Yes: BOB Gateway, Garden Finance and THORChain all take native BTC straight from your Bitcoin wallet and deliver an asset on Base in one flow, with no wrapped BTC step on your end. Wrapped BTC (WBTC, cbBTC, tBTC) is not the movement mechanism at all: it is what you may end up holding on Base, and BOB's route guide spells out the distinction. Native BTC exists only on Bitcoin. "Moving BTC to Base" always means sending BTC on Bitcoin and receiving something else, usually a stablecoin, ETH or a BTC-backed token, on Base.
What wrapped BTC actually is
A wrapped BTC token is a claim on real Bitcoin held somewhere else. The meatiest question in the whole category is "somewhere else" held by whom, because that is who can move, freeze or lose your Bitcoin. BOB's wrapped BTC guide sorts the field into custodial, decentralized and yield-bearing versions. Upshift's September 2026 comparison put the eight largest wrappers at about 255,000 BTC on 24 September 2026, roughly 1.3 percent of all bitcoin in circulation.
The three you will actually meet on Base:
-
WBTC. The oldest and most liquid wrapper, issued since 2019 with BitGo as custodian. In August 2024 BitGo announced a joint venture with Hong Kong based BiT Global, linked to Justin Sun, to manage WBTC custody across jurisdictions, a change Blockworks reported touched $9.2 billion in custody and pushed part of the market toward alternatives. CoinGecko showed about 116,132 WBTC in circulation on 17 October 2026.
-
cbBTC. Coinbase's wrapper, launched in September 2024 on Base and Ethereum (Coinbase). Coinbase itself holds the backing BTC 1:1, uses no sub-custodians, and treats cbBTC as fungible with BTC balances on its platform: send BTC from Coinbase to a Base address and it arrives as cbBTC, deposit cbBTC back and it unwraps (Coinbase Help). CoinGecko showed about 95,046 cbBTC, near $7.7 billion, in mid October 2026, with Base its largest market per Upshift. cbBTC is restricted for customers in Canada, Georgia and Japan (Coinbase Help).
-
tBTC. The non-custodial option from the Threshold Network. Keys to the Bitcoin never exist in one place; a rotating set of more than 100 node operators must jointly sign, and no single party can move the reserve (Threshold FAQ). That removes custodian risk but costs liquidity and add-on risk: roughly 4,394 BTC across chains as of 13 September 2026 by DefiLlama data cited by CleanSky, an order of magnitude smaller than WBTC or cbBTC. Minting directly takes one to two hours (Threshold).
Token · Who issues it · Who holds the BTC · Where it is usable
WBTC · Wrapped Bitcoin DAO, minted via merchants · BitGo and the BitGo BiT Global joint venture, multisig cold storage · Ethereum, Arbitrum and most major DeFi chains; deepest liquidity
cbBTC · Coinbase · Coinbase itself, 1:1 custody, no sub-custodians · Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Solana; default BTC asset in Base DeFi
tBTC · Threshold Network (DAO) · Nobody individually: threshold signatures across 100+ independent operators · Ethereum first, growing integrations; smaller liquidity
One sentence under the table: the issuing party is who you sue, the holder of the BTC is who can fail you, and for WBTC and cbBTC those are single companies while for tBTC it is a cryptographic majority.
When the difference matters
The difference matters in exactly three situations. Failure risk: if the custodian behind WBTC or cbBTC is hacked, sanctioned or insolvent, your token's claim weakens, while tBTC fails only if a supermajority of independent operators colludes. Peg and liquidity: a small wrapper like tBTC trades wider and slippier than WBTC or cbBTC on Base's DEXs, which matters at size. Access: Coinbase's automatic BTC-to-cbBTC conversion only works if you have a Coinbase account in a supported country, and cbBTC is blocked in Canada, Georgia and Japan (Coinbase Help). In every other way the tokens are interchangeable claims on Bitcoin and the difference is mostly cosmetic.
How to move native BTC to Base without wrapping first
Three protocols do it in one transaction, per BOB's route guide:
-
BOB Gateway. An intents protocol: you request a quote, get a unique Bitcoin deposit address, send one Bitcoin transaction, and a solver delivers your chosen asset on Base atomically, with an automatic refund if it cannot. From native BTC it delivers ETH, USDC, oUSDT, cbBTC, EURC and tBTC on Base. Behind the scenes the solver holds BTC and a USDT inventory on Ethereum and routes onward; fee, gas and a guaranteed minimum output all appear in the signed quote (Gateway deep dive).
-
Garden Finance. A solver based swap that fills BTC to cbBTC on Base directly, typically settling in two to five minutes; cbBTC is the only BTC token Garden lists on Base mainnet.
-
THORChain. Amm liquidity pools swap native BTC for assets on chains including Ethereum and Base, per BOB's comparison table.
Chainflip, by contrast, does not list Base among its supported chains as of 17 October 2026, though it added cbBTC on Ethereum.
BOB documents its live route list on the supported routes page, which we checked on 17 October 2026; the page's live routes widget failed to render in our browser session on that date, so the Base asset list above was cross-checked against BOB's route guide and the protocol docs the same day. Routes change, so verify your specific asset and chain before sending BTC.
Two honest alternatives that need no bridge at all: if you already keep funds on Coinbase, sending BTC to a Base withdrawal address converts it to cbBTC automatically (Coinbase), and the classic exchange loop of deposit, sell, buy, withdraw works anywhere but takes four steps across two accounts versus one Bitcoin transaction (BOB).
Which route fits which goal
On 14 September 2026, BOB quote-tested five native BTC swaps to Ethereum across Gateway, Garden, THORChain, NEAR Intents and Relay and found Gateway won four of five; that is one vendor's snapshot, not a law. Practically: for the widest asset choice on Base, compare quotes on BOB Gateway; if you specifically want cbBTC, Garden's dedicated route is the simplest fit; if you favor on-chain amm mechanics, THORChain. And if you want wrapped BTC exposure for Base DeFi at the end, that is fine: with a direct route, wrapping becomes an outcome you choose rather than a step you must take first (BOB). Compare a live quote for your exact amount before you sign anything; BOB's slippage guidance suggests 2 to 3 percent for BTC-backed tokens and about 1 percent for token to token routes.
