The summer is over, and we return with news that has been quietly cooking for months.
Last May, we held our General Assembly — and with it, voted in a renewed set of statutes, a new board, and a new name for the legal entity, previously called Citizen Spring ASBL. From now on we are simply ... Commons Hub Brussels ASBL. The legal structure of the organisation has been carefully redesigned and rewritten, integrating the principles of sociocracy, steward-governance and commoning. We keep asking: does our legal structure actually reflect who we are? We think the new one does — a little more honestly, a little more bravely :-).
And a general assembly also means, a vote for new board members. Five new brave people, already very active community stewards, stepped up, which means we now have seven board members who will help us navigate our commons experiment. 🌟
To kick off a new year, we have decided to run a crowdfunding campaign to recover from a big hit we took. Our bank account was hacked end of May. We lost nearly all our funds. This has been a serious test of our resilience. After a long summer and some deep reflection we have decided to continue with our commons experiment. The importance of reinventing new economies and accessible community spaces, and the value it brings to our growing community, outweighs any difficulties we have to face.
The support of the local community is strong and heart felt, we want to keep building. We can use your help with that. 🧡

Our front garden, Square de la Putterie, is in desperate need of some love and care. For two years now, we have been cleaning the park on a weekly basis, but we wanted to do more. Members Bruno and Melis took the initiative to start a working group, inviting Bruxelles Environment and other governmental parties, the local police and some neighbours to see what we can do to revive this green spot. We plan on continuing this work, root deeper in our street and build stronger connections with our neighbours.
And on 📆 Sunday 4 October, 11:00 - 18:00, we open our doors as part of the very first Open Commons Dag — a Flanders and Brussels - wide day on which 46 (!) commons initiatives invite visitors to come check out their projects. From shared tool libraries to community land trusts, from energy cooperatives to shared houses: citizens building something together, often under the radar. Come see what that looks like here, in Brussels.
You can walk in and out of the Commons Hub all day, join workshops or the kicker tournament, or enjoy some coffee and cake.
