The development of blockchain technology as well as the crypto market leads to an increasing demand for NFT expansion and based on those advantages, the establishment of specific and effective standards is being paid attention to and researched for improvement through many stages. The idea is simple and seeks to create a smart contract interface that can represent and control any number of fungible and non-fungible token types

However, the early formation of standards has caused many problems such as the case of ERC20 which was very popular in the early stages but had high costs: With the Ethereum network becoming increasingly congested, using ERC to trade, buy and sell or interact with smart contracts can be time-consuming and expensive. In addition, there is the problem of security that ERC 20 Tokens can be attacked by vulnerabilities in smart contracts on Ethereum. Fraud at ERC 20 also occurs frequently because the creation of ERC 20 is so easy that almost anyone can create their own ERC 20, so fraud in the crypto market with ERC 20 tokens is more common. The static structure of ERC with few flexible rules makes ERC Tokens not diverse in features.

In the case of ERC 1155 is a token standard on Ethereum that allows the creation of ERC-20 tokens and ERC 721 tokens (NFTs) in a single smart contract. It seems that the creation of ERC 1155 is to solve the remaining technological problems of ERC-20 but ERC 1155 still has many limitations such as difficulty in understanding and using due to the complex nature of ERC 1155, it can be difficult for those who are new to blockchain or do not have in-depth knowledge of it. In addition, there is the problem of changing state because ERC 1155 allows the issuance of both fungible and non-fungible tokens in the same contract, changing the state of one token can affect all other tokens in that contract.

In order to accommodate the growing need for a comprehensive standardization of a certain standard for NFTs as well as the related functions within it, we’re excited to announce the upcoming launch of the Ethereum Request for Comments 1001 (ERC-1001) - a new open standard optimized for the XTech ecosystem and current generation multi-purpose NFTs. ERC 1001 aims to optimize the need for NFT usage combined with Web3 domain name services based on the core performance and compatibility from ERC 1155 as well as the time-saving ability of ERC 20 to build the most complete and superior standard.

Why XTech establishing an unique standard

Building a secure and efficient technical standard for both token movement and general control across all blockchain networks is no simple task. However, the historical reliability of each step of ERC development, alongside a growing XTech ecosystem and specific non-fungible token technology improvements make it the most suitable technical standard to become a global standard.

Decentralized Oracle Network (DON) & Technical standard conversion

An indispensable part of ERC 1001 is The Decentralized Oracle Network, or DON for short, which combines multiple independent Oracle node operators and multiple reliable data sources to establish end-to-end decentralization. DON performs the data normalization process and randomly the Mintpass permission becomes Mintpass with the number of characters displayed.

DONs enable the creation of hybrid smart contracts, where onchain code and offchain infrastructure are combined to support advanced decentralized applications (dApps) that react to real-world events and interoperate with traditional systems.

Many XTech services, such as XTech Price Feeds, incorporate three layers of decentralization—at the data source, individual node operator, and oracle network levels—to eliminate any single point of failure. XTech Price Feeds already help secure tens of billions of dollars across smart contract ecosystems through this multi-layered decentralization approach, ensuring smart contracts can safely rely on data inputs during their execution.

XTech Decentralized Oracle Network

Additionally at XTech, DON 1.0 controls the coding and distribution of the Mint Pass output. Specifically, DON 1.0 performs an algorithmic randomization process to determine the specific number of characters assigned to each individual Mint Pass. In this version, Mint Pass with ERC 20 standard will be changed to technical standard due to security cross-chain encryption issues and to ensure optimal testing science. The Contract Application Binary Interface (ABI) to create an interface to any ERC-20 Token we will use a simplified ABI, to make it a low friction example, then the technical coordination is converted to ERC 1155 to accommodate Batch Transfer & Batch Minting as well as ERC 1155 compliant Multi-Token Contract consideration. In addition to the predefined factors, we have to consider ID and Amount because ERC 1155 uses an ID system to identify each token, along with an amount indicating how many tokens exist. However, the ID at ERC 20 of Mint Pass will remain the same, and only the attribute will change.

