Farcaster’s collectible auctions bring a new level of engagement and scarcity to the platform. Starting today, the first collectible auctions are going live, with settlement scheduled around noon ET. A key feature of the system is dynamic extension: any new bid within the last 15 minutes automatically adds another 15 minutes to the clock, creating intense, last-second bidding wars.

What’s even better? Winners don’t need to claim their NFTs. Once an auction settles, the cast is automatically minted into the winner’s Farcaster wallet as an ERC721 token. This NFT is fully transferrable, allowing collectors to hold, trade, or display it across other platforms and marketplaces.

At launch, collectible casts will show a placeholder image paired with metadata like the cast text, author, and timestamp. The Farcaster team is currently working on rendering the same polished visual artifacts seen in the app across all wallets and secondary marketplaces. A full “reveal” of the final collectible images is coming soon — adding excitement and anticipation for early buyers.

Farcaster’s marketplace model is designed to empower creators and developers. A small 0.5% creator fee is set on OpenSea, directed to the same wallet that collects protocol fees from auctions. This ensures that both primary sales (auctions) and secondary sales continuously reward the creators and builders fueling the ecosystem.

Farcaster is transforming the humble cast into a lightweight NFT distribution platform. Imagine an artist wanting to auction a digital artwork — instead of using a separate NFT marketplace, they can create a cast (with up to 10,000 characters and 4 image attachments) as a listing page.

A custom contract then enables a unique process: the cast NFT can be burned in exchange for a new NFT, allowing artists to pair their social content with limited-edition artwork or other assets. This approach bridges the gap between storytelling, community engagement, and NFT sales.

One of the most exciting updates is collectible fractionalization, which allows any Farcaster collectible NFT to be split into tradeable ERC20 tokens.

1. After winning a collectible auction, the owner can deposit the NFT into a vault on Base.

2. The NFT is divided into 1,000 to 100,000 tokens, each representing fractional ownership.

3. These ERC20 tokens can be traded on DEXs or integrated into DeFi protocols.
