Smart contracts are self-executing pieces of code that are managed on a blockchain. Most blockchains that support smart contracts, such as Ethereum, are public by default. This means that all data used in your smart contracts are exposed to the public. Secret Network improves on traditional smart contracts by supporting encrypted inputs and outputs and encrypted state for smart contracts — data privacy for sensitive information stored on the blockchain.
Privacy is critical to the security and adoption of Web3, from DeFi to NFTs and more. Secret Network brings new and unique privacy functionality to the space and will be critical to the next generation of successful Web3 applications.
The Secret Network is built as a decentralized network of computers (secret nodes) using trusted execution environments (TEEs) to allow private and secure computing over encrypted data. TEEs function as a “black box” for data processing and are used in all kinds of everyday platforms, such as smartphones and video game consoles.
As data is encrypted and private by default, Secret Network users have “view keys” to view their sensitive data. View keys can be shared with third parties such as auditors, wallets, and explorers. They allow users to retain control over their data and decide what is shared — and with whom.
Secret contracts, written in the Rust programming language, allow applications to use encrypted data without ever exposing the data itself — even to nodes on the network performing calculations. This allows for unique use cases that are simply not possible on other blockchains, bringing innovation to NFTs, Dapps, DeFi, Games, etc.
As large data monopolies and an overly centralized Internet continue to put our privacy, security, and society at risk, it is important that privacy is protected and supported by all the technologies and services we use.