Technically, the Contract interface is the most important part of the ERC-1155 standard, including all the functions and events needed to define the functionality of the smart contract, so we decided that DON 1.0 recomputes the entire Mint Pass ERC 20 and provides a separate optimized interface for the XTech SDK. The main problem of Mint Pass ERC 20 may be the security and data leakage, while Mint Pass in ERC 1155 standard is equipped with SafeTransfer to ensure the safety of token transfer, ERC-1155 supports the safeTransferFrom and safeBatchTransferFrom functions, ensuring that transactions are only executed if the recipient is a valid smart contract and has the function to process the transfer. The rules and structure of ERC 1155 make this standard a powerful tool in developing diverse blockchain applications, from games to DeFi projects, so it can be applied in the construction of XTech's Web3 Name Service.

Duplicate Data Reporting System (DDRS) & Quality assurance technology

Security is a fundamental element of Mint Passes, which are intended to directly secure high-value contracts. To that end, ERC 1001 is secured by a newly invented duplicate management system never before seen in the blockchain industry called the Duplicate Data Reporting System (DDRS). DDRS is used to control domain name requests and check domain duplicates based on Reporting technology that automatically distributes from DDMC and responds to the request. DDRS will consist of decentralized oracle networks whose sole purpose is to monitor the services revolving around Mint Passes for malicious activity that could lead to financial loss. Importantly, DDRS will consist of node committees that are completely independent of the node committees they are responsible for monitoring, completely separating anomaly detection and domain name services.

The Duplicate Data Reporting System operates independently as a verification layer and is also tasked with periodically sending heartbeat checks when the system is operating normally. If the Duplicate Data Reporting System’s heartbeat messages stop or its readers detect any nefarious activity, an emergency shutdown is automatically triggered to stop a particular Mint Pass service. The pause allows for the protection of user funds from a potential black swan event that impacts the service. While the Duplicate Data Reporting System will initially consist of high-quality readers that are independent of the ERC 1001 services they protect, dApps that secure a large amount of value through an ERC 1001 service can join the Duplicate Data Reporting System to provide their users with greater assurance that any anomalous activity or duplication issues will be detected and mitigated.

XTech Duplicate Data Reporting System

Duplicate Data Reporting System is a decentralized implementation of risk management commonly used when securing high-value Mint Passes. The Duplicate Data Reporting System revolutionizes the way risk is managed within the XTech infrastructure by establishing a system of checks and balances that separates responsibilities and minimizes any one group’s control over the operation of ERC 1001 services. Importantly, the system is also scalable and future-proof through additions such as AI to enhance detection techniques.

This special system built by XTech is also responsible for controlling the Mint Pass's operational capabilities, with a fixed standard from ERC 1001, Mint Pass in the form of NFT requires high-end technology due to highly secure encryption. All NFTs have a uint256 tokenId variable called tokenId, so for any ERC-1001 Contract, the pair contract address, uint256 tokenId must be globally unique.

The core of ERC 1001 Seamlessly Connected to X Name Service

The introduction of ERC 1001 is designed to rapidly expand what developers can build on top of Web3 Name Services. Entirely new technical standard technology applications can leverage NFTs across all chains at once, as well as leverage the unique properties of specific chains or applications and assets on those chains.

This opens up a whole new range of NFT and Web 3 Domain applications such as projects that leverage the scalability efficiency of one feature for an NFT, the diversity of another domain, the storage capabilities of a third system, and the payment security of a fourth checker to create a unique hybrid smart control application with superior functionality. The possibilities are truly limitless and we are excited to bring an initial implementation to the blockchain industry in the near future.

Whether you are a user, interface, application, NFTs or existing Web3 Name Service, we would like to hear your feedback on ERC 1001 for further improvement. Please share any feedback with us.

Back in the days, when the Internet wasn’t so mainstream, one of the main problems that users faced was that domain names hadn’t been matched up to Internet protocol (IP) addresses. This made them very unfriendly towards the average Joe, who had to type in the IP address of the website they wanted to visit, as in to literally type in the numbers.

Unlike traditional IPs, cryptocurrency addresses represent even longer strings of numbers and letters. If a user wants to send another user funds over the Ethereum network, they would have to input the address and make sure that each number and letter is written correctly.

It’s also important to know that, in this regard, blockchain-based technology is very punishing. This is because if you fail to input the address correctly and mistype a letter, the funds you send will be irreversibly lost. There’s no central authority to contact to reverse or refund the transaction – that money is lost.

And just like Domain Name Services (DNS) came to life when using the Internet, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) came to be.

ENS allows for a readable username that is portable across dApps and blockchains. Why is it important for the Web 3.0 world?

As the cryptocurrency space is highly technical, it can be overwhelming for first-time users and non-tech-savvy individuals to onboard.

