Last night, reading "Bone Button Borscht" to my kids, something clicked. The story unfolds in a destitute village where a hungry beggar arrives on a cold winter night. Met with closed doors and claims of poverty, he announces he can make soup from a bone button. Curiosity draws villagers out, and as he starts "cooking," he cleverly suggests small additions – a pot here, some carrots there, a few potatoes. Each villager contributes what little they have until, mysteriously, a rich borscht emerges that feeds everyone. Through this clever orchestration, the beggar transforms not just ingredients into soup, but strangers into a community. In this simple story about a beggar who arrives in a poor village with nothing but a bone button, I saw perfect parallels to the work we're doing with community building and value creation.
The beggar doesn't create soup from nothing – he creates the conditions for something greater. By convincing each villager to contribute what little they have, he catalyzes a transformation: individual scarcity becomes collective abundance. Think for example how Uniswap liquidity pool sources fractions of liquidity into a single smart contract - and suddenly you have a market for a newly launched token.
This pattern shows up in successful crypto communities. Each member brings their unique resources, skills, or tokens to the table, creating value far beyond the sum of individual contributions.
At its heart, crypto technology creates systems enabling trust and collaboration between strangers. Like the bone button in our soup, tokens serve as catalysts – focal points around which communities organize and create value. The token itself might seem trivial, but its power lies in its ability to align incentives and bring people together.
The lesson from both Bone Button Borscht and successful crypto projects rings clear: magic happens when people come together. In both cases:
A catalyst brings people together
Individual contributions seem small in isolation, but their true value unlocks when they come together
Trust-building mechanisms (the beggar's story, smart contracts) enable cooperation
Collective value creation exceeds individual capabilities
The Jewish roots of this story resonate with me personally. While I'm not religious, stories like this highlight how religion, at its core, serves as a framework for bringing people together and building community. Like any powerful tool for human coordination, it can unite or divide. These frameworks – whether ancient religions or modern crypto protocols – are meant to facilitate human collaboration and mutual benefit. A reminder how we should always strive to get the positive of human coordination!
The future of community building in the digital age echoes the bone button's lesson: true value isn't in the token itself but in its ability to unite people toward a common goal.
Bullish on communities. Bullish on connection. Bullish on the power of people coming together to create something greater than themselves.
After reading the "Bone Button Borscht" bed time story to my kids, I thought it's a must share for the /Parenting channel. If you don't have the book - there's a 7min Youtube video link inside What other crypto parents here think?
