Social DAOs: A Complete Guide

What is a social DAO?

There are currently no clear criteria for what classifies a DAO as “social.” This type of DAO was mentioned in the Coopahtroopa study as a type of “digital tribe” and a place where “people with similar interests meet.”

Since the crypto metaverse is changing so rapidly today, any definition we create for social DAOs will likely evolve. Developers, entrepreneurs, and crypto media reporters analyze the various projects, tools, and mechanics that are currently popular, and combining their different perspectives is the only way to keep abreast of crypto. We can analyze the various cases mentioned by Coopahtroopa to understand what to expect from a social DAO.

Coopahtroopa refers to social DAOs by grouping projects below, with their token names in parentheses:

  • FVB (FVB)

  • Sowing club (CLUB)

  • Radiculus (RAD)

  • FiatLuxDAO

  • Krause House (KRAUSE)

  • ProsperDAO

  • Highlights

  • Meta Gamma Delta

  • Song Camp

  • DAO cabin (CABIN)

  • Proof of Humanity (UBI)

Friends with Benefits DAO (FWB) is focused on Web3 and the future of culture. It currently has 2,000 members. FWB DAO is based on Discord, where its members collaborate in chats.

Seed Club is a type of DAO community based on accelerator mechanics. In their own words, “it helps creators, communities, and brands launch and grow social tokens and earn a percentage of their tokens in exchange.” The project is supported by The LAO and includes strong crypto professionals among its members, as shown below.

Radicle is building a self-sustaining, community-driven network for collaborative software development. FiatLux DAO distributes UC Berkeley-related NFTs and also works on academic-related projects. Song Camp DAO is a platform that connects songwriters and hosts events called Song Camp.

As for Cabin DAO, it is an organization for real-time (IRL) meetings of the Web3 community. Cabin DAO uses special spaces in New York, San Francisco, and other regions for this purpose.

Another interesting case is Meta Gamma Delta DAO. The goal of this project is to support female founders and help them raise funding for their startups. This DAO is clearly focused on its target group - women who are interested in technology and want to launch their own startup. Meta Gamma Delta DAO provides grants to women who want to start their own startup in the decentralized application space. The organization functions as a community on Discord.

Krause DAO is currently one of the most popular social DAOs. And it’s not surprising, because the goal of the DAO is to make its members owners of an NBA team. I think this is the kind of social initiative that fans of any sports team in the world can support, especially if they have enough money and influence to run the team. We can see a possible vector for sports development in the example of Krause House.

Each of these projects is different, but they have common features. These DAOs bring together people with common ideas and goals related to social or political activities into groups with active communities at the local or national level.

They may be non-profits or have different types of monetization that they provide to their members directly, or DAO members collaborate to make money on their own in Discord groups. But the most striking characteristic of these DAOs is that they have a clear common goal and bring together people with similar social status or interests.
