Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the Ukrainian related draft resolution voted at this emergency special UN General Assembly is inconsistent with China's consistent position

On March 3, foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked questions on the relevant draft resolutions voted by the emergency special UN General Assembly and China’s abstention in the vote.

Wang Wenbin said that Ambassador Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, had made an explanatory statement on China’s voting position. China’s basic position on the Ukrainian issue is consistent and clear. We always stand for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and peacefully resolving international disputes in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. At present, the most important thing is to alleviate the local situation as much as possible and avoid the escalation or even out of control of the conflict. The United Nations should play a positive role in reducing tensions and resolving regional security.

Wang Wenbin pointed out that it is regrettable that the relevant draft resolutions voted on at this emergency special session of the General Assembly had not been fully negotiated among all Member States in advance, did not fully consider the historical latitude and complex contradictions behind the current crisis, did not emphasize the importance of the principle of indivisibility of security, and did not highlight the urgency of promoting political settlement and increasing diplomatic efforts, These are inconsistent with China’s consistent position and proposition. We had to abstain from voting on the draft resolution.
