From the last week of January through the first week of February, the hub became a temporary home for the Open Source Village — two weeks of coworking, gatherings, and spontaneous collaboration around FOSDEM. We welcomed more than 400 visitors and built a team of nearly 20 volunteers who helped shape a space where meetups, conferences, board game nights, a dedicated kids village, city and nature walks, and daily coworking could live side by side. On Sunday, we opened the doors to families and welcomed children into the village, creating a playful introduction to open source and showing that openness is something that can be experienced at every age.
For two weeks we explored topics ranging from trusted European media platforms and community health to complementary currencies, open and ethical AI, and new ways of funding communities and commons. Open source revealed itself not only as a way of building technology, but as a practice of learning, sharing, and creating together in community. We need software just as much as sociocracy, non violent communication and deep democracy conversation tools.

This first edition was made possible thanks to partners and sponsors who trusted the experiment and helped bring it to life. A heartfelt thank you to Europe MédiaLab (Stars4Media) for hosting such a dynamic hackathon, CHAOSS for a vibrant community day, PostHog for sponsoring the board game night, Altinity for the meetup on Open Lakehouse and AI, Open Collective for weaving international connections, Logos for inviting reflection on local civic engagement, and Vercel for keeping everyone fuelled with delicious coffee.

The Open Source Village reminded us how closely open source resonates with the spirit of the commons. Openness is not only about publishing code — it is about stewardship, shared responsibility, and making knowledge and infrastructure collectively evolvable. For us, it reaffirmed that building (digital) commons means creating spaces where people can contribute, adapt, and care for what emerges together.
The momentum of the Open Source Village continues on March 7 with the National Commons Assembly — a gathering for people building and stewarding commons together. This day brings practitioners, organisers and institutions into conversation around governance, stewardship and sustainable infrastructure for commons, with contributions from speakers across the Belgian commons ecosystem and space for shared reflection and exchange. Collaboration between Commons Lab and Commons Hub.

Feel very welcome to our space and all our events.
Join the community and share this common space with us to work, organize workshops or events. Come say hi at one of our potlucks every Friday 12:30pm and we will give you a tour!

We publish all events on this calendar. As we build our calendar, we always look for balance and connection — between the Tech Lab’s creative use of technology, the Inner Lab’s focus on sharing and belonging, and the Systems Lab’s exploration of new ways of organising a society together. Each space feeds the others, bringing diversity, exchange, and cross-pollination into our shared community.
Our events circle around
🌀INNER LAB: inner development, connection, rituals and intimate workshops
🌎 SYSTEMS LAB: system change, democracy, building a regenerative society & economy
🤖TECH LAB: tech & tooling, coding, software development
