserving our identities from corporations and government is of paramount importance. Crypto wallets promise an interface with commerce without disclosing our identity. But, what about communication? Can one remain anonymous while receiving desired information?

Until recently, achieving this was quite a challenge. This week, however, Paragraph has collaborated with XMTP to unveil secure messaging for crypto wallets. In an exciting first for the Write3 newsletter, today's edition will be dispatched to a list of wallets, in addition to email addresses.

I'm thrilled by this innovation! Here's a big round of applause to Colin Arms and the entire Paragraph team for this remarkable upgrade.

3. A Literary NFT Worth Collecting - The 7 Love Stories

1. Reward Buyers - Offering collectors something more than just the book enhances their experience. Consider extras like exclusive access or airdrops. For instance, Book.io rewards Gutenberg Bible holders with early access to their upcoming $BOOK token and discounts on all book offerings.

2. Character NFTs - Enrich your story by creating NFTs of your characters. Starboy took this route for his book, Drifter, creating a 500 NFT collection of characters. Let users read your book and own a piece of the lore.

3. Collaborate with Web3 Artists - Web3 encourages collaboration. Why not team up with your favorite artists and allow them to create unique cover art for your novel? A perfect example is MS Bourland's Death Eater, which features five unique 1/1 pieces of cover art.

4. Create a Gated Writer's Room - B. Earl, the author behind several Marvel comics, uses this approach to strengthen his connection with fans. Owners of "Riglan" have access to his private community where he asks for input and offers collaborative rewriting opportunities.

5. Use Cover Art Rarity - Enhance the collectability of your novel by introducing cover art rarity. This is a strategy perfected by Book.io across all of their of titles. It's not uncommon for Bookio to have hundreds of different covers for their books.

6. New Editions = New Mint - Bring back the allure of new editions. Following the sell-out of your first edition, you can offer a second one. A prime example is Ana Maria Caballero's Tryst. The first edition sold out in a very short time. Several months later, Ana came back with a new, enhanced edition for her community.

7. Burn The Books - Book burning, in this case, has a positive connotation. It increases the collectability of your novel and keeps your community engaged. Offer your community something in return for burning, this introduces game theory and reduces the editions available of your original work. The Jenkins team successfully applied this strategy to Bored & Dangerous, reducing the supply by 8,800 as owners chose to burn the book for gaining access to the Azurbala world. *Tip: Only one week left to burn your B&D books!

1. Write3 Tip - Explore Low Cost Chains

Last week, we held our inaugural auction for a 1/1 copy of the Write3 Newsletter. Congratulations to PlantsNFT on the winning bid! This experience, however, underscored the crazy high gas fees associated with minting and auctioning on Ethereum.

The costs to mint and accept the auction exceeded the revenue generated from the mint itself. In contrast, I minted and airdropped 170 "First 500" NFTs on the Polygon chain for less than $10. 🤯

To ensure the blockchain remains a successful space for creators, we must strive for cost-effective and efficient creation. High costs for auctions, mints, and airdrops can dampen the excitement and deter creators. Which is a bummer.

My suggestion is to explore Layer 2 solutions like Optimism and Polygon, which enable cost-effective operations while maintaining the interoperability with Ethereum. Tezos and Solana are also viable alternatives, although Solana currently lacks a platform for writing NFTs.

For collectors, educate yourself about Layer 2 solutions, bridge some ETH, and seek out compelling creators and projects to support. For creators, familiarize yourself with Layer 2 options and utilize platforms that offer multi-chain minting options, like Manifold, which now supports Optimism.

I recently discovered an innovative Write3 project, Open Book. Conceived by Kenny Schachter, Open Book offers a platform for prominent web3 writers and creators. The unique collection model allows you to create your own CoreBook with featured writers of your choice. It also offers a chance for grassroot creators like ourselves to contribute. Last week, Elon and Twitter stirred up controversy by announcing limits on the number of views allowed for tweets. This incident serves as a stark reminder that social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, are controlled by the few. Billionaires like Musk and Zuckerberg have the power to censor our creative expression. And that's scary.

Instead of migrating to Zuckerberg's new platform, Threads, I urge you to consider decentralized alternatives that prioritize one thing: Freedom To Create. Here are three platforms worth checking out:

• Farcaster: One of my personal favorites. Its very easy to use and the vibe over there is immaculate. If you're interested in joining, reply to this email with your email address, and I'll send you an invite.

• Lens: Lens protocol is an exciting option that seamlessly integrates crypto wallets into your social media experience, enabling easy minting and collecting from your timeline. The only issue is finding invites. But, if you're there, let's connect.

1. Write3 Tip - Consistency is Key

Here's a little secret about content creation: People aren't paying as much attention to your work as you might think. Even your biggest fans have busy lives and need reminders. So, it's crucial to show up consistently in the same place at the same time to provide your audience with an anchor.

