Tomlinson is credited with "inventing" email as we know it today by introducing the "@" symbol to separate the username from the host computerās name. This allowed users to send messages between different machines on ARPANET, making email a networked service. š§
Tomlinsonās use of the "@" symbol was revolutionary. It worked much like a postal address system, making it clear which user at which machine should receive the message. Internet pioneer Jon Postel, one of the first users of the new system, famously called it a "nice hack." During this period, email systems began offering folders, allowing users to organize their messages. This feature, developed by Larry Roberts, marked a significant improvement in usability. Early systems required users to be connected to the network to read and send emails, but the development of offline readers changed this. In 1988, Steve Dorner developed one of the first successful commercial email systems, Eudora, which became widely used. Around the same time, Pegasus Mail appeared, further enhancing the functionality of email systems.

š¹ Email's Persistent DominanceEven with the rise of messaging platforms and social media, email remains one of the most widely used digital communication tools globally. SMTP, though still in use, has been shown to be vulnerable to forgery and identity spoofing, which has led to ongoing issues with security, including phishing, spam, and email-based attacks. š
As a response, newer protocols like TLS (Transport Layer Security) and SPF (Sender Policy Framework) have been introduced to help secure email transmissions. Nevertheless, emailās longevity and adaptability have solidified it as an indispensable tool for both personal and professional communication.
