Crypto 101 e38 explored a different way to think about proximity: two people can cross paths without automatically creating a location history, a searchable social graph, or a profile for a platform to monetize.
But privacy alone is not the end goal.
The point of protecting an encounter is to give it a chance to become something meaningful on the people's own terms. A conversation. A collaboration. A friendship. A message that begins because two people independently decided that the connection was worth exploring.
That is where Path comes in.
A private encounter should be able to become a real connection, but only when both people choose it.
Most social and dating apps begin with a profile. Users upload photos, write a bio, select interests, and enter a feed where an algorithm decides who should see them and who they should see.
The platform then learns from every action: who a person paused on, who they ignored, who they messaged, where they were, what time they opened the app, and what kind of person keeps their attention longest. That model treats connection as content. It can be useful for discovery, but it also turns the search for people into another data-extraction loop, where the platform sees the social graph, holds the context, ranks the options, and often has more insight into a person's relationship patterns than the person does.
Path starts from a different place: an encounter in the real world, not a profile in a feed.
The best connection may not be someone an algorithm put in front of you. It may be someone already moving through your world.
Path is a private way to discover people someone recently crossed paths with. The Nodle app describes the model simply: create a bio stored on the device, discover people nearby without broadcasting identity, share that bio only when both people agree, then open a private messaging channel once the connection is mutual, all built on Nodle Whisper Connect, the company's privacy-first proximity technology.
The important detail is what happens before a connection exists. A phone can remember that it was near another participating device, but it does not need to know who that person is. Their identity is not broadcast into the room. Their profile is not placed in a public feed. Their presence does not become a public check-in. The encounter stays local and private until both people opt in.
Your phone can remember a moment without turning that moment into a dossier.

A Bluetooth signal alone should never create a social connection. Being physically near someone is not consent to be discovered, contacted, or profiled. That is why mutual opt-in is the heart of the model: a person chooses to participate, a second person chooses to participate, and only when both independently agree does the system reveal that a possible connection exists.
The order matters:
A private encounter occurs.
Both devices retain only the minimum signal needed to recognize a shared encounter.
Each person independently opts in.
A mutual match is confirmed.
A private messaging channel opens only if both choose it.
No unilateral follow. No public exposure. No searchable list of everyone nearby.
A connection should require two yeses, not one broadcast.

A Path bio should not become another permanent profile that follows a person across the internet. Its role is narrower: it gives someone enough context to decide whether a conversation feels welcome. That could be a first name or pseudonym, a few interests, a current project, a language, or a short intention such as being open to meeting other founders, looking for a running partner, or happy to talk about local art. It does not need to include a real-time location, legal identity, contact list, employment history, or a decade of posts.
This builds on the public and private boundary explored in Crypto 101 e37. An ENS name, avatar, website, or selected social handle can be public by choice, while the rest of someone's identity does not need to be available simply because they entered a room. ENS text records are designed for public profile information, while a Path-style bio can remain local and only be shared through explicit mutual consent.
A profile should tell people how to meet you, not give them everything they could ever know about you.

Once two people agree to connect, the conversation needs the same privacy standard as the encounter that created it. This is where decentralized messaging matters. In Crypto 101 e33, this series explored why end-to-end encryption protects message content, while decentralized infrastructure reduces dependence on a single company that can control, monetize, or become a central point of failure for communication.

Path applies a people-first version of the same philosophy. This is an important distinction: the goal is not to make every real-world interaction legible to a network, but to let users create a private signal that they can later choose to turn into a connection.
The Trust Network verifies an event. Path gives people control over whether that event ever becomes social. Verification can create opportunity. Consent decides whether opportunity becomes connection.
Imagine two people who work from the same neighborhood café several times a week. Neither knows the other's name. Neither wants to be added to a public local feed, and neither wants their daily routine turned into ad-targeting data.
Both opt into Path. Their devices privately recognize that their paths have crossed more than once. Nothing happens by default. One person decides they are open to meeting others working in climate technology. The other has chosen a similar interest. Only if both separately choose to connect does a match appear. Each can see a small bio, and each can decide whether to begin an encrypted chat.
The technology does not claim to know who should meet. It simply preserves the possibility that people can decide for themselves.
Serendipity works best when it is offered, not engineered for someone else's profit.
