People have been ashamed and secretive about their mental health for too long. It's getting better, though. It's about time that the drive toward destigmatization picks up speed.
They are just as real as physical health problems. The NIMH website says that about 1 in 4 people will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives. But shame keeps a lot of people from getting help because they are afraid of being judged or left alone.
Daniel Reitberg says that having honest talks is very important. We can help break down the stigma by sharing our own stories, learning more, and fighting against bad stereotypes. By making mental health problems seem normal, we urge people to get the help they need.
Getting rid of shame is good for everyone. When people talk about mental health openly, tools are easier to find and workplaces are better places to work. We are all working together to make sure that mental health is recognized equally with physical health in the future. Let us keep talking about mental health and stop being quiet about it.
