The XMTP Team

1. WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT QUANTUM COMPUTERS TODAY

Quantum computers are an existential threat to much of today’s cryptography. Everything from TLS to Bitcoin to secure messaging protocols like XMTP run under the assumption that the Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem is computationally intractable. Deriving a private key from a strong public key on a conventional computer would take longer than the life of the universe, so we can all feel safe using them for encryption.

Since the ‘90s, we’ve known that quantum computers have the potential to exponentially speed up this process: with enough qubits, the same problems could be solved in hours. The algorithms required to do this are decades old - we are just waiting for a quantum computer powerful enough to use them effectively. Breaking a 256-bit elliptic curve private key could take as little as a few thousand “logical qubits.” Nothing like that exists today, and we don’t know when scientists will make the required breakthroughs to get there, but we’ve seen signs that it’s time to get serious about the threat. In the past few years, Google has announced their Willow quantum processor, IBM announced Heron, and Microsoft has shown off Marjorana. If these breakthroughs continue, a working quantum computer with thousands of logical qubits may become a reality in the next 10 years.

Fortunately, there are things that we can do today to protect our users against future quantum breakthroughs.

2. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE ATTACKERS

Not all threats from quantum computers have equal urgency. Zooko published an excellent thread last year on how ZCash is thinking about quantum risks, and many of the same principles apply to XMTP. We need to think about the risks from active and passive attackers very differently.

• Passive Attacker. Someone silently listening to messages on the XMTP network and using a quantum computer to decrypt the contents. The threat from a passive attacker is removing the confidentiality from otherwise private communications.

• Active Attacker. Someone capable of using a quantum computer to assist in writing or modifying messages on the XMTP network. Active attackers may be able to impersonate users on the network, read confidential messages, and modify the parameters of group chats.

The threats from active attackers are serious, but we have much more time to deal with them. Note that the active attacker needs a working quantum-computer at the time of their attack. So long as the network has rolled out protections against the threat before a sufficiently powerful quantum computer is online, everyone is safe. Whether we beat that quantum computer by a week, a year, or a decade doesn’t matter.

This is not the case for passive attackers. We know well-funded actors are already archiving interesting ciphertext today, waiting for the technology to advance to the point that they can decrypt it. This is typically referred to as “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) and we should address it as soon as possible.

3. STATE-OF-THE-ART QUANTUM DEFENSES

While Quantum computers capable of breaking cryptography are still theoretical, the cryptography community has designed protocols that are resistant against quantum computers (even with thousands of logical qubits). NIST has been working for the last 8 years to standardize a suite of algorithms that protect against both quantum and conventional threats.

In the last year, both Signal and Apple have released updates to their messaging protocol to protect against passive attackers using these algorithms. Both implementations take a hybrid approach - which combines conventional and post-quantum encryption - so as not to “put all your eggs in one basket” with relatively new cryptography. Cryptographic algorithms become trustworthy by being used for decades without anyone finding a shortcut or back door to break them.

Our partners at Cryspen have been working on a post-quantum version of OpenMLS, and have implemented hybrid ciphersuites that can be dropped in to replace all conventional cryptography with post-quantum algorithms.

One challenge with going “all in” on post-quantum ciphersuites is the size of the keys and payloads. In a decentralized network like XMTP, every extra byte increases the cost to Payers on the network. Some payloads may grow by 5-10X with a hybrid approach.

Ideally, XMTP would get to post-quantum protection without needing to bloat payload sizes across the network.

Apple included this very helpful rubric for levels of quantum protection. To protect against passive attackers today, we need to get XMTP from Level 1 to Level 2. Implementing the full OpenMLS ciphersuite would put us somewhere between Level 3 and the “Future” state. Protecting against active attackers requires us to make our way into the “Future” column, which would include post-quantum signatures.

4. EFFICIENTLY PROTECTING AGAINST PASSIVE ATTACKERS

Thanks to the design of MLS, we don’t need to replace our traditional cryptography everywhere to keep messages safe from passive attackers.

Quantum computers do not give the same advantages to decrypting symmetrically encrypted payloads as they do to asymmetric encryption.

With a quantum computer, private keys using traditional algorithms can be derived from public keys by taking advantage of Shor's Algorithm, but the best attack against symmetric keys in 30+ years of research is Grover's Algorithm. Shor's algorithm provides an exponential speed-up, whereas Grover's provides a quadratic speed-up (or less).

That makes Shor's algorithm devastating to 256-bit public keys, while XMTP’s symmetric encryption keys remain safe against Grover's algorithm. This difference greatly limits the scope of what is required to get XMTP post-quantum protection against passive attackers.

