What does it mean to be a community token? In short, tokenization means that a community is using tokens as its main means of coordination. The token here can also be a reference to some more influential memes or value sets.

For example, FWB is token. Membership is limited to token holders who exceed a certain threshold. Activities in the community and all links of the content will be directly linked to tokens. In short, life in FWB will be completely centered on tokens. Tokens are both a driver and a result.

In contrast, although time magazine also launched an NFT series. But this does not mean that time magazine has become a token community. Because the user group of time magazine did not use tokens to promote any activities or organizations around the brand itself.

De platformization

Token community is a deplatform social network.

Given that members of token communities use tokens as the main means of coordination, such people are likely to resist being directly linked to or attached to any communication tool or social media platform. They will be more interested in decentralized infrastructure solutions.

For most token communities today, a good way to test this is to ask: if their main communication tools (such as discord) disappear, will this community still exist?

De platformization means that the token community can truly realize globalization and openness.

Self management

In self-management organizations, leadership is distributed among roles, not individuals.

In a community, there is not only one leader, but many. Hierarchy is determined dynamically according to the specific functions performed, the scope of decision-making or the background of work.

The token community enables us to organize and coordinate tasks among a group of unrelated people and achieve some goals.

Collective governance

Token communities are collectively governed.

This does not mean that token holders vote on every decision of the community. On the contrary, it means that the power of Dao is ultimately in the hands of token holders.

The token community ensures that the core contributors are voted for in some way and that proposals for the entire community are created, edited and approved. The most common manifestation is treasury Governance - members of the token community have the right to speak and vote on how to allocate the community Treasury.

Although leaders may promote the development of the community, the "supreme power" of the community always belongs to the whole community.

Meme drive

Collective governance is meaningless without a common meme to move the community forward.

Token communities are striving to achieve a collective goal or maintain a common set of values. In other words, the goal of the token community is actually always to use tokens to coordinate and complete various tasks, and finally realize the diffusion of meme (consensus).

By meme, I actually mean an ideological or cultural element that will evolve in the whole network.

Take a few representative "community" cases:

Krause house: owns and operates an NBA team.

Gitcoin: support and fund public goods.

Forefront: support and build a token community.

Meme driven is a necessary part of the token community - it makes "open sharing" valuable.

"Zhenghe game"

The tokenized community is positive.

The token community will create value by building scalable value in line with community consensus on the basis of existing agreements and information. Although it is open source and has few "proprietary" resources, the token community will create value for the whole network through the incentive of token holders' contribution.

Ambitious

Finally, the token community is desirable.

Although the use of tokens by itself does not make the community self-management or decentralization, it is difficult to maximize the value of tokens unless these principles are adhered to.

However, no organization can perfectly meet the first six criteria on the first day. However, the process of community gradually striving to achieve the above standards is actually the best elaboration of the discussion of "progressive decentralization".

Economics of community tokens

Before discussing the economics of community tokens, I would like to repeat the previous argument that tokens are an investment in consensus. The token community is actually designed to use tokens to coordinate the diffusion of a consensus.

This has a profound impact on the token economy.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the economic value of agreement tokens is largely due to the "threat of fee". Taking this idea to the extreme, the feature of a token's strong enough governance ability is to ensure that "dictatorship is avoided". As the builder of the agreement, you need to help ensure that you are not disqualified. As a user, you need to help ensure that costs do not increase. As a passive investor, you need to help ensure that the agreement continues to grow.

All these goals are achieved through the Zhenghe game to ensure that the agreement remains open and as valuable to everyone as possible.

Community tokens follow a similar value accumulation path. Although the short-term value may accumulate on the token through threshold restrictions (such as access to discord, content, products, activities, etc.), the long-term value of the token will naturally arise when community members begin to strive to deepen and spread consensus.

Community tokens serve as a coordination tool for financialization in communities that have not been financialized before.

So, how can the token community achieve effective incentives? This is mainly a question of how individual members and contributors are paid so that they are not forced to allocate their time elsewhere. Unlike agreements, people need to be paid.

I don't think there is a specific answer to this question, but we have seen many imaginative experimental schemes. Paying contributors with native tokens is a way, and I believe that in the long run, there will be more creative ways to use community tokens throughout the defi ecosystem.

However, a key point to be pointed out is that the traditional pricing model of direct charge is not bad in essence, but they should be expansionary: the value obtained should be directly consistent with the value created. The economic model of token community should be viewed from the perspective of creating value for the community, rather than obtaining value from customers.

One token, multiple communities

If tokens are an investment in consensus, in fact, not every community must own or create their own tokens. The agreement has solved this problem.

The most successful protocols are based on countless platforms. To give two representative examples, Zora was originally established to build an infrastructure to support millions of NFT markets. Uniswap was established to promote the asset exchange and integration of various applications and wallets.

The most valuable community tokens will be widely used among organizations as a means of coordinated development of common memory.

You can imagine that thousands of communities have a unique collection of NFT members, and everyone has their own views on how to fund public goods. Each of them can use the same erc-20 (GTC) as a coordination tool.
