Three hours ago, I hung up the phone with a litigation funder and heard something I'll never forget: "We don't fund this type of civil rights case."

What kind of case? Mine. Let me translate that for you: 326 days of state-sanctioned, manufactured homelessness, toxic mold poisoning due to uninhabitable housing conditions, institutional obstruction of justice, denial of due process for a retaliatory illegal lockout by negligent landlord—none of that is violent enough.

But here's the thing. A police beating? Violent. A shooting caught on camera? Violent. Chronic deprivation of shelter by the same government charged with protecting you? That's not considered violent. That's "too complex." That's "not our category."

That's not a funding criteria. That's carceral logic. That's white supremacist risk math.

Quick sociological explanation:

Carceral logic means the system only recognizes harm it can punish with incarceration—everything else (structural violence, institutional abandonment, policy-driven displacement) becomes invisible.

White supremacist risk math means Black and Brown people's trauma has to be more 'dramatic' to be believed, while white people's claims are taken at face value.

The Pattern

This isn't new. This is how the system has always worked.

CalVCB (California Victim Compensation Board) told me the same thing in February 2025: "We don't cover nonviolent crimes." Never mind that nowhere in their literature or statutory law says violence is a requirement for them to fund a crime victim.

Never mind that they pay out $3.5 million annually for burglary, property theft, and other crimes classified as PC 487—the same felony crime documented on our police report.

Never mind that they're sitting on an end-of-year $46.7 million surplus while denying 96% of victims any help.

Never mind that their narrow definition of violence protects the system that causes harm to me and millions of other victims of systemic violence.

Mutual aid organizations told me something similar: They fund people whose trauma fits the aesthetic. House burned down? Yes. Cancer diagnosis? Yes. But, chronic displacement by systemic abandonment? That's "too complicated." That's "not our focus area." What they mean: "Your trauma doesn't fit the narrative that makes donors feel good about themselves."

This is the carceral state's greatest trick: Define violence so narrowly that only acute, visible, individual harm counts. Everything else becomes "administrative." Everything else becomes invisible.

Structural violence? Institutional abandonment? 14th Amendment violations through denial of due process? All of that disappears into the category of "not violent enough."

Why This Matters (Beyond My Case)

This isn't about one person's homelessness. This is about who gets funded when the system fails them.

If your harm doesn't come from a single "bad actor" (a cop, a landlord, a burglar), if it comes from systems refusing to enforce their own laws, you're out of luck. TradFi won't touch it. Traditional mutual aid won't touch it. The victim compensation board won't touch it.

Meanwhile, the people responsible for that systemic harm—CalVCB, Kern County Sheriff's Office + District Attorney's office, the Attorney General—they keep operating. No consequences. No accountability. Just a narrow definition of "violence" that protects everyone except the victims.

These policies and lack of enforcement are manufacturing homelessness. This is what is manufacturing displacement for people who have the documentation, the evidence, and the legal standing to win. The housing crisis is not a mystery and it's not by accident—it's by design. This same lack of enforcement—the same denial of due process—is what allows systemic violence from the proliferation of the manufactured homelessness crisis to ICE detentions of legal citizens to go unchallenged. When the system refuses to enforce its own laws, everyone becomes vulnerable.

What I Built Instead

I got tired of waiting for permission from systems that benefit from my silence.

Current Status: December 3, 2025

What began as a straightforward housing code violation in January 2025 has evolved into a 330-day constitutional challenge documenting systematic institutional failure across multiple government agencies. We are currently in temporary sanctuary in Canada while we continue to actively litigate our federal civil rights case pro se—filing objections, responding to court orders, and building the legal record. We left the United States because we were drowning financially under displacement costs and feared for our safety while suing government institutions. This article explains how a clear-cut legal violation became a 330-day constitutional crisis.

This is not a story about individual hardship. This is a case study in California's manufactured displacement crisis - what happens when institutions choose not to enforce the laws they're charged with upholding, creating homelessness even for high-earning professionals. This is black letter law territory: clear violations that should have been resolved through summary judgment in days or weeks, not 326+ days of institutional obstruction.

