The furthest reaches of deep space are finally within our grasp at the dawn of the 25th Century. Galactic expansion and mineral resourcing are high on the agenda. For some, this is an adventure beyond their wildest dreams.

For others, it is war.

I’ve always been a big fan of science fiction, space and galactic adventures. “A Long Way From Home” is a new, on-going homage to some of my favourites, from Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey, to Dune, Solaris, Interstellar & Oblivion.

I wanted to go for grand, wide-angle vistas that can capture sprawling details. Scale is an important factor in space settings, and it needed to feel as massive as possible with the larger scenes.

With each of the first 5 pieces, there’s supporting dialog to give some vital information about the subject, helping to build the world and shape the story as it starts to unfold.

1. The Helioclast.

   A deep-space Capital Ship currently stationed a few clicks from Eryndor's 7 moons, all rich in rare minerals and precious metals. This giant vessel is home to a bustling city of miners, engineers and traders, all looking to earn a living in the fringes of the galaxy.

   

2. New Edens.

   When a new planet is designated for habitation, it first must be terraformed. This is a lengthy process that takes decades to complete. Until it can fully sustain life, terraforming crews and prospective inhabitants are stationed in enormous floating ecosystems known as "New Edens".

   

3. The Trading Posts

   Grains, Pulses, Oils, Spices, Minerals, Plasma, Weapons Grade Uranium.. all can be found at the trading markets, if you know who to talk to. Stocks, shares, crypto, grey market organs... business is booming in this intergalactic economy.

   

4. Pipeline

   As part of the planetary mining infrastructure, vast industrial pipelines aid transport of vital gas and oil reserves to central processing plants. Powered by giant ringed electro-coils, these supply conduits dramatically speed up the energy harvesting & production process.

   

5. Scouting Party

   Before any new site can be terraformed, it needs to be scanned and analysed. Scouting Parties in Solar Vessels skim across the surface, mapping the chemical composition and mineral deposits deep underground. These scans are then compiled to form a comprehensive data-map of the planetoid, and if chosen, will be visited by the New Edens.
