In Russia, they decided to develop a new generation of communication – 6G. In order to keep up with other countries – from the USA, China and the EU countries, the development of 6G technologies in our country is already at an initial stage. At the same time, commercial 5G networks in Russia have not yet started working.
There is a possibility that the sanctions imposed by foreign companies may not affect the planned plans, as Skoltech and the Radio Research Institute (FSBI NIIR) are preparing a joint project to develop domestic sixth-generation communication equipment. More than 30 billion rubles can be allocated for research in the field of the new 6G communication standard. The need to develop the sixth generation of communications in Russia is important to start right now in order to keep up with the technological plan. Huawei, Samsung Electronics, Apple, LG and Nokia are already working on 6G, as well as the merger of Facebook, Qualcomm and the American operator AT&T.
"It is by no means premature to start research in the field of 6G, all the leading countries have already started them. If we don't start now, and just follow the course "our operators don't see a place for 5G yet, and even more so for 6G," then we will come to the next generation of communications as well as to the previous ones – in the role of unsuccessfully catching up and buying other people's solutions of the country. Therefore, the strategy "let's do 4G first, and only then ..." is the way to an even more serious technological lag. Skoltech is an international university, and we understand the importance of international cooperation better than anyone. And we are seriously working on cooperation with partners from India and China, just as we have previously successfully built cooperation with Western partners. However, you need to enter into cooperation with something behind your soul, cooperation does not work in one direction. It is in order to create a certain critical mass of their technologies that can be put on the table for international cooperation, and this research program is needed," emphasizes the Rector of Skoltech, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Kuleshov.
It is noted that the equipment for the project can be created by 2025. There is no common standard for this yet, so Russia will probably develop its own. It is still unknown how justified this will be. As one example, we can cite the efforts of India, which spent several years developing its LTE standard, which eventually had to be abandoned. The reason was the refusal of equipment manufacturers to support the Indian version of 5G.
Unlike 5G, 6G will allow communication between the physical and digital world in real time. It is believed that 6G will provide holographic communication (broadcasting, multimedia, telephone), as well as communication with extremely fast response in emergency situations. The data transfer rate will exceed 1 terabit per second. With the introduction of the sixth generation of communication, more augmented reality applications and services with support for VR, AR, MR will appear.
