A Practical Checklist for Evaluating a Web3 Protocol Before Using It

Before connecting a wallet or committing funds, pause to understand what a protocol does and what using it requires. A polished interface is not a substitute for clear documentation or a careful review. Use this checklist to organize your questions; it is a starting point, not a guarantee of safety. Lino defi

1. Read the documentation

Look for an explanation of the protocol’s purpose, how a user interacts with it, and what happens at each step. Check whether the documentation defines important terms and explains prerequisites, fees, and any limits or conditions that apply. If a key part of the process is unclear, do not fill the gap with assumptions: look for an answer before proceeding. Lino defi

2. Identify the risks and what you could lose

Find the protocol’s risk disclosures and read them before acting. Note what could go wrong, what assets or access you would expose, and whether the documentation explains any relevant limitations. Treat vague or missing explanations as reasons to investigate further, not as evidence that there is no risk. If you cannot describe the potential downside in your own words, pause. Lino defi

3. Verify the interaction before connecting

Check that you are on the site you intended to visit and that the action in front of you matches the action you chose. Before approving a wallet request, read what it asks you to do. Do not approve a request you do not understand. If the prompt, destination, or requested permission is unexpected, stop and review it rather than trying to move through the flow quickly. Lino defi

4. Evaluate the user experience

A usable flow should make the next step and its consequences understandable. Review the screens and instructions before committing to anything: can you tell what you are being asked to approve, and where can you go for help? Confusing prompts and unexplained steps are useful signals to slow down and seek clarification. Lino defi

5. Make a decision—and keep the option to walk away

Before proceeding, summarize the protocol’s purpose, the action you are taking, and the risks you identified. If those answers are incomplete, wait. If the documentation and interaction are clear enough for you to make an informed choice, proceed only on terms you understand and are comfortable with. Choosing not to connect or commit funds is a valid outcome of the review. Lino defi

The short version

Read the documentation. Look for explicit risk disclosures. Understand each wallet request before approving it. Treat unanswered questions as a reason to pause. The goal is not to make uncertainty disappear; it is to make a considered decision before you act. Lino defi
