Could Jean-Paul Sartre lead to a better understanding of NFTs? At Kanji, we think so.
Think of most of the current projects:
• Firstly, NFTs are created and sold.
• Then, the creators gradually assigned utilities to those NFTs.
Their existence precedes their essence, as would sum up our French beloved philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre. However, in his view, this definition refers to the human being, not objects. We are born, then we define ourselves. The mode of existence of objects is different: their essence precedes their existence. You think of a table (essence), then you create it (existence).
Thus, the greatest mistake made by the crypto-guy over the past few months has been to think of NFTs as humans while they’re objects.
Creators/Brands/Web2 Companies have to think about why they create their NFTs - when it’s not pure art - before actually selling them.
This inversion has already caused much damage: “Those overpriced, useless and ugly monkey pictures that people can own for real because they are stored on the blockchain.” would say the average web3 guy. Thus, the collective unconscious largely thinks that NFTs are useless, optional, scams and are just an easy cash grab for already-famous-and-wealthy entities. But, NFTs aren’t only collectibles, meant to be bought and displayed:
They actually represent the most accurate version of non-physical objects, as they are easily transferable, 24/7 traceable, scarce if wanted and they are YOURS - check our mirror for a deeper analysis.
With the development of other essential NFT features such as Rental NFTs, Soulbond Tokens, and sharable but non-transferable NFTs, this industry will have the possibility to shine again.
Because let’s remind something: people have always bought digital frozen content hosted in private databases:
• Video game items
• Illustrator Templates
• Followers on Instagram
NFTs represent free digital content in its most efficient way since they allow composability between apps: your @LensProtocol profile, minted as an NFT, enables your community to follow you on every application built on top of Lens.
This is a real game changer for Influencers: the promotion of your other social media profiles - Tik Tok on your insta profile, for example - is no longer needed, they will follow all your web3 profiles, in a single click.
And it’s powered by NFTs. That's why they are here to stay.
Thanks, JP Sartre, for this intuition.