Take crypto transactions, for example. To send a crypto payment, you need a long public wallet address composed of a string of digits and letters of the alphabet that looks like gibberish. Moreover, users have a different public address for every cryptocurrency, making it difficult to manage and confusing for crypto beginners.

XNS, short for X Name Service, aims to make the crypto and decentralized finance space a bit simpler by allowing a user to create a universal nickname for all your public addresses and decentralized websites. Instead of having an unreadable string of keys for each crypto address, you’ll have a single XNS domain, like “Alex.x.tech,” where you can receive any kind of crypto and NFTs.

XNS aims to become the naming protocol of the decentralized internet by creating portable Web 3.0 usernames that are interoperable across all blockchains and decentralized apps (dApps). To understand its impact, let’s take a look at how XNS works.

What is XNS?

In a nutshell, XNS is a name and lookup service built on the Ethereum & Base blockchain that allows crypto users to translate their machine-readable addresses to human-readable addresses. Think of it as a nickname generator for public addresses, aiming to make crypto more accessible.

Say your friend wants to pay you back for dinner in cryptocurrency. To do so, you must share your Ethereum public address made up of 42 hexadecimal characters, which might look like “0xDC25EF3F5B8A186998338A2ADA83795FBA2D695E.” This is the equivalent of your IBAN, enabling others to send crypto to your wallet. With XNS, you can create a “nickname” for your public address, so instead of sharing that complicated string of characters with your friend, you’ll have a link, like “Alex.x.tech” — which is automatically connected to your public address.

Besides Ethereum addresses, XNS also offers human-readable domains for other crypto wallets, websites, content hashes and metadata — aiming to be your Web3 username, connecting all your addresses and websites under a single nickname, so that you can receive any type of cryptocurrency or NFTs via your XNS domain.

As per the XNS Documentation, the protocol calls itself “a distributed, open, and extensible naming system” that offers decentralized, blockchain-secured domain naming and look-up services. Due to its decentralized nature, XNS isn’t controlled by a single entity. This makes XNS more secure than centralized naming services as there is no single point of failure.

X Name Service (XNS) takes the exact same concept as the Domain Name Service (DNS) but adjusts it for the needs of XTech users. At its core, the X Name Service is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system that operates on the Ethereum & Base blockchain.

It aims to map human-readable names to machine-readable identifiers. In this case, the human-readable name can be something like “admin.x.tech,” whereas the machine-readable identifier can be the Ethereum address (or other cryptocurrency addresses, for that matter.)

In the image below, we have given an example of what it looks like. The address belongs to the XTech. The XNS domain name that we created is just an example for the purpose of this guide:

XTech Address - XNS Domain

The standard Ethereum & Base Address is converted into a human-readable text (foundation.x.tech). This means that users are able to send funds or interact with “foundation.x.tech” instead of with the standard address. Obviously, this makes it a lot easier for regular users and also tightens the possibility of a mistake considerably.

According to the official XNS documentation, the system “has similar goals to DNS, the Internet’s Domain Name Service, but has significantly different architecture due to the capabilities and constraints provided by the Ethereum & Base blockchain.”

Similar to DNS, XNS also operates on a system made of dot-separated hierarchical names that are called domains. The owner of a domain also has full control over the subdomains.

How does the XNS work?

XNS is built on two Ethereum smart contracts. The first smart contract is the XNS registry, which records all the domains registered on XNS and stores three critical pieces of information about each domain: the owner of the domain, the resolver for the domain, and the caching time for all records under the domain. The second smart contract is the resolver, which translates the domain names to the machine-readable addresses and vice versa. This second smart contract matches each domain to the corresponding user, website or address.

Those wishing to create their Web3 username can visit the XTech app and start by searching for an available domain name. Once you find one, you’ll simply have to follow the registration process, which includes confirming two transactions from your wallet and paying the yearly fee, for names longer than five characters. Once you own the domain, you can link it to your crypto wallets, and websites, and create multiple subdomains, like Alex.x.tech — all connected under the same XNS domain.