THE PROBLEM ISN'T TOO MANY REGULATIONS - IT'S NOT ENFORCING THE REGULATIONS WE ALREADY HAVE

What Happened:

• Landlord ignored dangerous mold/leak for 7+ months, making tenants severely ill

• Tenant legally withheld rent under California law due to uninhabitable conditions

• Landlord retaliated by illegally locking tenants out (classic self-help eviction)

• Landlord kept property valued over $950, triggering CA PC §487 (grand theft) in addition to PC §418 (illegal lockout)

• Multiple felonies committed from day one - not a civil dispute

• CA Civil Code §789.3 provides statutory damages of $100+ per day (minimum $250/day) for illegal lockouts

• This violates both California criminal law (PC §418) and civil law (CC §789.3)

What Should Have Happened (According to Black Letter Law):

This is summary judgment territory - so clear-cut it doesn't even require a trial:

• Sheriff examines lease and rental receipts (documentary evidence)

• Sheriff checks court records - no filed unlawful detainer = illegal lockout under PC §418

• Sheriff enforces the law: "You broke the law, let them back in immediately"

• Landlord pays statutory and compensatory damages: back rent + moving costs, physical damages + penalties (~$20,000-30,000)

• Case resolved in 2 weeks maximum

This is not up for interpretation. California Penal Code §418 is black letter law as interpreted by its own Attorney General Bonta in his 2022-DLE-05 Bulletin to law enforcement. It clearly states that landlords cannot lock out tenants without court process. When no unlawful detainer is filed, the lockout is per se illegal. This requires summary judgment, not investigation.

What Actually Happened to Us in January 2025:

• Landlord removed locks while we were temporarily evacuated, as advised by our doctors, due to pnemonia caused by mycotoxin poisoning from mold in the rental property

• Sheriff never examined lease or rental receipts (ignored documentary evidence that we offered to share at the scene of the crime)

• Sheriff called landlord to "confirm" if an illegal lockout occurred (asking the accused if they committed a crime)

• Turned black letter law violation into subjective "he said/she said" dispute when removal of locks and absence of unlawful detainer filed in court is the only documentary evidence required to prove the crime was committed

• 326+ days later, victims still displaced despite $20K+/month earning capacity before lockout

• Federal civil rights lawsuit now required to address state and federal institutions' choice not to enforce law

The Result: California's manufactured displacement crisis in action - institutions choosing not to enforce existing laws, creating homelessness even for people who have documented high earning capacity. This isn't about people who can't afford housing. This is about institutions refusing to protect property rights guaranteed by law.

THE MATH: COST OF NOT ENFORCING THE LAW

If Law Had Been Followed:

• Cost to Taxpayers: $0 (landlord pays damages under CA law)

• Time: days/weeks to resolution

• Victims: Restored to housing, minimal trauma

• Legal Standard: Summary judgment for clear PC-418 violation (no court filing = illegal lockout)

• System Impact: Law respected, future compliance encouraged

Because Law Wasn't Enforced:

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EVERYONE (NOT JUST TENANTS)

Tenant Rights = Universal Rule of Law

Every country with functioning rule of law has tenant protection laws. This isn't "California liberal politics" - this is basic property rights that exist globally because without them, displacement becomes rampant when landlords can act unilaterally without court process.

When we shared our story in Canada, people were horrified. The universal response: "Wait, how was that allowed?" Because in functioning legal systems, it shouldn't be.

Whether you agree with specific tenant protections or not, the law currently requires court process before removing tenants. Don't like it? Campaign to change the law. But until then, it's the law - and institutions chose not to enforce it.

For Good Landlords:

• Good landlords have nothing to fear - follow the law, no problems

• Smart landlords WANT tenants to report problems (which is what we did) - fixing leaks immediately prevents mold, which insurance often won't cover if you let it spread

• Bad landlords hurt everyone - when they ignore health hazards, they create expensive problems and hurt property values

• When sheriffs don't enforce housing law, it hurts good landlords who follow rules and maintain their properties

For Taxpayers:

• Your money is being wasted on agencies that don't do their jobs

• $46.7 million in CalVCB victim services funds sitting unused while taxpayers think it's being spent

• Police/court resources wasted on cases that should take days or weeks at most

For the Legal System:

• Laws only work if they're enforced consistently and fairly

• When agencies pick and choose what to enforce, the system breaks down

• Rich or poor, everyone should face the same consequences for breaking the law

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE (ENFORCEMENT, NOT NEW LAWS)

Simple Fixes That Don't Require New Legislation:

1. Sheriffs must look at documentation before making housing decisions

   • If no court-filed unlawful detainer exists, lockout is illegal - PERIOD

   • Don't call landlord to "confirm" if they broke the law - check court records

2. CalVCB must follow their own eligibility rules

   • Stop lying to victims about coverage

   • Use the $46.7 million surplus to actually help victims so they don't have to beg for help from their communities and suffer financially while financially recovering from crimes

   • Publish real participation rates, not just "applications processed"

3. AG's office must enforce their own bulletins

   • Don't just publish guidance, ensure compliance

   • Track whether local agencies follow state directives

   • Create consequences for ignoring published standards

4. Measure Real Outcomes:

   • Track enforcement rates - publish data on how often laws are actually enforced

   • Measure real outcomes - not just "processes completed" but "problems solved"

   • Hold agencies accountable for contradicting their own policies

THE BIGGER QUESTION

This isn't about individual hardship or one displaced couple.