If you look at all the payloads on the XMTP network, the only place we share group secrets through public key cryptography is in MLS Key Packages. We use those Key Packages to encrypt Welcome messages, which are used to add members to a group.

If a quantum computer can decrypt a Welcome, they have access to the full set of leaf nodes for conversation participants. They can then decrypt all messages in the current epoch and evade post-compromise security by breaking other participants' public keys as the epochs move forward.

But if the quantum computer cannot decrypt Welcomes, the rest of the payloads on the XMTP network are useless to a passive attacker. They don't have access to the leaf node public keys to break. That means they can’t read any of your messages.

XMTP already adds an extra encryption layer for Welcome messages above and beyond what is specified by MLS in order to protect some metadata we consider sensitive in our threat model. If we were to replace that extra encryption step with quantum-resistant HPKE encryption, we could protect Welcomes without impacting any other payloads on the network.

The steps required to do this are outlined here, and we expect to roll this change out in the coming weeks. The change will be non-breaking: clients who have post-quantum keys in their key packages will have their Welcome messages protected by post-quantum encryption, and older clients will not. Once all clients have upgraded to an SDK version that supports post-quantum protection, we can remove the legacy key package encryption altogether.

We expect this change to add 1.5KB to each Key Package and to increase the size of each encrypted Welcome message by approximately 50%. The highest volume payload types on the XMTP network (application messages and commits) would be unaffected by the change.

We brought in Cryspen to help model some of the security properties of this new architecture, and the informal analysis confirms that the new version of XMTP offers HNDL Forward Secrecy.

5. PROTECTING AGAINST ACTIVE ATTACKERS

As we’ve outlined above, XMTP has a bit more time to protect ourselves against active attackers. We only need to be ready before quantum computers enter the chat. We expect that with time, we will see improvements in the payload sizes for hybrid encryption schemes, and researchers may develop algorithms that offer even stronger protection.

To protect against an active attacker with a quantum computer, we would need to replace the ciphersuites used everywhere with a post-quantum alternative.

This would impact:

• Key Packages

• The inner payload in an XMTP double-encrypted Welcome

• Leaf nodes in the MLS tree, and the epoch secret from the root of the tree

• All MLS commits and proposals

• Signatures used for authentication of Key Packages and PrivateMessages

To prepare for a fully quantum-resistant version of MLS, we would like to allow developers to explore and play with these features in test environments. In 2026, we will begin allowing developers to enable post-quantum clients and to create groups that enforce post-quantum encryption. We can continue to iterate and learn from these experiments before we need to make post-quantum encryption the default in the network.

We expect that, over time, the data storage costs in the network will decrease and make the costs of the hybrid payloads less prohibitive for senders. There’s no reward for being 10 years early here, so we might as well wait for the best possible algorithms.

6. OUR FOUNDATION & COMMITMENT TO PRIVACY

XMTP was built on the belief that private communication must not depend on trust in any single party, including us. We encrypt everything and distribute it across a geographically and organizationally diverse network of nodes—meaning:

• No single point of compromise. XMTP encrypts everything and distributes it across a geographically and organizationally diverse group of nodes. No individual or entity has unilateral power to undermine privacy.

• No illusion that encryption alone is enough. Even perfect encryption fails if other risks—centralized storage, subpoenas, identity leaks—aren’t addressed. XMTP removes those vectors entirely, forcing the ecosystem to advance real, end-to-end privacy through cryptography.

• No need to trust the network operator. XMTP’s design ensures that privacy is guaranteed by protocol, not by promises.

We believe this architecture aligns with the highest privacy standards demanded by the most privacy-conscious organizations and individuals.

We have rigorously designed XMTP to obfuscate and minimize metadata:

• No message content or sender-recipient pairs are exposed: All content and conversations are fully encrypted.

• Decentralized nodes: Data is distributed across multiple independent nodes, eliminating centralized surveillance risks.

• Public discipline: Encryption of all public data is mandatory—XMTP’s open system enforces this discipline transparently.

While many messaging protocols claim strong encryption by securing message contents, protecting all conversation metadata requires many more layers of obfuscation and encryption that very few protocols can offer.

7. PRIVACY THROUGH TRANSPARENCY

As with everything in XMTP, this change will be released in the open. XMTP client code, servers, and data are available to the public. You can read a more detailed security analysis of the feature here.

We fundamentally believe that the most private network is the one where nothing is hidden.

This openness allows security researchers and the developer community to test every part of the project and prove our privacy model is sound with each release.

Every other major messaging platform keeps its data locked up on private servers. That means the first time their cryptography will be truly tested is when those servers get hacked. It means when they get subpoenaed, they can’t—or won’t—tell you what they handed over, and you have no way to verify what was collected in the first place.

