Imagine posting something that resonates with your community โ a memorable cast, a witty thought, or a piece of art โ and having someone collect it as a unique digital artifact. Not just a like, not just a comment, but a true collectible that lives onchain.
This is exactly what Farcaster is unlocking with its latest feature: Collectibles, a new way for creators to earn and for users to own a piece of platform history.
Collectibles turn casts (posts) into 1-of-1 digital items. If multiple people want to collect the same cast, it triggers an auction where the highest bidder wins. Itโs not just about buying a post; itโs about owning a unique moment and supporting the creator who made it.
Farcasterโs vision is simple:
Direct earnings for creators, without relying on algorithms.
Instant monetization, even for brand-new creators.
Digital ownership, where fans can hold a piece of Farcaster history in their wallets.
The process is designed to be fair and exciting:
When someone collects a cast, a timed auction begins.
If the cast is new (<24 hours old): The auction lasts 24 hours.
If the cast is older: The auction lasts 7 days.
Bidding rules:
The opening bid starts at $1.
Each new bid must be at least $1 or 10% higher than the previous bid (whichever is greater).
Any bid placed in the last 15 minutes extends the auction by 15 minutes.
At the end of the auction:
90% of the winning bid goes to the creator.
10% goes to the protocol.
The winning collectible appears in the bidderโs Collectibles tab, while all other bids are refunded.
While many platforms experiment with tipping or token-based rewards, Farcaster is betting on a new model. Collectibles are more than just money transfers; theyโre unique artifacts that fans can truly own, trade, and cherish.
Can I opt out of collectibles?
Yes, creators can turn off collecting for all their casts.
What if someone wants to collect an old cast?
Auctions for older casts last 7 days and can be started at any time.
What if the cast gets deleted?
If a cast is deleted during an auction, the auction is canceled, and everyone is refunded. If deleted after the auction, the collectible remains valid.
Is everything onchain?
The auction itself is managed offchain (for simplicity), but once complete, the collectible is minted onchain โ meaning the owner can freely transfer it.
With Collectibles, Farcaster is setting a new standard for creator monetization in Web3 social platforms. Instead of relying on fleeting engagement metrics, creators can now directly earn from their community โ while collectors own a verifiable piece of digital history.
This isnโt just about money. Itโs about meaning. Every collected cast tells a story โ of a moment that mattered enough to someone that they wanted to own it forever.
