I should have be doing more, making the most of this trip. But here I was lying on the couch reading a book for an hour or two.
Oh, I could have been plucking a bucket of blueberries or rowing or doing upper body strength exercises.
Holidaymaxxing and getting a good return on my investment.
Fuck that! I went and had coffee with the cabin owner. He invited me and organised a fishing rod I still had to pick up.
The house looked asleep, but his car was there. I knocked, waited and walked around the building. Nothing. But then the door opened. He greeted me in his boxer shorts. Old people have no shame.
Awkwardly, I followed his invitation and entered the house. I spare you the suspense. We talked for two hours. A harmless old, Dutch man not quick on his feet but with a sharp mind.
"Study whatever you want and also learn a trade you can do with your hands" - advice his dad gave him years ago that still holds true now.
"Set your limit, then go over it" - attitude instilled by his dad to overcome the fate doctor's gave him for being crippled by Polio.
In case you wondered: I did a workout, and collected blueberries with a funny looking blueberry-scooper and tried my luck with fishing and, of course, ended the day with sauna and a little shot of Spanish honey rum. All without pressure to perform.
