The biggest story of the week was the ongoing Coldcard attack. Across four waves, attackers drained roughly 1,816 BTC (about $114M) from more than 5,200 addresses since July 30. Bitcoin traded lower over the week, falling from around $65K to $62.7K. Meanwhile, Strategy sold another 1,638 BTC for approximately $105M, reducing its holdings to 842,138 BTC.
Prediction markets continued to expand, with Polymarket, Polymarket US and Kalshi reaching a combined $50.6B in July trading volume, up 7.7% month over month. BitGo launched BitGo Link, enabling institutional clients to connect exchange accounts from platforms including Crypto Com, Kraken and Coinbase to its custody platform. Robinhood secured UK crypto registration ahead of the country's new regulatory regime, while Coinbase shares dropped to their lowest level in roughly two and a half years following weaker-than-expected Q2 earnings before recovering some losses.
On the regulatory front, Japan and the U.S. confirmed they jointly intervened to stabilize the yen after it hit a 40-year low. Bernstein lowered the odds of the Clarity Act passing in 2026 but expects the SEC and CFTC to accelerate crypto rulemaking under Project Crypto if the legislation fails. Meanwhile, the SEC delayed a decision on Nasdaq's proposed Bitcoin options while continuing its review of CME-related filings.