There are two core components to the X Name Service. Namely, these are the registry and the resolvers. The architecture of the system looks like this:

XNS Registry & Resolvers

Registry

The registry is composed of a smart contract designed to maintain a list of all the domains and subdomains while also storing three essential pieces of information about each. These pieces are:

The owner of the domain

The resolver of the domain

The caching time-to-live for all the records that are under the domain

The purpose of the XNS registry is very straightforward – it’s to map from a name to the resolver who’s responsible for it. Meanwhile, owners of domains in the XNS registry are allowed to:

Change the ownership of the subdomains

Transfer ownership of their domain to another address

Set the resolver and the time-to-live (TTL) for the domain

Resolvers

Resolvers, on the other hand, are responsible for the process of translating the names into addresses. Every contract that implements the required standards is capable of being a resolver in the X Name Service. However, resolving a name in XNS is a process composed of two steps.

The first one is to ask the registry what resolver is responsible for the said name. The second one is to ask that particular resolver for the answer to the query. In terms of architecture, it looks like this:

XTech how do resolvers work?

X Name Service functions in the ecosystem

XNS owns the domain name function that users have for themselves one or more private domain names that come with their own website that can be accessed from the internet anywhere and without any limitation and ownership time. XTech designed an IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) with superior features to create a decentralized file system, helping to store and share data efficiently and securely. Instead of storing data on centralized servers, IPFS distributes data across multiple nodes in the network while optimizing security control from the Data Domain Management Center (DDMC) is a high-level data program brought by XTech to store data about Web3 Name Service of users as well as perform security with super encryption measures based on extremely high dispersion and reliability.

With the NFT format of XNS, users can completely use it as a pure Non-fungible token, buying and trading are created with the best possible conditions for traders at the same time with advanced technology called real time continuously helping each XNS avoid losing value or inconsistent transactions at the same time. In the XTech ecosystem, XNS is more special as an important key to participate and experience the completely new SocialFi features. Users use their own XNS as the most useful tool in all cases to determine the level of engagement while increasing the value and rewards over time. XTech brings XNS to a high level of user authenticity, there is no case of duplication or forgery allowing one or more XNS to be owned by each individual account in the XTech ecosystem.

Conclusion

XNS is a critical advent in the cryptocurrency field and a step towards solving some of the pressing issues that riddle the industry – namely, user experience.

Having to deal with long strings of random numbers and letters is oftentimes the reason for mistakes, and in the field of crypto, mistakes are quite commonly very expensive. Normalizing addresses and presenting them in a human-readable and friendly way is a step towards improving the overall user experience the way DNS improved the UX for Internet users.

At the same time, though, DNS records of domains and names are typically stored on centralized servers, making them prone to hacks. XNS, on the other hand, are secured by Ethereum’s blockchain, making them multifold and more secure.

That said, the X Name Service is undoubtedly a very important invention and an innovation that’s quickly become widespread and used by thousands of people.

For example, 1 ETH is equivalent to any other circulating 1 ETH in the market.

Why is ERC-20 important in the Ethereum ecosystem?

The ERC-20 standard is the most widely adopted standard in the cryptocurrency market overall, specifically within the Ethereum network, with tens of thousands of tokens circulating under the ERC-20 standard. Therefore, it can be said that the applicability and importance of this standard significantly impact the crypto space.

Ethereum is a flexible blockchain with numerous applications, mainly due to its ability to execute smart contracts. These smart contracts have various potential uses. For instance, they can be grouped together to build decentralized applications (dApps), which are applications based on blockchain. They can also be used to initiate cryptocurrencies running on the Ethereum blockchain.

According to the EIP-20 proposal, an ERC-20 token is generated through a smart contract, ensuring that the token can only be traded when and if the smart contract terms are met. Therefore, ERC-20 prevents transactions where either party has malicious intentions.

If you plan to create your own cryptocurrency on Ethereum and want it to be widely used, it must be compatible with everything running on the blockchain. It needs to work with dApps, blockchain games, crypto wallets, and other services designed for Ethereum tokens.

Thus, the ERC-20 standard was created to enhance interoperability with smart contracts, making transactions and financial activities more transparent and secure. According to the EIP-20 proposal, developers can use APIs to enable dApps to apply ERC-20 rules in DeFi activities. Consequently, the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem has been significantly supported by the use of APIs for the ERC-20 standard.

How ERC-20 works

ERC-20 provides a set of coding functions. Cryptocurrency tokens that implement these functions are known as ERC-20 tokens because they adhere to this standard. These functions are divided into three categories: getters, functions, and events.

Getters simply return information and do not modify anything. There are three getters:

Total Supply: Returns the total number of existing tokens.

Balance: Returns the number of tokens owned by an address/account.