For creators in Write3, this can be challenging with the constant influx of new platforms and innovations. It's tempting to chase the shiny new object every few weeks. However, here's my approach:

I commit to showing up every Thursday right here in the Write3 newsletter and every morning in The Write3 Discord. Additionally, I tweet every day. These are my dedicated spaces. I then challenge myself to try one new thing each month. For example, this month, I published for the first time on FxText.

Now, I challenge you: Where are you consistently creating? Where can I reliably find your work? Do you have a website or a Linktree that curates your content? Give your audience a clear pattern of your creative output.

2. Write3 News - Another Big Week For Write3

3. A Literary NFT Worth Collecting - Survive All Apocalypses - Deep Dive

I'm a huge fan of Neil Strauss' Survive All Apocalypses, which I consider one of the most important writing NFTs ever created. This fall 2021 book, written by a NYT Best Selling writer, was ahead of its time. Recently, through the LIT Discord, I discovered some fascinating facts about SAA. Here's what I learned:

👉🏻 Airdropped - The original book was airdropped to early members of the LIT community, not sold outright, making the secondary sales of 555 ETH truly mind-blowing!
👉🏻 Donated To The LACMA - Cozomo de' Medici generously donated a copy of SAA (along with 21 other on-chain art pieces) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in February.
👉🏻 Utility Not Known - SAA had utility, with one owner randomly chosen to receive the copyrights to the book for a potential movie adaptation. The current status of the project remains unknown. Check out Neil's thread about the process.

1. Writer's Tip - Write Like Stephen King

Here's my tip for the week: Read Stephen King's "On Writing". If you've already read it, read it again. There's so many nuggets of wisdom in the book, I might re-title this part of the newsletter "1 Tip For Writer's From Stephen King". Today, I'll share this quote:

"I used to tell interviewers that I wrote everyday except for Christmas, the Fourth of July and my birthday. That was a lie...The truth is when I'm writing, I write everyday...that includes Christmas, the Fourth and my birthday..." - Stephen King, On Writing

I won't scare you with the amount of words King writes in a day, you'll have to read the book to feel that sense of intimidation for yourself. But the sentiment rings clear: If you're a writer, you gotta write. No exceptions. I don't make the rules, I just share them with you.

Recently, I was on a Twitter space where a speaker described companies building with both web2 & web3 technology as "Mullet Projects". Web2 in the front, Web3 in the back. That's so funny the host created a meme project 2 days later.

This week's Write3 Show guest, Meet Nippy, might be the greatest Write3 example of a Mullet Project in existence. They're combining children's books (web2) and offering IP ownership and income via crypto (Web3). I highly recommend checking out the project, if for no other reason, to understand the power of the blockchain in rewarding your readers.

I am in the middle of writing a book, and I’m hesitant to do it through blockchain. I feel like I would miss out on catering to the normies, taking advantage of how easy Amazon direct publishing is, and the touch/feel of a physical book. How would you address these concerns, and is there a better way to think of it all? - Paul T

I get this question often, and I understand your concerns. It's true that Amazon offers a much wider reach and adoption than most web3 writing publishers. The NFT book collecting audience is still relatively small compared to Amazon's user base. However, you can consider offering your book on both Amazon and in the web3 space. For example, Allen Taylor's Web3 Socials is available on Amazon and as an NFT book through Readl. This way, you can cater to both audiences and explore the best of both worlds.

Where & how does someone read NFT books? - John F

The reading experience for NFT books depends on the publishing source. Platforms like Book.io and Bookvolts have e-reader apps available through Apple's app store. Additionally, many self-publishing writers offer their novels in EPUB format. Once you buy an NFT, you'll be given access to a downloadable file that can be read through a Kindle reader.

When writing as a writer, undeniably you will be versatile and able to write different genres. Maybe different themes. But in web3 writing, do you feel compelled to adopt a certain theme, or a series approach? Do you feel you have to constrain your style and build it up? - Kevin K

The answer depends on your goal as a writer. If you aim to sell as many copies or editions as possible, focusing on crypto/web3 themes may be your best bet, as they resonate with the dedicated audience in the current market. However, that doesn't mean you have to limit yourself. Feel free to write about anything and everything you want. Just keep in mind that finding a web3 audience for genres like children's books, travel blogs, or romance novels might be more challenging.

What are some great NFT books? - Wasabi

That's a fantastic question! There are hundreds of NFT books out there, and platforms like Readl, Cryptoversal Books, and Book.io have published dozens of public domain titles. (Yes, you can read Moby Dick as an NFT!) Here are a few examples of original IP NFT books that are first editions. I consider these true NFT Books.

