The Person We Keep Forgetting
One of the hardest things I’ve realized is how difficult it has been to say hi to me.
If you don’t understand what I mean, let me explain.
Saying hi to me means having a conversation with myself. Checking up on me. Asking myself how I’m doing and actually taking the time to listen to the answer.
We’re always setting notifications for apps, keeping up with updates, and checking on our friends and loved ones.
But when was the last time you checked up on YOU?
I’ve been so caught up in the noise of life , survival, making money, traveling, pursuing a higher degree, and trying to figure things out, that I forgot to pause and listen to myself.
Sometimes, you don’t need much to experience that big breakthrough. Sometimes, what you need is to sit with yourself long enough to hear what you’ve been trying to tell yourself all along.
But we hardly listen.
Think about it. Most of us can barely stay away from our phones. We’re always building, working, watching videos, scrolling through social media, or looking for the next thing to do.
The only time we’re truly unavailable is when we’re asleep.
And honestly, that’s sad.
I realized I could barely spend time with myself without feeling the need to do something. Even when I was alone, I wanted to be occupied.
But somewhere within me, there was a version of myself that had so much to say.
Sometimes, I felt it through my body sickness, fatigue, joint pains, and exhaustion.
It was as though my body was saying:
“Listen to me, man. Take a break. Sit down. Hear me out.”
And for once, I decided to listen.
Learning to Listen to Me
So, what does it mean to listen to me?
For me, it means finally spending time with myself away from all the noise.
It means personal meditation, introspection, and having the courage to face my truths.
It means asking myself difficult questions, acknowledging how I feel, understanding what I want, and being honest about where I am in life.
It means making room to hear my desires, revisit my vision, and reconnect with my ambitions.
Every day, I want to say hi to me.
Not because I have everything figured out, but because I owe myself that much.
I believe we get so caught up in survival mode that we gradually lose our spark and creativity.
We become so focused on making ends meet, chasing opportunities, and trying to become somebody that we forget the person we were before the world became so loud.
We lose sight of our initial drive and ambitions, not necessarily because we’ve stopped caring about them, but because we’ve stopped making time to listen to ourselves.
And sometimes, the answers we desperately seek outside are waiting for us in the quiet moments we keep avoiding.
Staying Connected to Who I Am
Saying hi to me reminds me why I am here on earth.
I Went Back to Me.
It reminds me of what I want to do, the paths I want to walk, and the kind of person I want to become.
It brings me back to my roots.
And even if I’m not where I want to be yet, I know the noise of life won’t make me completely forget who I am.
Why?
Because I’m still making time to reconnect with myself.
I’m still checking in.
I’m still listening.
I’m still saying hi to me.
I’m learning that I don’t have to lose myself while trying to find my place in the world.
I don’t have to abandon my dreams just because survival has become a priority. And I don’t have to wait until I’ve achieved something significant before I give myself permission to pause and breathe.
I am my source.
Everything I need to become the fullest version of myself begins with understanding, nurturing, and being honest with the person I already am.
I cannot afford to become so distracted by the world outside that I lose connection with the world within.
So, my friend, in the middle of all the noise, the pressure, the dreams, and the endless pursuit of becoming more…
Right now, close your eyes, take one deep breath, and ask yourself: “How am I, truly?” 👋🏽
