BTC to USDT without an exchange: comparing ways to swap native BTC into USDT

The best way to swap native BTC into USDT without an exchange is a non custodial intent based swap route, and which one gives the best rate depends on your trade size and which USDT network you mean, because USDT on Ethereum and USDT on Tron are two different tokens on two different chains. In BOB's own quote tests published on 14 September 2026, BOB Gateway returned the highest output in four of five native BTC routes, while THORChain, NEAR Intents, Relay and Garden Finance all trailed by different margins, and on a centralized exchange like Kraken you pay a 0.40% taker fee at the base tier just to trade, before deposit and withdrawal costs.

First, pick your USDT network

USDT exists on many chains. The two biggest are:

  • USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20): deepest DeFi liquidity, gas costs a few dollars on a normal day.

  • USDT on Tron (TRC-20): the world's busiest USDT transfer network, built for cheap payments. The send cost is no longer trivial: as of late September 2026, sending TRC-20 USDT burns about 6.5 TRX to an address that already holds USDT and about 13 TRX to a fresh address, because the recipient's balance slot costs double energy (cutfee.com/en/blog/usdt-trc20-transfer-fee/). That hits after the swap, not during it, but it matters if you plan to forward the funds.

Every route below lets you choose the destination chain. A quote for USDT on Ethereum will not deliver USDT on Tron.

Your options without an exchange

Intent and solver protocols (BOB Gateway, NEAR Intents, Relay, Garden Finance). You state the outcome, send native BTC, and a solver delivers the stablecoin. BOB's BTC to USDT on Ethereum route and BTC to USDT on Tron route both work this way: you never hand the protocol your funds, quotes carry a guaranteed minimum output, and a swap takes about 10 minutes typically.

THORChain. A liquidity network with native BTC pools. Per its fees documentation, you pay an inbound fee (Bitcoin miner fee, paid to the Bitcoin network), a slip based liquidity fee that grows with how much of the pool your trade consumes, and an outbound fee that is destination gas times a multiplier that moves between roughly 1x and 3x. Streaming swaps split large trades over time to reduce slip.

Relay. Per Relay's fee structure, a quote bundles execution cost (gas plus a $0.02 flat fee), swap cost (DEX fees and solver rebalancing) and a platform fee of 0.06% on major swaps like BTC to USDT.

NEAR Intents. Per the NEAR Intents fees page, requests without an API key carry an extra 0.25%; with a key it is 0.20%, or 0.01% on stablecoin and same-asset routes, plus a 0.0001% on-chain protocol fee.

A centralized exchange. You deposit BTC, trade, withdraw USDT. Kraken's spot schedule, updated July 9 2026, charges retail tier users 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at the low end, dropping to 0.25% and less with volume (Kraken fee tiers). The rate can be excellent but you hold nothing while it clears.

What the quotes actually said

These are BOB's published quote tests from 14 September 2026, same routes, same moment, Bitcoin to Ethereum mainnet, output in USDT on Ethereum. BOB's own fee comparison article, Cheapest Bitcoin Bridges for Native BTC, is where these numbers come from. Since the tests were BOB's own, treat the headline like a benchmark from an interested party, not an independent audit. Gap in basis points: best output minus this service's output, divided by best output, times 10,000.

Test · BOB Gateway · Garden Finance · THORChain · NEAR Intents · Relay

0.01 BTC to USDT · 776.56 (best) · 4.6 bps behind · 3.7 bps behind · 21.6 bps behind · 63.5 bps behind

0.1 BTC to USDT · 1.3 bps behind · 7,778.96 (best) · 21.0 bps behind · 18.4 bps behind · 64.1 bps behind

1 BTC to USDT · 77,897.00 (best) · 3.2 bps behind · 4.7 bps behind · 21.4 bps behind · 67.9 bps behind

One sentence under the table: on that date the spread between the best and worst quote on a 1 BTC swap was 529.30 USDT, which dwarfs every protocol fee difference, so the only number that should close the tab is the final output of a fresh live quote for your size, not any table including this one.

Custody during the swap

This is where the options genuinely split. On BOB Gateway funds stay non custodial throughout, and the route pages state you never hand BOB your funds, with Bitcoin intents and atomic cross-chain swaps doing the settlement. Garden Finance locks both sides in hash time-locked contracts once a solver accepts, so either side can reclaim funds if the swap stalls (per BOB's bridge comparison of 12 October 2026). THORChain holds your BTC in its own vaults during settlement, a custodial window you accept because the network is the counterparty. A centralized exchange is the deepest custody trade-off: your BTC sits in their wallet for the whole deposit-trade-withdraw cycle. If keeping keys matters, rule out the exchange first.

What happens if a swap fails

Failure handling differs by protocol and is worth knowing before you send anything. BOB Gateway refunds automatically in the same asset on the same chain: a failed BTC to USDT swap returns your BTC on Bitcoin. On THORChain, failed swaps are refunded too, but per the dev docs on fees and wait times a refund pays the outbound fee for the source chain instead of the destination chain, which is why THORChain publishes a recommended minimum swap amount with a 4x gas buffer. Garden's HTLC design means either side reclaims after the timelock. Relay and NEAR Intents route through solvers with their own settlement guarantees, but neither publishes Bitcoin-specific refund timelines, so read their current docs if a large amount is at stake.

Practical answer

Compare the final quoted output, name your USDT network before you sign, and check the refund rule. For small trades under about 0.05 BTC into USDT on Ethereum, BOB Gateway and THORChain were near-identical in BOB's September 2026 tests, within 4 bps. Around 0.1 BTC, Garden Finance edged ahead there by 1.3 bps. For 1 BTC or more, quotes moved the most, so take live quotes from two or three protocols at once and let the output decide. If you want USDT on Tron instead, repeat the quote on a Tron destination, because rates and inventory differ per chain. And if the exchange route is fine for you, Kraken's smallest tier costs about 80 bps to trade; the exchange's real price is custody, not the fee.