Allowance: Allows an account to spend a certain number of tokens belonging to another owner. For example, if address A grants an allowance of 50 tokens to address B, then address B can spend up to 50 tokens on behalf of address A.

Functions perform an action. There are also three functions:

Transfer: Moves tokens from the sender's address to the recipient's address.

Approve: Sets the allowance amount that a spender can use.

TransferFrom: Transfers tokens from the sender to the recipient using the allowance mechanism.

Events are emitted when an action occurs. There are two events:

Transfer: Emitted when tokens are sent from the sender to the recipient.

Approval: Emitted when the owner approves a number of tokens for a spender to use.

Coding Functions of ERC-20

Application of the ERC-20 standard

The ERC-20 standard consists of nine mandatory functions:

Name: The token's name must be unique and not duplicate other token names.

Symbol (Ticker): The token's symbol. Unlike the Name, the Symbol can be the same across different tokens.

Decimals: The smallest decimal unit in which the token can be transacted.

TotalSupply: This function represents the total number of tokens in circulation.

BalanceOf: Function that shows the balance of a specific wallet.

Transfer: Function that transfers tokens to a particular wallet address.

TransferFrom: Function that transfers tokens from one wallet address to another.

Approve: Function that allows a third party to spend a certain amount of the owner's tokens.

Allowance: This function lets the token owner modify the Approve function, such as the amount of tokens permitted.

By combining all these functions, users can create an ERC-20 token compatible with smart contracts. Users can query the total supply, check balances, make transactions, and grant approvals to dApps for financial activities.

The ERC-20 standard

Additionally, the flexibility of the ERC-20 standard is an advantage, as its rules are not confined to a specific framework. This allows projects and developers to implement various types of ERC-20 tokens with different functionalities in the market. For example:

Governance tokens: UNI (Uniswap), SUSHI (SushiSwap)

Stablecoins: USDT, USDC, and many other functions within the crypto market.

Advantages & disadvantages of ERC20 tokens

Advantages of ERC-20

Fungibility

Each token following the ERC-20 standard is interchangeable and has the same value. For example, if a user holds any 1 USDC, it can be used to buy, sell, or exchange with other tokens, much like using a 10,000 VND bill to purchase fish. This fungibility allows ERC-20 tokens to function as a monetary asset, as holders prefer tokens without individual distinctions, which would otherwise hinder their replaceability and reduce the standard's utility.

Flexibility

ERC-20 tokens are highly flexible due to their ability to interact with smart contracts. This enables their use across various purposes and applications. For instance, ERC-20 tokens can be used as assets in AMM transactions, staked to earn interest, or employed in yield farming.

Disadvantages of ERC-20

Scam Risk

Despite ERC-20's aim to facilitate easy token creation for smart contract interaction, many have exploited this maliciously. Developers can create meme coins with smart contracts designed for honeypots, rug pulls, or unrestricted minting at any time. Therefore, users should be cautious when participating in the DeFi space, as many projects are initially set up to deceive and disguised as promising ventures. Thorough research is essential before investing.

Scalability

The ERC-20 standard is limited to the Ethereum network, which suffers from poor scalability. This impacts the operations and transactions of ERC-20 tokens. There have been instances where transferring tokens on the Ethereum network cost up to $100 in transaction fees, reducing the demand for ERC-20 tokens and pushing users toward Layer 2 networks with lower fees.

ERC-20 vs. ERC-721 vs. ERC-1155

Ethereum has several token standards. Besides ERC-20, two other significant token standards are ERC-721 and ERC-1155. Here's what makes them different:

ERC-20 is a fungible token standard. Fungible tokens are identical in type and value. Cryptocurrencies are an example of fungible tokens.

ERC-721 is a non-fungible token (NFT) standard. NFTs are used to represent something unique, such as a digital collectible.

ERC-1155 is a multi-token standard. It is a smart contract interface that can manage multiple types of tokens. ERC-1155 tokens can perform functions similar to both ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens.

Notable ERC-20 tokens

Given the sheer number of ERC-20 tokens in existence—over 500,000, according to Etherscan—it's impossible to cover them all. These tokens include some of the largest cryptocurrencies, smaller projects, and a fair share of scams. The ease of creating a token on Ethereum means the quality of these projects can vary significantly.

Here are some of the most notable ERC-20 tokens and their purposes:

Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC): A tokenized version of Bitcoin that can be used on the Ethereum blockchain. It's backed 1:1 by Bitcoin reserves.