This is about California's manufactured displacement crisis - what happens when institutions systematically choose not to enforce black letter law, creating homelessness even for high-earning professionals who can prove their capacity.

This is about whether laws mean anything if agencies can ignore clear violations without consequences.

This is about whether $46.7 million in California's victim services actually serves victims or just feeds bureaucracy.

This is about whether "law and order" applies to institutions or just individuals.

When the law is this clear - when it's summary judgment territory requiring no trial - and institutions still refuse to enforce it, that's not a gray area. That's a choice. And that choice manufactures the very real homeless crisis for which California claims to not know how to solve.

Questions Voters Should Ask:

• "Why is CalVCB hoarding $46.7 million while denying victims?"

• "Why don't sheriffs look at lease documents in housing disputes?"

• "What's the point of AG bulletins if nobody enforces them?"

Data We Need:

• How many housing disputes are resolved in days and weeks vs. 200+ days or never?

• What percentage of CalVCB's budget actually reaches victims?

• How often do agencies follow their own published policies?

THE SOLUTION: ACCOUNTABILITY, NOT NEW REGULATIONS

We don't necessarily need more laws. We need:

• Enforcement of existing laws (regulations are not being enforced)

• Transparency in agency performance (not just agency reports)

• Accountability for institutional failures (not just individual mistakes)

When institutions don't follow the law, everyone suffers except the institutions.

When agencies lie about their performance, taxpayers get cheated.

When sheriffs don't look at evidence, justice becomes a coin flip.

THE HUMAN COST

Before the illegal lockout, we were in the process of buying our first home with family support for the down payment - a common path to homeownership. After 326+ days of institutional obstruction, our finances have been completely destroyed and we are homeless—displaced without a permanent home.

If it seems we should have been able to weather this crisis more easily, consider: This wasn't our first experience of being violated by crime. Previous victimization without restitution had already depleted our reserves. When institutions fail to provide restitution for crimes, victims become increasingly vulnerable to subsequent victimization. This illegal lockout didn't happen in a vacuum - it happened to people who had already survived institutional abandonment before and couldn't absorb another hit.

The crime didn't just steal our home and personal property - it derailed multi-generational wealth building. Family resources meant to secure homeownership and rebuild after past victimization due to crimes were instead spent on survival during 326+ days of displacement.

All because agencies chose not to enforce existing law.

That's not a housing problem. That's a law enforcement problem.

We are currently in temporary sanctuary in Canada, continuing to fight this case pro se while rebuilding our capacity from a place of relative safety. We cannot return to the U.S. while actively suing government institutions until we have secured stable housing and legal resolution.

THIS CASE IS ABOUT RULE OF LAW AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS

This case is not about liberal versus conservative ideology. This is about whether institutions follow the law or ignore it when convenient.

If you believe in "law and order" - this case should outrage you. Institutions are ignoring black letter law.

SOLUTION: Make state and federal agencies follow their own rules. Hold them accountable when they don't. That's not radical - that's basic good government.

Last week, that same Dawn Robinson — the woman who helped me believe in my own strength — revealed that she’s been living in her car for nearly three years.

“You guys, for the past three, almost three years, I have been living in my car. I said it! Oh my god, it’s out. I’ve been living in my car.”

For 15 years, I have experienced relentless economic violence — a coordinated, systemic assault on my financial autonomy that many don’t recognize as abuse until it’s too late. Even as I’ve worked with major media companies like Disney and Warner Bros, consulted and collaborated with Fortune 500 clients, and built creative projects that reached millions, I’ve been trapped in an invisible cage of economic warfare.

These aren’t random events. This is a coordinated pattern of foreseeable harm — direct, predictable consequences of systemic failures designed to keep certain people vulnerable and exploitable.

How many Dawn Robinsons have to speak up before we admit this is systemic? How many brilliant, talented people need to end up in their cars before we acknowledge the pattern? This isn’t just my story or Dawn’s story — it’s a designed outcome of a system that isolates its victims, making them believe it’s their personal failure when it’s actually economic violence by design.

The public misunderstands economic violence. When we see someone experiencing homelessness, we default to “bad choices” as the explanation. But the truth is almost always far more insidious.

