With Pectra now live, one of the features that impacts Hero validators is the MAX_EFFECTIVE_BALANCE. To accommodate balances larger than 32, a multiplier is applied using 32 ETH that increases linearly; for example, 48 ETH = 1.5x / 2048 = 64x.
Heroglyphs' main goal has always been to increase revenue for Solo Stakers, ideally motivating more people to decentralize Ethereum by running a machine at home.
In early 2018, we saw some exciting games around blockchain consensus. Games like FOMO3D and POWH3D stirred up much interest and helped people push the boundaries of what is possible through blockchain gamification. During the life of these games, more than 20,000 ETH were at stake, and vulnerabilities or attacks like block stuffing emerged.
These old games prompted a new idea for the Heroglyphs system: Would it be possible to create a prediction game that uses the graffiti field?
Hero3D is a prediction game in which players guess the next block to be generated by a block proposer, which contains the “HERO3D” specific syntax in the graffiti.
A jackpot is formed when players place stakes on their guesses, and anyone can win by betting a minimum amount. The size of your guess limits the return on a successful prediction, and winning the jackpot is only possible if a minimum is reached, effectively helping to prevent Martingale attacks.
Any Complete Validator with a Heroglyphs ID can participate by including the “HERO3D” syntax in their graffiti.
Since a validator will know 2 epochs in advance that they will be the Block proposer (BP), there needs to be a buffer on the guess time. Otherwise, BP’s would be in total control of the outcome of their guesses. This puts the buffer at ~14 minutes, providing a large enough buffer outside 2 epochs. With ~7150 blocks produced a day and ~6 currently proposed as Heroglyphs blocks, it would be quite challenging and even deterring to try and predict the exact block containing the Heroglyph’s specific syntax. Guesses will be made for batches of 10 blocks to facilitate ease and effectiveness for players.
Upon a player making a correct guess, provided the minimum has been reached, the Jackpot will be split up between the Block proposer (20%), Players (48%), Treasury (2%), and to the next round (20%). All ETH from plays that do not win will go to the Jackpot until the next player guesses correctly.

The protocol has reached over 1,000 IDs, but the Solo Staking market is still not fully ready to scale for two reasons. First, 32 ETH is still too much of a financial obligation for the common mortal. However, we are seeing improvements on the accessibility front from Obol, Lido CSM, and other solutions like RocketPool, which Heroglyphs currently supports. Second, the technical requirements and maintenance for users to operate validators are far from trivial.
Considering this, we’ve developed new methods to reduce barriers, allowing more participants to experience the potential of Heroglyphs.
Section 4.1 of the whitepaper focuses on monetizing “free real estate.” In the spirit of lowering the barrier to entry, we examined a wave that brought many new entrants into the ecosystem: NFTs. So, what would be the equivalent of “free real estate” for NFT? Some older participants might remember an art project that pioneered the "2021 NFT Bullrun," released mere months before BAYC. That project was Hashmasks 🎭 A unique property they contained was the ability to change the name of the NFT using their token, the Name Change Token (NCT).

Use cases for changing the NFT’s name never really emerged and contained constraints such as:
No identical names
25 characters (vs 32 characters for graffiti)
Not case sensitive
No leading or trailing spaces
Only alphanumeric characters are eligible for use
Used names become available immediately after the name of the NFT is changed
While the naming implementation by Suum Cuique Labs has inadvertently led to incompatibility with Obelisk, we’ve successfully navigated this challenge. You can now rename your Hashmasks to farm-specific whitelisted tickers, earn from a reserve of ETH, and enjoy additional rewards.
The Hashmasks iteration appears to be the most straightforward method to implement Heroglyphs with NFTs; however, restricting it to just one collection would be disappointing, so we included a few more.
To access Obelisk, you will need an Obelisk NFT Pass, similar to an ID for Heroglyphs validators. It can be minted for 0.05 ETH to unlock all the fun.
There is no easy way to translate this Hashmask ability to a regular NFT, so we created a wrapper that allows eligible NFTs to change their allocated 25-character graffiti. You will need "HCT" tokens to change your graffiti. This differs from validator graffiti, which can be changed for free at any time, as it is not on-chain.
In the initial stage of Obelisk, Hashmasks and five additional NFT collections have been selected to receive rewards. They were chosen based on the following criteria:
Low Floor Price
Provenance
Lost Community
Generative
LobsterDAO: An OG collective of DeFi & NFT degens and whales founded back in 2018. The NFT serves as a membership vote in the LobsterDAO and a key to access a token-gated chat (plans include using the wrapped version to unlock the chat).

