Our Bedtime Book Ritual: A Tradition of Comfort and Connection
Every night, as the world outside settles into a hush, our little corner of the universe comes alive with the turning of pages and the sound of familiar stories. For years now, Sheamus and I have shared a nightly tradition that has become one of the most sacred parts of our day reading books together before bedtime.
It started when he was just a little guy, clinging to picture books and loving the rhythm of my voice. Over time, our routine grew with him. These days, we’ve graduated to chapter books and graphic novels, but the heart of the ritual remains the same: connection, calm, and comfort.
There’s something magical about revisiting the same books. We have our favorites stories that have worn their way into our memories. We laugh at the same jokes, pause at the same suspenseful moments, and sometimes even quote lines before they happen. For Sheamus, who is autistic, this predictability is grounding. It brings a sense of peace and structure to the end of his day, gently transitioning him from stimulation to sleep.
Reading together has also opened doors to deeper conversations. A single scene can spark a memory, a question, or even a teachable moment. It’s more than just reading it’s bonding. It’s a shared world we step into together, where he feels safe, heard, and seen.
Our bedtime book ritual may look simple on the outside, but it’s a pillar of our connection. Long after the lights are off, I believe these stories will stay with him not just the ones on the page, but the ones we’ve written together in the quiet moments before sleep.