I’m no stranger to navigating complex bureaucratic systems. During the pandemic, I successfully freed my father from Federal Prison under the CARES Act when less than 4% of eligible elderly incarcerated men were released to protect their health. I guided friends and family through obtaining SBA PPP forgivable loans and EIDL assistance, decoding paperwork mazes that were designed to exclude. I didn’t just help myself — I helped my community thrive despite the pandemic’s financially devastating effects.

Yet today, despite filing complaints with the California Civil Rights Department, HUD, POST, Attorney General Bonta, and the DOJ — with all my experience forcing systemic corrections — I still can’t get justice. This reveals a devastating truth: the system isn’t broken; it’s designed to exploit us. I’ve experienced institutional gaslighting firsthand, watching agencies that established protective laws refuse to enforce them when I needed protection. I’m not saying this to shift responsibility from myself or Dawn. I’m saying this because the horror of being gaslit by the very institutions designed to protect us needs to be named and confronted.

➔ Calling the police for help with a clear criminal case… only to be dismissed, told it’s a “civil matter,” or worse — treated as the problem instead of the victim.

➔ Being denied financial assistance you legally qualify for… because a bureaucratic technicality “invalidates” your claim, while corporations and the wealthy exploit loopholes daily.

➔ Presenting undeniable evidence of fraud, theft, or misconduct… only to be told there’s “no wrongdoing” while the perpetrators walk free and your financial ruin is ignored.

➔ Applying for victim services that claim to provide urgent relief… only to be told you don’t fit the criteria — criteria that mysteriously shifts whenever you meet it.

➔ Trying to fight back using the legal system… but being buried in procedural delays, administrative roadblocks, or lawyers who say they “believe you” but “can’t take the case.”

➔ Watching organizations publicly claim they help people in crisis… while your real-life experience with them proves they do the exact opposite .

Those are just a few examples. That’s what the cause looks like. And here’s what the foreseeable harm — the effects — look like:

• Mental health crises escalate without treatment resources

• Financial stability collapses, creating housing insecurity and homelessness

• Generational wealth-building becomes impossible

• Desperation can force people into criminalized survival activities

• Communities fragment as individual members struggle alone

• Law enforcement often refuses to investigate complex financial crimes, or worse, retaliates against victims who report them. When I reported my illegal lockout due to retaliation for reporting habitability violations under California law, police refused to even view my lease or document my residency, dismissing a clear criminal violation as a “civil dispute.” These aren’t just unethical acts — they’re criminal violations under California law, including Penal Code 418 (illegal lockout), 487 (grand theft of tenant property), and 518 (extortion), among others. And that’s not me just making a judgement call — Attorney General Bonta released a bulletin № 2022-DLE-05 in 2022 with the subject “Protecting Tenants Against Unlawful Lockouts and Other “Self-Help Evictions.” This bulletin explicitly states identifies each of these Penal Codes to be applied to “self-help” evictions whether the tenant is behind on rent or not, let alone our situation where we were made sick by uninhabitable housing conditions.

• The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) sits on billions in unspent funds each year while creating arbitrary barriers to accessing support for economic crime victims — claiming they only support victims of physical violence, despite nowhere stating this limitation on their website or documentation.

• Legal systems make justice prohibitively expensive, ensuring only the wealthy can afford to fight back. The District Attorney’s office has explicitly stated that such cases “could take months to years” despite clear statutory violations.

These aren’t bugs in the system. They’re features designed to protect wealth and power at the expense of those who need protection most.

I was going to build the solution in silence out of fear of my professional reputation being damaged. I thought I could fix my situation privately while developing a system to help others.

For too long, survivors of economic violence have been forced to use broken tools — GoFundMe’s that require us to prove our pain, donation links that expose our legal strategy, and fundraising methods that move too slowly for disaster-level urgency.

DLF is a community-powered legal funding system that gives victims of economic disaster the resources to fight back. It is the first active initiative under the Economic Liberation Fund — a decentralized financial engine designed to operationalize justice at scale, not just survive injustice. The DLF is the first litigation funding model built by and for survivors of economic violence, turning legal battles into a pathway for collective power and systemic correction.

This is a chicken and egg problem. In order for web3 technologies to become mainstream, we need more people using them. But in order for more people to start using web3 technologies, they need to be more user-friendly and accessible.

That is why when I chose to release my first NFT access pass, I jumped onboard with the402, a web3 platform that is innovating on smart contracts and collaborating with artists to implement user-friendly web3 solutions for the music industry. After seeing my friend, Mike Bass, successfully release his live-stream music performance on their platform, I wanted to try it out for myself.

I got on a call with the402's co-founder and developer, Ravi Bakhai, to plan my release. He asked me what sort of customizations I wanted for my live stream NFT access pass. I told him that I wanted the purchase experience of my NFTs to be just as user-friendly and accessible for my web2 audience as it is for web3 early adopters.

