Granada, Spain, 1975
The moon screamed over the central courtyard of the Martínez estate. The Alhambra, perched jealously on the mountain, lamented the lunar glow of her companion. The yellows of her skin dimmed the beauty of the candles. Everything whispered romantic mystery that night. High above the city, too far to hear the bustle of the crowds. Deep inside the Martínez house, on an ordinary Saturday.
The wooden boards seemed ready to break under the rhythm of the guitar and the sharp strikes of heels.
The cigarette burned my lips in its final breath.
The gypsy’s body shook, cathartic, with every clap.
I see him.
The sound of sweaty, bronzed stomps made the patio walls spit out their lime dust. A silver earthquake of red wine and jasmine tears devoured the art of her hips.
A familiar shadow in the zaguán.
Her skirt swirled violently, whipping with each blood-fueled stomp she delivered to the boards.
Hiding in the darkness, waiting for me.
By the fountain, Soraya’s widow sat alone with her jug of wine. The emeralds on her neck tried to outshine the darkness in her eyes. Eyes as black as the devil’s soul, gleaming sensually, masking her sorrow.
Under the doorway.
An earring escaped frantically from the gypsy’s ear.
Five errant steps took me to the zaguán.
The silver earring shattered the glass of my cup with its strike.
My gaze returned, confused, to the table.
Wine spilled across the white tablecloth, extinguishing the candles.
The gypsy stopped.
Soraya’s widow looked at me with the sorrow of the oleanders surrounding the fountain.
I turned.
There was no one left in the zaguán.
I know. It’s him.
A story that will undoubtedly leave no one indifferent, inspired by the wonderful city of Granada, the cradle where dreams are born.
“When reality falls asleep in the darkest hours, the ghosts of the past seem to whisper to the brightest corners of your soul.”