Polygon (MATIC): A Layer 2 blockchain that extends Ethereum by providing faster, cheaper transactions. It operates alongside Ethereum.

Shiba Inu (SHIB): A popular meme token with a dedicated fanbase, though not highly regarded as an investment or serious crypto project.

Uniswap (UNI): A decentralized cryptocurrency exchange operating via smart contracts without central authority, allowing users to swap cryptocurrencies.

Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Binance USD (BUSD): Stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar, designed to maintain a stable value of $1.

It's worth noting that some of these cryptocurrencies are available on multiple blockchains, not just as ERC-20 tokens. For example, Tether exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum but is also available on Solana, Algorand, and several other blockchains.

The future of ERC-20

The future of ERC-20 is expected to continue contributing to the development of the Ethereum ecosystem. This standard has empowered developers to build on Ethereum, facilitating network effects that have led to the emergence of many new assets. As the Ethereum ecosystem continues to grow, the ERC-20 standard will likely play an important role in its development.

This shift in philosophy has profoundly impacted areas such as payments and multinational finance. However, the transition from Web2 to Web3 could dramatically affect how social networks operate:

Users can freely control their data without relying on intermediaries from organizations.

Costs incurred can be minimized because there is no need to use intermediaries' services in transactions.

These ideas were the genesis of SocialFi - a Web3 version of social networking platforms.

What is SocialFi?

SocialFi, short for Social Finance, is the fusion of social media and DeFi. It is considered the social network revolution of Web3, where users take control of their content instead of relying on centralized powers operating the platform.

SocialFi empowers content creators. They can be as creative as they wish and enjoy greater control over their data, unlike current Web2 platforms. Additionally, users on SocialFi have numerous opportunities to earn money through interactions and engagement without any restrictions on monetizing content.

On SocialFi platforms, content creators, including influencers and participants, seek freedom of expression, data control, and the ability to earn money and interact on social media. Monetization typically occurs through cryptocurrencies, while NFT assets drive digital identity and ownership management.

What is SocialFi?

The Context Behind SocialFi's Emergence

The DeFi market is saturated

The DeFi market has reached a significant size and is becoming saturated. As of now, DeFi has entered a saturation phase, prompting the emergence of SocialFi as a new development for the market as a whole. This motivates the entire market to attract more users and expand into new areas.

Overcome limitations of Web2 Social Media

SocialFi is a solution to address the limitations of Web2 Social Media platforms.

Every day, over half of the world's population, 58.4%, spends an average of 2 hours and 27 minutes on social media. However, the attention, interaction, engagement, and data generated only benefit a few centralized entities and their shareholders.

There have also been many cases of centralized decision-making when platforms censor content creators discussing specific topics. While these processes often aim to protect a broader user base from harmful posts, decentralized management processes, if any, would be more suitable for the nature of Web3.

The third limitation that Web2 applications face is digital ownership rights and the ability to track ownership. This is particularly important for creators and artists sharing their work online. However, the lack of digital ownership rights creates loopholes for copyright infringement if adequate controls are not in place.

Another shortcoming of Web2 platforms is the inability to monetize brand assets. In most cases, influencers who have built their brand can indirectly monetize their brand assets. However, the social media following and trust they have built do not directly translate into money in the bank.

SocialFi integrates DeFi features and utilizes social tokens to enhance user engagement and motivation.

The community participating in Web3 is increasing, and there is a need to share more content

Ultimately, the growth of the Web3 participating community also plays a crucial role in making SocialFi a new trend. With increasing participants and a growing demand for content sharing, SocialFi offers them a decentralized way to control their assets and data on social networks.

SocialFi is a further development movement from the social token trend

In March 2021, the Social token trend was first mentioned, sparking enthusiasm with numerous projects like Rally, Bitclout (DeSo), and others. Social tokens enable influential brands, organizations, and individuals to launch their tokens to represent themselves, enhancing community interaction and delivering value through token features.

While SocialFi doesn't necessarily require the involvement of Social tokens, the social aspect of Social tokens can drive the development of SocialFi projects and lay the groundwork for more active engagement within the Web3 community.

Unpacking SocialFi's Popularity

Open and adaptable data

Traditional Web2 social networks operate based on complex data networks called "Social Graphs." These graphs map users' relationships, interactions, followings, preferences, etc.

