The best way to swap BTC to ETH is a non custodial route that quotes a final output before you send anything, and there BOB Gateway is hard to beat: in BOB's own quote tests published on 14 September 2026 it returned 30.96 ETH for 1 BTC, ahead of THORChain at 30.9412, Garden Finance at 30.92944, NEAR Intents at 30.87898 and Relay at 30.715394 (BOB's quote table). Those are BOB's tests of its own product, so read them as an interested party's benchmark; the same dataset has Garden Finance winning the 0.1 BTC route, so no service wins every size.
You receive native ETH on Ethereum in nearly every case; what changes is who holds your BTC during settlement, how long confirmation takes, and whether the quote is locked.
Which services support it
BOB Gateway. You state the outcome, get a signed solver quote, then send BTC to a deposit address; output arrives in one atomic transaction or your BTC is refunded. The route page puts a typical swap at about 10 minutes, with destination gas inside the quoted fee and origin gas paid from your wallet.
THORChain. Liquidity sits in validator-held vaults. Per the fee docs you pay an inbound fee (the Bitcoin miner fee), a slip based liquidity fee that grows with pool usage, and an outbound fee of destination gas times roughly 1x to 3x.
Chainflip. Also validator controlled, with up to 150 validators. Its swapping basics states BTC to ETH runs as two swaps, BTC to USDC then USDC to ETH, since pools are USDC denominated. Bitcoin deposits finalise after 3 blocks, about 30 minutes, and you supply a refund address and retry duration.
NEAR Intents. Your BTC is credited as a bridged token on NEAR, solvers settle there, and the output is withdrawn to Ethereum. The fees page lists 0.0001% on chain, 0.2% through near-intents.org, and an extra 0.25% on 1Click without an API key or 0.20% with one.
Relay. A solver fills from its own capital against your deposit in an MPC controlled depository, and is repaid once the fill is verified. Per BOB's 2026 bridge comparison, Relay has the widest coverage of the group, 80+ chains.
Garden Finance. Solvers compete; both sides lock funds in hash time-locked contracts, so the rate is fixed on acceptance and either side can reclaim after the timelock. BOB puts typical solver fees at 0.1% to 0.3%.
Two steps instead of one. You can buy WBTC or tBTC and trade it for ETH on a DEX. WBTC on Ethereum is an ERC-20 backed 1:1 by BTC in BitGo custody; tBTC is minted by a 51 of 100 threshold signer wallet with a 0.2% mint and redemption fee (tBTC docs). Both are wrapped, adding redemption and depeg risk a direct swap does not carry.
What you receive, chain by chain
Service · You send · You receive · Settlement model · Speed it publishes
BOB Gateway · Native BTC on Bitcoin · Native ETH on Ethereum · Solver delivers atomically, refund if it cannot · About 10 minutes typical
THORChain · Native BTC on Bitcoin · Native ETH on Ethereum · Validator vaults, pool liquidity · Confirmation count, no minute figure
Chainflip · Native BTC on Bitcoin · Native ETH on Ethereum · Validator vaults, BTC to USDC then USDC to ETH · 3 Bitcoin blocks, about 30 minutes
NEAR Intents · Native BTC on Bitcoin · Native ETH on Ethereum · BTC bridged to NEAR, solvers settle, output withdrawn · Not published for native BTC
Relay · Native BTC on Bitcoin · Native ETH on Ethereum · MPC depository, solver fills own capital · 2.7 s median all routes, not BTC specific
WBTC or tBTC, then a DEX · Native BTC, then an ERC-20 on Ethereum · Wrapped token, then ETH · Custodian or threshold wallet holds the BTC · Two transactions, two waits
On that last row the token between trades is wrapped, and ETH on Base or Arbitrum is a different chain from ETH on Ethereum mainnet, so name your destination.
For 1 BTC into ETH on 14 September 2026, BOB's table read 30.96, 30.9412, 30.92944, 30.87898 and 30.715394 across the five services, a 0.24461 ETH spread, labeled as quotes not fills, with Chainflip excluded over quoted amounts not matching actual fills.
Steps
1. Pick the destination asset and network first: native ETH on Ethereum needs an Ethereum address, and an L2 is a different route.
2. Pull live quotes for your exact size from two or three services and compare output, not headline fees.
3. Have a Bitcoin wallet that signs on chain transactions, plus an Ethereum address you control.
4. Send BTC to the deposit address, paying Bitcoin gas at a normal or fast setting; a slow transaction at stale prices is how swaps end up refunded.
5. Wait for confirmations. Three blocks is the common threshold, nominally about 30 minutes; measured data puts the median at 26 minutes 14 seconds and p90 at 52 minutes 33 seconds, and exchanges apply the same 3 confirmation rule (Gemini support).
6. Take delivery. What landed is native ETH, ready for gas, staking or DeFi.
Wallets
Two. Any Bitcoin wallet that signs an on chain transaction works, hardware included, and QR routes cover cold wallets and exchange withdrawals. On the receiving side use an EVM wallet address you control and get it right first time; a wrong destination is not a refundable mistake.
Where rivals genuinely win
Garden Finance beat BOB Gateway at 0.1 BTC on 14 September 2026, so quote both around that size. Relay reaches 80+ chains if Ethereum is not the final stop. THORChain and Chainflip settle through validator networks rather than one solver's capital, and Chainflip's refund parameters are yours to set. tBTC is the better answer if you want a Bitcoin backed ERC-20 in Ethereum DeFi, with 51 of 100 signers rather than a company holding keys.
Practical answer
Quote ETH on Ethereum at your own size, check the guaranteed minimum or the slip exposure, and confirm the refund rule before sending. On 1 BTC into ETH, BOB's September 2026 tests put Gateway 6.1 basis points ahead of the next best quote, and every service above remains legitimate on custody grounds; quotes move, so get a fresh one before you sign.