After wrapping your eligible NFT, you can decide which tickers to inscribe into the graffiti. Initially, there is an ETH rewards Megapool farm called “Senusret”, in addition to the previous meme tokens, which are also farmable. This will require you to transfer the affiliated Genesis Key NFT in your wallet over to Ethereum Mainnet so Obelisk will recognize it. Note that the graffiti is limited to 25 characters, so you'll need to be selective with your inscriptions. All wrapped NFTs will accrue HCT, excluding Hashmasks (as they require NCT), which can then be used to change your graffiti once you have 90 of them. HCT can also be acquired through an LP Pool on Balancer containing HCT/WETH.

250,000 HCT have been pre-minted, with emissions at 1 HCT per staked (wrapped) NFT, with your ratio of the pool based on the NFT’s multiplier. Once the supply hits 1,000,000 tokens, the emissions taper off dramatically by 98%. All HCT used for name-changing your NFT is burned from the supply.

After a few days of opening Obelisk and gaining new participants, we will unlock the Graduation feature, which allows new collections to be proposed. To ensure validity, collections undergo a vetting process through UMA, and a fee will be charged to prevent Sybil attacks.
A new tab, “Firehose”, has also been introduced. It is like a history board for all the activity on Obelisk.

Heroglyphs has always wanted to scale out to as many participants as possible. Enabling RocketPool and Eigen Pods to participate has helped create inclusion and grow the protocol. The next step is to continue finding ways to lower the cost barrier to entry.
Heroglyphs has now been deployed to Gnosis Chain. Gnosis is one of the original Ethereum side chains and aligns with Ethereum's values by not compromising on decentralization and acting like our very own Kusama for the network.
Running a Gnosis Validator is much cheaper, as it requires only 1 GNO. Network fees are significantly lower than those on mainnet Ethereum, allowing for cost-effective scalability and speed. As this is a different version of Heroglyphs, validators must mint a new Gnosis Validator ID for 0.1 GNO to participate.
The initial rollout includes the original Heroglyphs game for mining tickers and a reduced-cost version of Hero3D.
Gnosis validators participating in Heroglyphs can earn rewards through two complementary mechanisms: graffiti-based signalling and attestation mining.
Validators can signal participation by including “GNO” in their block graffiti. This qualifies them to mine from a staked GNO reward pool (osGNO), where yield is distributed to Heroglyphs validators by proposing valid blocks with this ticker. Additionally, adding “HERO3D” to graffiti allows validators to join the Hero3D game, unlocking extra rewards.
The attestation system has evolved. Instead of non-transferable soulbound badges, validators now earn $ATT, a tradable token that tracks participation and performance:
Each successful attestation earns 1 $ATT
Missing an attestation earns 0 $ATT
Missing a block proposal deducts 1 $ATT
Validators can later redeem $ATT for GNO rewards from the same osGNO pool, effectively blending execution-layer activity with consensus-layer incentives. This is considered a manual redemption and will incur a 15% penalty for Hero ID holders and a 25% penalty for non-ID holders.
Mining GNO is slightly different on Gnosis, as a block proposal will trigger an $ATT redemption and incur a 0% penalty, unlike manual redemption. Validators will need to configure a few predetermined settings regarding how the system will redeem your accrued $ATT. Some default parameters will be established as suggestions. You must ensure you grant the system permission to use your $ATT to redeem osGNO, which can be found in the Graffiti Tool panel.
Validators have the same options as before to create parent-child relationships between their IDs and can redirect rewards to other addresses.

Minted-out Genesis Keys are eligible for the Icedrop: Kabosuchan, Lueygi, Bera (OogaBooga), and Porigon. You will receive your portion of the total Icedrop for each Genesis Key you hold. The claim occurs on Arbitrum, with a 3-week cliff and a 6-week vesting schedule. Be sure to claim the Icedrop before moving the Genesis Keys to Mainnet for use with Obelisk. All streams are issued through Sablier.
This collection can be minted for free when you propose a valid Heroglyphs block with the attached ticker: “KAMISAMA”. Alternatively, anyone can mint one for 1 ETH. The high minting price has been designed mainly to prioritize Heroglyphs Validator participants.
Kamisama is a collection with multiple factions and a deep lore rooted in urban legends and mythology. Each NFT is uniquely handcrafted by Fuzuki Ishida a prolific pixel artists living in Tokyo who collaborated with some famous creator of Bleach, Censorman, Golden Kamuy and more recently was featured on the “Weekly Shōnen Jump” cover of the magazine.
They have a special status within the Obelisk and the rest of the ecosystem. The art and metadata will be revealed once a faction is fully minted out.
