The Future Only Exists in Your Mind

I was on my way to dinner with my parents and my boyfriend. I knew I’d only need 15 minutes. They needed 25.

Right after finishing my class, I called them— They hadn’t even left yet.

Immediately, my mind started racing: They’ll be late again! I’ll have to sit there alone, needing to wait for them...

But then I caught myself. I was thinking about the future. I was getting worked up over something that hadn’t even happened yet.

And even if I'd sit there alone, waiting for them, how did I know it would be bad? Maybe I’d actually enjoy a moment alone after a stressful day. Maybe I’d take a moment to unwind. Maybe I wouldn’t care at all.

So I shifted my focus back to the present. I made myself comfortable in the car and enjoyed the drive. When I'd arrived, I’d deal with the situation then.

And surprise— It wasn’t a big deal at all.

How often do you stress about a future that only exists in your mind? I did and am still doing it quite a lot.

During my 10-day Vipassana meditation experience, I was taught one simple but powerful lesson:

Stay in the present.

The past is gone.

The future isn’t real yet.

All we have is now.

I’m trying to live by that. It’s not easy—my mind still wants to jump ahead, to plan, to worry. But every time I catch myself and return to the present, I feel one step closer to real peace.

And this was one of those moments.