You shouldn’t trust them, and you shouldn’t trust us. Trust the math.

• Turkey and Russia banned Discord in October 2024 for refusing to hand over user messages, cutting off millions and silencing political organizing (Reuters, 2024).

Governance Framework

Messages are delivered in milliseconds via an offchain broadcast network and consensus on critical state is maintained using Arbitrum Orbit on @base. 

XMTP uses USDC as the currency for the entire network. Ultra-low fees paid by apps in USDC are automatically distributed to node operators, creating a stable and reliable economic foundation across all participants.

As one of its first actions as the owner of Converse, Ephemera open sourced the application layer code. In the announcement, Ephemera CEO Shane Mac stated:

This isn’t a move about acquiring Converse; it’s about building trust with the best developers in the world and aligning XMTP with the values of the entire crypto community.

The move makes the application layer as open as the protocol layer. The truth is that developers don’t just build on protocols; they build on apps, too.

We’ve also made significant improvements to our security model, upgrading to MLS (Messaging Layer Security), the IETF standard for encryption, and have added several new security features including:

We’re excited to share some initiatives we’ve been working on that should add real value to what’s already happening in the space.

1/ Supporting Frames in XMTP

We see Farcaster’s launch of Frames this week as a big leap forward in the UX of web3. In reducing the friction for real interaction/transactions, they’ve created a primitive that lets creators and developers reach and engage with users where they are in social.

So we built a small taskforce at XMTP with one question: How can we help support and expand Frames as a primitive across web3? The answer is simple: add support for Frames in XMTP and create more reach for builders.

We publicly launched this exploration yesterday with a series of casts on Warpcast that hope to educate and inspire developers on how XMTP can extend support to Frames.

For example: picture minting on Farcaster, and tipping in private DMs.

Or bringing frames into DMs to easily buy merch.

In the coming days/weeks, we’ll continue to share ideas and would love your help in joining the conversation.

2/ Fighting Spam and Building Better Inboxes

Check out Airstack's documentation on how to leverage XMTP’s consent data to build better, safer inboxes, with greater protection against spam, and a main inbox protected by consent.

XMTP released a major protocol update that introduces consent protection at the protocol level. All major inboxes are currently adopting this standard to filter out spam, while working with Airstack to innovate on the best user experiences.

Consent preferences are stored privately in an encrypted consent list on the XMTP network. This list is controlled by the user, and only accessible by apps the user logs into.

By gaining access to this list, apps can then verify if a user has allowed or denied to receive messages from another address, and protect these preferences in their app.

This presents a fundamental shift in the way we communicate, one that is better for users, developers and businesses.

• 🤝 For users, it not only provides a much better user experience, — a user only has to block a sender once for it to be applied across all apps they use — but it also ensures that users maintain complete control over how their data is handled, with no intermediaries intercepting messages.

• 🌱 For apps, consent becomes a public good that developers can leverage and innovate on top of. Apps no longer have to trust other apps, they can trust the state of the network.

• 💌 As more apps plug in, a consent network is created which benefits businesses and brands as well, since their content is no longer buried amidst spam and can reach users who have truly opted in to receive it.

Treboryatska.eth has shared a proposal on Discourse for a decentralized network that tackles spam, ensures user sovereignty, and enhances security with a scalable blockchain infrastructure. Here's an excerpt:

Objective: Propose a credibly neutral network architecture that provides for a high throughput, low fee messaging experience for XMTP inbox client developers.

Motivation: XMTP is a credibly neutral messaging protocol that developers can use to provide secure, private, and portable messaging experiences for users. Messaging users should have sovereignty over their messaging identity and history. They also expect a private, secure messaging experience. Consumer messaging users expect a free and low friction experience. Bulk senders would like to build reputation while reliably reaching their audiences. All users would like protections from spam. The requirements of such a system are novel, and require unique solutions made available through a scalable modular blockchain infrastructure.

Feedback from the XMTP community, especially client app developers, is requested and welcomed!

1. Wen group chat?

Group chat is by far the most requested feature on XMTP. Almost every day, someone in the community asks, “Wen group chat?” So far, XMTP’s 1:1 chat has been the primary focus; ensuring that it has the reliability, performance, and usability to enable everyone from hackathon devs to public companies like Coinbase to add wallet-to-wallet messaging to their apps. But it’s finally time to tackle groups while improving the security and user privacy of the network.

2. When building apps using XMTP, how do you fetch conversations by the most recent message?"

Devs are often surprised to learn that this isn’t possible with XMTP. Instead, an app must fetch all conversations up front. Here's why.