Web 2.0 social platforms are private systems where hosting companies own or control all data and behavior analytics. Users need to gain ownership or control over this data, which results in the frequent disconnection of social networks from other platforms. Therefore, users' identities and experiences may never be connected across social media platforms. Users must start over to rebuild their connections and social histories to use new platforms.

Meanwhile, SocialFi aims to establish a foundational layer where users' social media data is transparent, permissionless, flexible, and, most importantly, under their control. This model, known as "open data," allows users to seamlessly engage with new applications built on the same social network without encountering these duplicative issues. Anyone using a Web3 Social platform can bring their data to any application.

An example to illustrate "open data" more clearly: We can observe the emergence of open data in current Web2 social media applications such as Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram), which launched Threads, allowing users to instantly follow and connect with their Instagram friends upon signing up. However, Meta still controls and manages user data on Instagram and Threads. This may impact users and, particularly, creators when platforms change monetization models, moderation, or revenue sharing.

Difference between Web2 and Web3

Huge potential for new combinations

The SocialFi platform is built on blockchain technology and is highly compatible with other smart contracts and protocols. This open data architecture enables developers to integrate seamlessly with Web3 Social protocols and applications, such as connecting users' chain histories to populate their social profiles, displaying their owned NFTs, and enabling them to tokenize content and posts into NFTs for sale. Web2 social media platforms cannot do this due to each platform's singular nature.

Integrating with open data also allows developers to combine their social platforms with protocols from DeFi apps, metaverse games, DAOs, NFTs, and everything in between.

Facilitate community building and development

The blockchain infrastructure serves as a powerful tool for connecting people toward common goals. In recent years, we have witnessed the rise of token-powered communities, exemplified by instances such as:

Bidding for the United States Constitution (ConstitutionDAO)

Voting for DeFi protocol governance (Uniswap, Safe, Maker, Gnosis)

Investing in digital art pieces (e.g., PleasrDAO)

Building social clubs around NFT collections

Integrating innovations like Dynamic NFTs with emerging SocialFi protocols will elevate these experiences to new heights. This can be further enhanced by incorporating real-world data into Web3. For example, certifications, purchases, and more relevant relationships can be instantly established with new relationships and commerce emerging.

Anti-Censorship and Property Rights

Freedom of speech is paramount for social media platforms, although it should be limited to a certain extent with ethical and societal standards. With traditional platforms' power and control over our data, they have absolute authority to regulate what is displayed on the platform and remove users at their discretion. Users have no choice but to accept it.

A recent case of platform censorship was revealed after Elon Musk took over Twitter (now renamed "X"). A series of internal Twitter documents showed how the company's app-controlled information on the platform at the government's request or information they deemed unsafe.

These examples demonstrate that in traditional Web2 platforms, users never genuinely own their identities, accounts, and, in some cases, their voices. SocialFi addresses this issue to some extent. Applications built on SocialFi protocols can still moderate content. However, users retain full ownership and can leave one app and move to another while keeping their data. The core principle here is that users are not locked into a specific app, and whenever they want, they can abandon a social media app and move to an entirely new one, taking all their data with them.

Why is SocialFi important?

SocialFi applications are revolutionizing the social media industry by combining the power of social networks with the decentralized nature of Web3. Here are some key benefits of SocialFi:

Decentralization

Traditional Web2 platforms are highly centralized, storing all data on a single server. Large tech companies monopolize control over user data, privacy, interactions, and monetization.

SocialFi eliminates these intermediaries and empowers users with complete control over their network. Its decentralized nature means users have better control over their earnings and data. Distributing data across different web nodes also reduces the risk of privacy violations by eliminating a single point of weakness often found in central servers.

Content control

SocialFi balances between censoring objectionable content and allowing harmful content to circulate online. By decentralizing data on the blockchain, SocialFi platforms employ content moderation tools to manage public posts. Users on network nodes can then choose whom to interact with and block, giving them responsibility for approving harmful content. As a result, SocialFi grants content creators more freedom of speech.

SocialFi acts as a bridge between personal branding, content creation, and business in the decentralized digital age. It promises a fairer, more transparent, and equitable social media ecosystem where everyone is recognized, rewarded, and has control over their online presence and interactions.

Make money on SocialFi.

The SocialFi network offers various ways for content creators and followers to earn money. Users have the autonomy to decide which content to monetize.

For example, creators can use their tokens to control who can interact with their content. Users must own these tokens to participate in interactions, reduce spam, and encourage high-quality content. Ultimately, this can generate high income for influential individuals on social media.

