Nigeria, the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa, has been grappling with economic challenges in recent years. With a rapidly growing population of over 200 million people, Nigeria has faced two major recessions since 2016, fueled by an unstable political situation and leading to high unemployment rates of 30-40%. Moreover, the country has been experiencing high inflation, currently around 30%, which has put pressure on its currency, the naira.
Amidst these economic uncertainties, Nigerians have been increasingly turning to cryptocurrencies as an alternative means of saving and transacting. According to a recent Chainalysis report, Nigeria ranks second in the world in terms of cryptocurrency adoption when measured by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP).
This growing interest in cryptocurrencies has been further evidenced by the transaction volume growth in Nigeria between 2022 and 2023, despite the country's challenging regulatory environment. Nigeria's year-over-year growth in cryptocurrency transaction volume highlights its position as Africa's leader in crypto adoption.

Nigeria has witnessed a significant surge in cryptocurrency adoption in recent years, with the country consistently ranking among the top nations globally in terms of adoption rates. However, the regulatory environment surrounding cryptocurrencies in Nigeria has been tumultuous. In February 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a ban on cryptocurrency transactions, prohibiting financial institutions from facilitating crypto-related activities. This move led to a temporary setback in the growth of the local cryptocurrency market.
Despite the ban, the cryptocurrency landscape in Nigeria continued to evolve. In September 2023, the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) declared Binance Nigeria, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, as an illegal entity operating in the country. This action further highlighted the regulatory challenges faced by crypto businesses in Nigeria. Most recently, in the past week the Nigerian government has detained a Binance executive, after accusing the company of tax violations.
A compliance officer for the cryptocurrency exchange told senior executives and Nigerian contacts that the company had been asked to pay $150 million in crypto.
Surprisingly though, in December 2023, the CBN reversed its stance on crypto assets, advising banks to disregard the previous ban on cryptocurrency transactions. This change in position signaled a potential shift towards a more accommodative regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies in Nigeria.
Despite the regulatory challenges, Nigeria's cryptocurrency transaction volume continued to grow between 2022 and 2023. This growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for alternative financial solutions and the resilience of the Nigerian crypto community.