The402 team was able to quickly develop a solution that addressed both of these concerns. I mentioned Crossmint as a possible credit card payment gateway for web2 users to purchase my NFT access pass and they ran with it!

Crossmint is a secure, web3 wallet that non-crypto, web2 users can easily create without having to go through the hassle of buying crypto. Crossmint is partnering with many companies and projects in web3, such as Burble, a web3 entertainment and media company for which I serve as their director of community.

The402 team was able to easily integrate Crossmint into their platform so web2 users can buy my NFT access pass with a credit card and receive it directly in their Crossmint wallet.

This means that web2 listeners can use their credit cards to purchase their NFT access passes without having to create a decentralized wallet, like Metamask. Once users purchase their NFT access pass, they are automatically emailed a link to access their NFT and use it to gain access to my live stream performance on August 30, 2022.

This is a huge development for web3 because it means that we can now start to get web2 users to adopt web3 technologies without having to sacrifice ease of use and familiarity. Plus, users still have the option to transfer their NFTs that are stored on Crossmint's custodial wallet to a decentralized wallet if they decide to create one in the future.

The402 also created an easy-to-use web3 player for their live stream concert platform that makes the experience convenient for web3 and web2 users alike to watch and listen without having to download any new software or plugins. They're also constantly building new tools to optimize interaction by adding unique features that aren't possible in web2.

I'm a firm believer that in order for the world to adopt blockchain technologies, we must allow users to interact with the technology in a way that is familiar and convenient for them. The402 and Crossmint have taken web3 technologies and made them more accessible for web2 users without compromising the decentralization of the platform. Some people want to own a decentralized wallet because they believe in the philosophy of web3. But others just want to use the technology because it's more convenient. And that's okay!

The contract has an ascending model that the402 calls a bonding curve. "The core concept of a bonding curve is that the price of an NFT is determined by its supply. The more NFTs that have been distributed, the higher the price. The fewer NFTs, the lower the price."

In other words, the price of my NFT access pass will go up as more people purchase it. And since the NFT is stored on the Ethereum blockchain, it's a completely trustless system. This means that I don't have to worry about someone reverse engineering my contract or manipulating the price. It's all done through code and it's completely transparent.

The contract was an important consideration for me because I have been discussing this type of contract structure in a weekly "Collectors and Musicians in The Round" Twitter Space that I co-host with my friend and musician Joe Rian. In this space, we workshop NFT collection ideas with musicians asking NFT collectors for feedback. We were brainstorming in this space and came up with an auction idea for NFTs that is very similar to a bonding curve structure. We playfully nicknamed it the "Reverse Dutch."

The idea was that raising the price of an NFT after each sale would encourage collectors to buy sooner rather than later since the cost would only rise. There are all kinds of possibilities with this sort of structure like creating giveaways at certain price points or adding additional content as the price goes up.

And since a bonding curve allows for the NFT price to be determined by supply and demand, I don't have to worry about how to price my NFT. The market will do it for me.

I don't have any planned contests as part of this release, but I am doing giveaways as projects pop up that I want to support, like my friend Joe Rian who is giving away one of my NFTs as a prize to those who signup for the whitelist of his next drop.

I'm definitely planning to experiment more with utility for my NFTs in the future, but for this first drop, I wanted to underpromise and overdeliver. I'm focusing on producing a really high-quality live stream performance with the help of my partnerships with IK Multimedia, Avid (Pro Tools), Logitech, and Blackmagic. I'm excited to be using Blackmagic's ATEM Mini Pro for the first time to stream with two cameras - their Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k + a Sony A6600. I'll be routing and mixing my live sound through Pro Tools and using equipment from IK Multimedia and Blue Microphone as well. My goal is to make the performance feel intimate. Being an audio engineer myself, I'm focused on delivering the best sound and video quality that I can.

As for the actual performance, I'll be playing some of my older music, unreleased tracks plus a few new songs that have never been publicly performed or released. And also I'm planning to do a Q&A at the end where I'll be taking questions from those who have purchased my NFT access pass and I'll be asking them what kind of utilities they would like to see come from this first NFT release in the future. I think one of the best ways to build and create NFT experiences is to ask for feedback from your audience so you can shape the experience together.

I'm really happy about my decision to release my first music NFT as an access pass on the402's platform. I'm all about exploring what the future of web3 holds and I'm honored to be part of this experiment in tokenizing music. I believe that we are on the cusp of a new era in music where artists will have more control over their careers and will be able to connect with their fans in more meaningful ways. The possibilities are endless.