How do you think web3/NFTs will change writing and reading for the masses? - Mark F

This is the million-dollar question! In the long term, on-chain writing will become incredibly important. Provenance, verifiability, and digital flexes will continue to play a crucial role, especially with the rise of AI and digital ecosystems. Additionally, the metaverse has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with stories and content. However, the biggest change will be the desire of the masses to own all digital goods. Once people experience digital ownership, it will feel strange to go back. As this shift occurs, all forms of content, including videos, books, and podcasts, will be valued not only for their content but also for the ability to own them. This is why Write3 is so important - it allows you to own your content and your work!

1. Write3 Tip - A Winning Formula For Selling Writing NFTs

Thanks to your incredible support, my latest writing NFT, "The Patron Saint Of NFTs - 4 Reasons Generative Art and NFTs are a Match Made in Heaven," sold out within 4 hours of being published! Reflecting on this success, I've fine-tuned a process that's yielding positive results, which I'd love to share with you:

Web3/Crypto Content - I've found the most success creating content that resonates with crypto wallet holders. While non-crypto subjects have seen some traction, the key seems to be matching the content with the interests of those in the web3 space.

Marketing Posters - To increase visibility and awareness, I've been offering posters linked to my writing NFTs as free NFTs. These posters, especially when released as open editions or shared ahead of the final release, have been instrumental in my marketing strategy.

Small Editions - Low Cost - One Platform - In my experience, collectors appreciate affordable pieces and the exclusivity of a smaller edition. The sense of being "1 of 10" rather than "1 of 100" holds a certain allure. Further, I don't offer my writing NFTs on multiple platforms. I believe that cheapens the value for collectors.

Quality Over Quantity - Despite writing every day and tweeting regularly, I reserve my best work for NFTs and limit these to one major writing NFT per month. My philosophy? Preserve the quality of your output and respect your collectors' capacity.

Utility - My final step is incorporating some form of utility or incentive. For instance, one lucky collector of my latest FxText article will win a Gen XYZ Das Occult.

Mix these ingredients in your next writing NFT and you will find success. I guarantee it :)

1. Write3 Tip - Mastering Midjourney

I've been knee-deep in the world of visuals, crafting posters to amplify my writing. The verdict? A resounding success. Engaging readers with visuals isn't a new tactic, but boy, does it work wonders! Since the inception of my marketing posters, I've seen a surge in sales and impressions. Let me share three tools I use to breathe life into my art:

1. Midjourney - Getting the hang of it can be a tad tricky, but practice makes perfect. If you're comfortable with Discord, then Midjourney will be a breeze. Although there's a free plan, I find the first tier subscription quite valuable. Here are a few resources that helped me understand Midjourney:
   • Midjourney Beginner's Tutorial - My go-to for the basics. This will get you up and running in no time.
   • Additive Prompts - Nick is a great follow on Twitter and this thread taught me most of what I needed to know about how to prompt.
   • In addition to Midjourney, several members of the Write3 community have had success with Starryai & NightCafe.

2. Canva - After I create my art, I use Canva to design the posters. Packed with handy tools and templates, Canva (free or premium) will help you elevate your art.

3. Removebg - Need to overlay an image without the background? This is your (free) go to tool. (Notice the blue ribbon below)

Last week, Zora, the NFT creation platform, launched a writing NFT called "Pure Internet". 1. Write3 Tip - Why Collectors Will Buy Your Writing NFT

This week, I published my latest writing NFT titled, "Why Should I Buy Your Writing NFT When I Can Read It For Free". I described 4 reasons why collectors will purchase your work:

1. Patronage - One of the primary reasons a reader will collect your work is to say "Thank You" with their wallet. NFTs and patronage go together like peanut butter and jelly.

2. Profit - Degens are gonna degen. People want an opportunity to experience a financial upside to your creative career. By collecting now, they might cash in later.

3. Social Signalling - Readers want to timestamp their fandom. Readers crave more than social media likes or bookmarking a great Twitter thread; they desire ownership, they want to participate in a community, a culture and a lifestyle.

4. Utility - If you provide utility to your readers, they will collect your work. The number one reason a person collects any NFT is utility.

3. A Literary NFT Worth Collecting - CornyTopia - Sir Lord T. W. Wright I

Book.io, known for publishing public domain tiles on Cardano, has a new offering worth checking out. From the website:

2. Write3 News - Folklore Releases Season 2

Folklore, a community that focuses on exploring long-form articles related to belonging, lorecraft, and human relationships, is about to release its second season. The community was founded by Rafathebuilder, a notable figure in digital communities and writing NFTs. I personally check his Telegram daily and highly recommend getting involved with Folklore.

3. A Literary NFT Worth Collecting - Landing Your Dream Steve Jobs - Mark Fielding

One of my favorite Write3 creators is Mark Fielding. He has a unique ability to be both funny and imaginative while being empathetic in his writing. His work always keeps me entertained and intellectually engaged. "Landing Your Dream Steve Jobs," is a farcical and hilarious short story that I highly recommend collecting!
