Climbing trellises and winding through gardens worldwide, the humble morning glory
(Ipomoea violacea and Turbina corymbosa) conceals a powerful secret: its seeds
contain ergine (LSA), a naturally occurring psychedelic compound closely related to
LSD. For centuries, Indigenous cultures across Mesoamerica notably the Aztec and
Zapotec peoples honored these vines as sacred, using them in divination and
spiritual ceremonies under the names ololiuqui or tlitliltzen.
When ingested, LSA induces effects similar to its synthetic cousin, though often
milder and accompanied by more pronounced body load including nausea,
drowsiness, and vasoconstriction. Visual enhancements, introspective insight,
emotional openness, and a dreamy state of consciousness are commonly reported.
Unlike more intense psychedelics, the experience tends to be contemplative rather
than overwhelming, making it a compound sometimes explored by those seeking a
gentler journey.
However, not all morning glory varieties are psychoactive. Commercially sold seeds
are frequently treated with pesticides or fungicides, making them unsafe for
consumption. Even untreated seeds require careful preparation often involving
crushing and cold-water extraction to reduce side effects and improve tolerability.
Despite its accessibility, morning glory demands respect. Its history is deeply
spiritual, not recreational. Traditional use involved ritual context, guidance, and
intentionality a far cry from modern casual experimentation.
This plant serves as a reminder that profound compounds often hide in plain sight,
woven into the familiar fabric of everyday life. It invites curiosity but also caution:
legal does not mean simple, and natural does not mean safe without knowledge and
preparation. In the expanding world of plant teachers, morning glory remains a
beautiful, subtle, and sacred entry point one that connects us to the wisdom of
ancient rituals while asking us to tread thoughtfully into the gardens of the mind.
