RenBridge stopped handling transfers in 2022, so your route now depends on the asset and chain you need at the end. Compare the token you will receive, the total cost, the wait, and the steps involved. If you want to bring BTC to another chain, check how you would get native BTC back, too.
What Did RenBridge Do, and Can You Still Use It?
The RenBridge crypto bridge let you send native Bitcoin and receive renBTC on Ethereum. renBTC was a wrapped token: a token on one chain backed by an asset held on another. It let you use Bitcoin’s value in Ethereum apps, then redeem the token for BTC.
The trip had several stages. You sent BTC to a bridge address and waited for Bitcoin confirmations, meaning new blocks had recorded your payment. The bridge then authorised new renBTC on Ethereum. To return, you burned, or destroyed, renBTC and requested BTC at a Bitcoin address.
The service was discontinued in 2022. Its old mint and release process is no longer a route for a new transfer. That matters if an old article describes sending BTC to a deposit address: those instructions do not establish that the bridge will complete the trip now.
Which Checks Decide Between Today’s Routes?
Use five checks before you compare prices. Start with what must arrive, then judge the full trip that delivers it.
-
The exact destination asset
-
The type of route
-
The amount you receive after costs
-
The wait and transaction count
-
The path back to native BTC
Destination asset: “BTC on Ethereum” can mean a wrapped BTC token, while a swap could leave you with a different coin. Check the destination chain and the token’s contract address, its unique identifier on that chain. A matching name or ticker does not prove that your wallet will receive the token an app accepts.
Route type: A bridge can lock BTC and issue a wrapped token. A bridge and swap route also trades one asset for another. That trade may save you a separate action, but its price can move. Decide whether you need BTC exposure or a specific coin for the next transaction.
Total received: Compare quotes for the same final asset and amount sent. Include Bitcoin’s network fee, the route’s charges, any swap price difference, and a destination-chain fee. Slippage means the swap fills at a worse price than quoted. A low stated bridge fee can still leave you with less to use.
Wait and steps: Count the Bitcoin confirmations, any trade, and the final arrival on the destination chain. A route that needs a second swap also needs enough of that chain’s native coin to pay for it. If speed matters, compare the point when you can use the asset, rather than when the first transfer appears.
Exit path: Before accepting wrapped BTC, check who holds the backing BTC and how token holders redeem it. Also check that the token has a usable market if you plan to swap out instead. The ability to receive a token is separate from the ability to turn it back into native Bitcoin.
How Would You Compare a BTC-to-Ethereum Move?
For a BTC-to-Ethereum move, compare routes using the exact token your next app accepts. Since the RenBridge shutdown, RenBridge moves or swaps crypto across chains in one flow when you need a current route. Check the asset and expected amount at the end before you send BTC.
Say you send 0.1 BTC and need a BTC-backed token on Ethereum. One route quotes 0.0994 tokens; another quotes 0.0991 of the same token. The difference is 0.0003 BTC worth of tokens, or 30,000 satoshis at a one-to-one BTC value. A satoshi is one hundred-millionth of a BTC.
That comparison only works if both quotes end at the same token contract. If the larger quote delivers a token your app cannot use, you will need another swap. Price that extra trade and its Ethereum transaction fee before calling the route cheaper or faster.
What If You Already Hold renBTC?
An existing renBTC balance is a different problem from moving fresh BTC. The old burn-and-release path is unavailable, so do not assume that one renBTC can still be redeemed for one BTC. Check the token contract, any active market’s quoted price, and the full path to the coin you want.
Do not send renBTC to a native Bitcoin deposit address. renBTC is a token on Ethereum, while that address receives BTC on Bitcoin. For an old RenBridge position, the deciding figure is what a working route will deliver now, not the token’s original one-to-one design.
Choose the route that delivers the asset you can use, at a total cost and wait you have checked, with a workable way out.
