Alright I slept on it and it’s still eating at me. This is poison. Is it a step toward 10x’ing DAUs? Almost certainly. I don’t blame Merkle. But this is exactly the kind of mechanism that promotes Current Thingism and tanks the average shelf life of content on a platform. It incentivizes top level casts and replies in the moment’s hottest little bucket over sharing the original thoughts on niche topics that made this place so appealing in the first place. And it was the complete absence of this kind of timeline cruft that made Farcaster feel so preternaturally high signal and productive of non-regretted interactions. But that is far from the only source of revenue for a social business Forget Zora On here WC already is monetizable by - swaps - storage - new user accounts - advertising (like airdrop program) - token (the investors here surely have fat warrants, will mint off of retail chuds when that drops) no need to bilk us here

yes a no brainer now appreciate the insane amount of work to make this a good UX w/o an intermediary taking a rake or freezing accounts crypto wallet that is secure, self custodial, and recoverable that doesn’t require remembering a seed phrase integrated into social network where each account maps to exactly 1 wallet with subcent transaction fees with reasonable on ramps the combo of this is weeks old / still being born (e.g. web wallet)
Diamond app on the $DESO chain offers tipping through a thing called diamonds.

100% I think this is part of why there’s so much backlash to the content coin stuff. Base is clearly trying to push something that benefits the protocols but doesn’t make sense for most users If they were actually serious about getting more creators onchain embracing tipping would make way more sense. But it wouldn’t be as lucrative for the protocols

1% hit rate is probably ISANELY HIGH tbh. You look at some of the largest creators on youtube or twitch, which have cultures of giving, and maybe 0.01-0.1% sub or give even once. The content generally doesn't bring value to the people with the money.
Well then we need to be honest about that and stop trying then. Why are we beating a dead horse

look, I just need 10,000 people to act in unison to make the math work. The reality is that will happen to only 1% of creators. So it’s back to the same problem.
But you don’t need 10k people to act in unison — you need 100. Or 50. And it’s fully positive. People get to feel good about freely giving for something they valued and creator doesn’t have to worry about people losing money via gesture of support
To clarify, I’m all for the positive aspect of this. I know my response might come off otherwise, I just question the reality of it at scale. I guess a way to combat my skepticism is to see a lot of accounts with 5k or less followers see this work for them as you describe.
