How Should Teams Use cowswap for Treasury Swaps?

Use cowswap when your team needs to convert tokens on one chain and can allow time for an order to find an acceptable price. For recurring conversions, cowswap lets signers authorize an order while competing solvers seek a fill. Set the minimum amount received before signing; that is the price floor the trade must meet.

What Is cowswap, and How Does a Swap Settle?

It is a decentralized trading interface for submitting orders to CoW Protocol. Instead of sending a swap directly to a liquidity pool, your wallet signs an order stating what you will sell, what you want to receive, and the worst exchange rate you accept. The order enters an off-chain order book; your sell tokens remain in your wallet until a successful settlement pulls them.

Orders are grouped into batch auctions. Solvers compete to fill them, first looking for a Coincidence of Wants: opposing orders that can trade with each other. They can also use on-chain liquidity. The winning solution settles on-chain, where the contract checks your signed price limit before moving tokens. This design reduces exposure to transaction-ordering attacks, including sandwich attacks, but it does not remove market price changes while your order waits.

The distinction matters for a treasury: a signed order is permission to trade under stated conditions, not a completed conversion. Record the order as pending until the settlement transaction confirms and the receiving wallet shows the bought token.

How Should a Team Place and Check an Order?

Start with the funding wallet, chain, sell token, buy token, and amount. Use a standard swap when the conversion should happen soon at or above a minimum return; use a limit order when a specific price matters more than timing. For a large recurring conversion, a time-weighted average price (TWAP) order divides the sale into scheduled parts, each with price protection. Each part still depends on a fill, so the schedule is not a promise of proceeds by a deadline.

Consider a team that needs DAI for next week’s payouts and holds 100,000 USDC on the same chain. If its budget requires at least 99,500 DAI, it should review the quoted net receipt and set a minimum no lower than 99,500 DAI. A quote above that floor is useful, but the team should fund payouts only from DAI that has actually settled. A tighter floor protects the budget and also makes an unfilled order more likely.

Before signing, check the token contract addresses, chain, quoted net amount, expiry, and receiver address. A first trade may require an on-chain token approval, which costs gas; subsequent signed ERC-20 orders can usually be submitted without paying gas upfront. A multisig adds its own approval time. If the team sells native ETH, wrapping it or using the native-token flow requires an on-chain transaction and upfront gas.

Keep conversion and distribution in separate records. A swap can deliver proceeds to its specified receiver, but it does not by itself execute a payroll or supplier payment run. After settlement, reconcile the received amount, then make transfers under the team’s normal address checks and signing policy. This also prevents an optimistic quote from being treated as cash available for payouts.

How Much Does CoW Swap Charge?

There is no single percentage that gives the full cost of every trade. A solver pays the settlement transaction’s network gas and accounts for execution costs in the trade; protocol fees may also apply. The amount you receive reflects those costs alongside the available market price and price impact. “Gasless order” means you generally do not pay gas to submit the signed order, not that execution has no cost.

Compare net receipts for the same amount, tokens, chain, and time, rather than comparing a fee label alone. For example, if 100,000 USDC has a reference value of 100,000 DAI and the executable quote returns 99,850 DAI, the 150 DAI gap is an illustrative 0.15% all-in difference from that reference. It is not necessarily a 150 DAI protocol fee: market spread and price impact can account for part of it.

Placing a limit order has no upfront protocol charge, but execution must still cover network costs, so the market may have to move beyond your stated limit before it fills. An approval, native-token transaction, or on-chain cancellation is a separate gas-paying action. Review those costs when deciding whether frequent small conversions are economical.

How Long Does a CoW Swap Trade Take?

A straightforward swap often takes a few minutes from signing to on-chain execution, but batch auctions and block inclusion make the exact time variable. Thin liquidity, a strict price floor, or changing network conditions can leave an order pending until it expires. A limit order may wait much longer, and a TWAP runs over the period your team chooses.

Track the order status and settlement transaction before releasing dependent payments. An off-chain cancellation is free, but it is not instantaneous: an order can settle while the cancellation request is being processed. If a payout has a firm cut-off, allow time for the swap, required chain confirmations, multisig signatures, and the separate transfer.

Before placing the order, ask: what is the minimum net amount we need, and how long can we wait to receive it?
