我是穿着母亲亲手缝制的布鞋长大的。我母亲做的布鞋，不光穿着舒服，而且好看。洗过晒干拿在手里，还能闻到草木的清香。 冬夜，忙完繁琐家务，圈实了家畜家禽。母亲就坐在小桌前，一针一线地纳鞋底了。她用针穿上白色粗线绳，先用力把针尖刺入鞋底，再借助顶针使力将针穿透鞋底，然后捏紧穿过鞋底的针尖往外拉。实在拉不动时，还得用牙咬住针头，一点一点地往外拔。 有时一觉醒来，我看见母亲还在昏黄的灯光下，弓着身子，双脚搁在火炉上，认真、细致、专注地纳着鞋底，她不时伸手擦一下眼睛，把针在头发上摩挲几下，继续飞针走线，她把纳鞋底的绳扯得很紧，也把生活的无奈辛酸、对丈夫的深情、对孩子的殷殷期盼都融入这力道很重、真实深刻的一针一线里。 一盏煤油灯，不断袭来的瞌睡，也没有影响母亲做鞋的质量。她纳好的鞋底平整、结实，被细小的针脚分成整齐的菱形的格子，母亲把流淌在她血液里的天性和欢欣全部移植在这格子里，于是，那些格子，被赋予不同的内涵，储藏着斑驳的夜晚，星光、月色、犬吠、鸟啼，还有母亲不曾流露的秘密，诸如孩子的前程、家里的生计、他乡的父母…… 鞋底纳好了，母亲便开始制作鞋面，然后将鞋底和鞋面缝合到一起，再用刀把鞋底外...