Additionally, creators can earn money based on their follower count and level of interaction. They can sell exclusive products or NFTs to generate income.

Advantages and limitations of SocialFi

Advantages

For the Social Network projects

For social network projects, SocialFi offers the following benefits:

Creating new revenue streams by integrating DeFi into the platform.

Enhancing user interaction by creating social tokens representing ownership in the platform or allowing users to participate in decentralized governance to shape the platform's direction.

Improving security and privacy for social network projects by utilizing decentralized infrastructure solutions such as decentralized storage, identity, and cross-chain messaging.

For Defi projects

SocialFi can provide several advantages for DeFi projects, such as:

Accessing users who frequently engage in social media but are unfamiliar with financial activities attracts media attention and community interest.

Creating social features for users to communicate and participate in project development decision-making processes, thereby enhancing the interaction of projects.

For SocialFi users

The development of SocialFi platforms aims to provide users with maximum convenience, empowering users to take control of their information. Additionally, users of the platform enjoy benefits such as:

Allowing users to access and use various DeFi and social media services on the same platform by integrating different blockchain applications.

Controlling their data and personal information through integrating decentralized identity solutions and blockchain security mechanisms.

Enhancing user experience, enabling users to interact and monetize based on the value they share on social media.

The advantages of SocialFi for Web3

Limitations

Complexity

SocialFi platforms can be complex and challenging for users unfamiliar with using decentralized wallets and operations of SocialFi projects on the blockchain platform.

Scalability

Blockchain technology has limitations in the number of transactions that can be processed simultaneously. This can lead to delays and high transaction fees, causing difficulties for users using the platform.

Legal regulations

Many countries still need clear regulations on cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance. This can create challenges for SocialFi projects' operations or pose legal and regulatory risks for users.

Security risks

Ensuring security for SocialFi platforms will be much more complicated than for DeFi or traditional social media projects. This requires consensus from users and project parties to prevent security breaches through vulnerabilities.

Limitation of application

Despite its significant potential, the popularity of SocialFi still needs to be higher due to the lack of support from powerful entities. They have also yet to be applied to create tangible values.

Content control framework

Decentralized social networks allow users to share content without being moderated by any organization. However, SocialFi platforms must also have a regulatory framework to ensure that user-shared content is not infringing, harmful, or inaccurate before being widely distributed in the community.

SocialFi's limitations for users

Principal Challenges Confronting SocialFi

Scalable Infrastructure

Can blockchain handle such a large volume of data? DeSo, a blockchain layer designed for SocialFi applications, claims to have better scalability than most existing layer one chains because they are built for SocialFi platforms. To address scalability, they use indexing, block size management, vertical synchronization, and sharding.

They have claimed to handle 80 posts per second for 4 million users compared to Twitter's 6000 posts per second for 300 million users. This performance is achieved by increasing block size. However, they can also rely on other techniques like vertical synchronization and sharding to increase throughput further.

Warp synchronization provides verified transactions without all nodes needing to verify the entire transaction history. Sharding provides parallel processing capabilities to increase throughput significantly. By using these two techniques, DeSo believes they can scale the platform to a billion users.

Sustainable economic model

The most challenging aspect of the DeFi regime and derivative business models is creating economic models that can be sustained through stressful and exceptional situations. Whether it's GameFi or SocialFi, some platforms promise very high rewards for participants. However, these rewards are currently only short-term growth measures.

Before these derivative business models become market trends, they are rigorously tested through market cycles and black swan events.

For example, if you invest in an influencer's social token to interact with their posts, you face risks when they post harmful content. Harmful content can quickly lead to a depreciation of the social token and create a series of losses for system participants.

In the social media platform, where influencers operate in echo chambers, the increasing losses in an important microeconomic system can easily lead to systemic spread effects.

Summary

Despite facing challenges with infrastructure and economic models, the SocialFi platform still holds significant promise. As the world moves swiftly towards innovative economic paradigms, SocialFi represents a notable advancement in this direction.

For future social networks that integrate DeFi principles, true strength will emerge only after overcoming various setbacks and demonstrating resilience. This principle applies equally to SocialFi. The growth potential is boundless if market conditions persist in supporting progress and investment opportunities in SocialFi projects.

XTech stands as an X Multiplayer Universe, where all X users enjoy the same social experience but with added on-chain features.