Trustless systems don’t remove the need for us to communicate with each other. If anything, removing trusted third parties makes it that much more crucial for us to have secure ways to communicate, while being able to verify who we’re talking to.

The transparency, security and permissionlessness of blockchain has been missing from our communication in web3. This leads to a lack of critical engagement, which is especially felt when we try to organize ourselves as a group and make decisions democratically. For example, on average only 20% of people vote in Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO).

DAOs are about decentralizing ownership of a platform, and giving members (usually established through on-chain ownership) a say in decisions about its future. But to reach users, DAOs have to make use of web2 messaging platforms, which is truly problematic for preserving anonymity and privacy in voting. To reach is to dox.

With XMTP, Snapshot is making it dead simple for DAOs to notify members without collecting personal information, and allow them to vote without leaving the app.

Updates on Spam Countermeasures

Last week we kicked off the inaugural XMTP Inbox Safety Council meeting on spam countermeasures, with Coinbase Wallet, Converse Messenger, Unstoppable Domains, and Orb. Others have reached out to join the next ones. Here are some updates since we met:

• All apps asked that XMTP make it so that we can share users’ responses to conversation requests across client. This protects the entire network, not just a single inbox. We'd love your feedback on this short term solution.

• Use Airstack to build a known sender inbox and spam filters for your app.

• Converse allows users to delete conversations.

• Upgrade to Eth.co v2.8 for new anti-spam features in messages.

• On Unstoppable Domains, users can block unwanted message requests, which will affect sender's wallet spam score.

ETH NYC was the POC: Web3 identity + messaging + bots to guarantee delivery = powerful user onboarding at scale.

Over 60% of devs ordered from the crypto corner store, and mainly for digital goods like testnet funds, POAPs, and Lens handles.

Projects like Polygon, BASE, Linea, and Lens all used the same model to onboard and engage users at the event... and we're working with more partners for DevConnect, and can't wait to get even more creative with it!

Some of you might remember the Base cafe we hosted with Coinbase Wallet in July at ETH Paris. Anyone could place their order by texting an ENS we had set up, and pay for it in-chat using USDC. All gas-free on BASE.

Secure wallet messaging unlocks real utility, that can sometimes feel like magic because of the current systems we’re used to. For example:

• Avoiding credit card fees when paying for $1 coffee in a foreign country

• Having secure enough messaging that orders can be automated and paid for in-chat, without you having to enter any payment information (you’re already messaging from your wallet address).

We’re bringing that feeling back this September, and taking it to the next level — by partnering with ENS to bring to life even more use cases for secure and private messaging.

• Use local first architecture: If you're building a production-grade app, be sure to use a local-first architecture to help you build a performant app. Using this local-first architecture, the client prioritizes using the local cache on the device where it’s running.

• Query XMTP enabled addresses: XMTP users can only chat with other users who have XMTP-enabled addresses. Thus, it is essential that if you are building on top of XMTP to know if a user or group of users have XMTP enabled.

• Building a custom content type for multiplication operation: This tutorial will walk you through the process of building a custom content type dedicated to multiplying numbers. For demonstration purposes, we'll create a MultiplyCodec custom content type.

Reach Users Through Coinbase Wallet

No more cold starts: plug into the XMTP network to reach users where they are.

Coinbase Wallet has officially joined the XMTP network! Now every app built with XMTP can use their in-app messaging to reach users on Coinbase Wallet. 

Finally, we can reach the wallet.

Until now, driving growth for a new web3 app kinda sucked. Existing solutions for sending a secure message to a wallet address were all missing the key to an important dilemma: where would the user receive this message? If they have to download a new app to hear about your new app… we have a problem. 

Being able to reach major wallets unlocks growth and innovation for the whole web3 space.

Coinbase Wallet’s integration of XMTP secure messaging is a major milestone in building a network any dev can plug into, to reach users where they are. With XMTP, web3 innovation finally has the reach it needs to grow, improve, and succeed. 

This commitment from Coinbase further validates the need for an interoperable and secure network every developer can benefit from. 

Coinbase Wallet built its inbox using XMTP to ensure that: 

• All messages are fully secure and private. Messages are encrypted end-to-end between participants and stored in XMTP's progressively decentralized network. Coinbase does not have access to users’ messages, ensuring that their conversations remain private.

• Digital assets can be transacted using the same inbox. The ability to send global payments for free in a way that feels like WhatsApp + Cash App is such a massive innovation for the entire web3 space.

• End-users own their communications. The Coinbase Wallet inbox is tied to users’ web3 identity, which means they will find their messages and contacts in every other app within the XMTP network, including Lenster, ConverseApp, OrbApp, and others. (Explore apps)
