Getting Started with Empire Builder

The end of the lonely token launch

We've spent the last two years watching token launches play out the same way.

A creator deploys a coin. The community rallies for 48 hours. Jeets dump. The chart flatlines. The creator goes quiet. Holders are left wondering what happened to the "community" they were promised.

The problem isn't the tokens themselves, it's the infrastructure around them. Most launchpads hand creators a contract and a Telegram link, then call it a day. There's no built-in way to actually run a community once the token exists.

Empire Builder is taking a different approach. Instead of treating a token launch as the finish line, it treats it as the starting point, giving creators an entire toolkit to build, reward, and grow their token communities.

Why "Empires" and Not Just Tokens

The word empire reflects a structural shift in how on-chain communities are being built.

A traditional token gives you a chart and a holder count. An empire gives you a treasury, a leaderboard, a booster system, and a built-in reward distribution engine, all tied to the token, all controlled by the creator (the "Guardian").

It's the difference between launching a coin and launching an economy.

Who Can Build an Empire

Empire Builder works with both new and existing tokens, and can be attached to a Farcaster profile or custom hub (for tokenless access ot the tools).

For existing tokens:

  • If it's a Clanker token you must be the original creator.

  • For any other token, you'll need to be in the top 5 holders — a Community Take Over (CTO) mechanism that prevents abandoned tokens from being hijacked while still giving committed holders a path forward.

For new tokens:

  • Anyone can deploy through Empire Builder.

  • An empire is automatically spun up alongside the token.

  • Creators get an enhanced fee structure (more on that below).

For no token:

  • Anyone can attach an Empire to their Farcaster profile or custom hub

  • Perfect for those who aren’t ready for a token yet, but want to utilize the Empire infra.

Step 1: Launch Your Empire

The setup starts with a single click. Hit "Create" and choose what you want your Empire hub to revolve around — a token you've launched, an existing token you hold, a Farcaster profile, or any other anchor for your community.

Empire-deployed tokens get the full premium treatment: enhanced fee splits, native treasury integration, and unlocked features that take longer to configure on imported tokens.

Step 2: Build Your Leaderboards

This is where Empire Builder really separates itself from anything else on Base.

Most token communities have one implicit leaderboard: who holds the most. That's it. Whales win, small holders are background noise, and there's no real way to recognize the people actually showing up.

Empire Builder turns leaderboards into a customizable layer. Using built-in templates, you can rank your community by:

  • Token balances — the classic measure

  • NFT holdings — useful for projects with collection-based identity

  • Social activity — Farcaster engagement, casts, replies, recasts

  • Staked balances — rewarding long-term commitment over speculation

  • Anything else — through external API integrations or CSV uploads

That last point is the underrated one. If you have an off-chain metric that matters to your community, you can pipe it into a leaderboard and have it count.

The result is that a single Empire can run multiple leaderboards in parallel, each measuring a different kind of contribution. A holder leaderboard, a creator leaderboard, an engagement leaderboard, all visible in the same hub.

Step 3: Add Your Boosters

Boosters are the amplification layer.

Each Empire can configure onchain actions — staking, NFT holdings, token holdings, or reputation signals — that community members can take to multiply their leaderboard scores. Hold a partner NFT, get a multiplier. Stake your tokens, get a bigger one. Maintain a certain reputation score, stack them.

Why this matters: Boosters break the flat hierarchy of "whoever holds the most wins." A small holder who actively participates — collects the right NFTs, stakes long-term, contributes socially — can outrank a passive whale.

Practical setup tips:

  • Start with accessible boosters. If your minimum requirements are too steep, only existing whales benefit.

  • Mix booster types. Combining staking, NFT holdings, and reputation creates a layered engagement loop.

Step 4: Build Your Treasury

The treasury is the payout layer — and it's deliberately designed to live next to your leaderboards rather than off in a separate dashboard.

Each Empire includes an audited, non-custodial Splits smart vault. Only you and guardians you appoint can control it, which removes the "trust me bro" element from creator-controlled treasuries.

You can fund it three ways:

  • Direct deposits — drop ETH or any ERC-20 in yourself

  • Inbound community flows — route launch proceeds, contributor splits, or other community-generated revenue into the vault

  • A combination of both

Balances stay readable directly on your Empire page. That's the whole point — backers should be able to see treasury depth and leaderboard participation in the same view, instead of hopping to Etherscan or a separate analytics tool to figure out whether the project actually has resources.

Step 5: Reward Your Holders

This is where treasury and leaderboards finally close the loop.

Empire Builder gives Emperors several distribution modes, all aligned with the leaderboard math:

  • Proportional payouts — sweep the treasury into leaderboard rewards weighted by rank or score

  • Even cohort distribution — split rewards evenly across a defined group (top 50, top 100, etc.)

  • Raffle tiers — randomized payouts that still respect leaderboard tiers, adding gamified upside

Booster multipliers carry through. If a holder's score is amplified by a 3x staking booster, that multiplier is reflected in their reward share. The behavior the leaderboard incentivized is the behavior the treasury actually rewards.

For one-off campaigns, Emperors can also send loyalty bursts from the treasury or ancillary NFT/ERC-20 drops directly from their own wallet. All distributions are verifiable onchain, which means treasury outflows reinforce leaderboard behavior instead of drifting off into unrelated transfers that nobody can track.

Where Empire Builder Fits in the Bigger Picture

Zoom out, and Empire Builder is part of a broader shift in how onchain communities are structured.

The first wave of token launches was about speculation: get listed, pump, dump, repeat. The second wave, kicked off by Clanker, was about distribution, giving creators easier ways to launch and earn fees.

Empire Builder represents the third wave: retention. It is the infrastructure required to keep a community engaged after the launch hype fades.

Whether Empire Builder becomes the standard or just one option among many, the model it's pushing is the right one.

The future of onchain communities won't belong to the projects that launch the loudest. It'll belong to the ones that figure out how to keep their holders actually showing up, week after week. The ones that are building empires.
