The fort located on Tamariz beach in Estoril was part of a line of coastal defense fortifications that stretched from Abano beach (Guincho) to Caxias.
It was intended to prevent an eventual enemy landing with the purpose of occupying the Capital.

Its original name was Forte da Cruz de Santo António d’Assubida, and it was intended to “cross fire” with another fort, now destroyed, which went by the name of Forte de Santo António.
Thus the beach was protected from landings by hostile forces.

Construction
Forte da Cruz dates back to the 17th century during the reign of King Filipe III of Portugal and IV of Spain. The fort was part of the coastal defense fortifications that started at Praia do Abano and extended to Praia de Caxias, which were built to defend Lisbon from foreign invasions.

Its original name was “Forte da Cruz de Santo António d’Assubida” and its objective was to cross fire with another fort, which no longer exists, called “Forte de Santo António”. This strategy allowed the beach to be safe and protected from possible enemy landings.
Currently, the Fort was acquired from the State in 1894 by the great-grandfather of the current owners, who at the time maintained the tradition of accompanying the King and his court every year during the summer holidays in Estoril and Cascais. It was already fashionable to swim in the sea, a special retreat combined with the therapeutic waters that existed in the area.

In that phase, extensive restoration work was carried out and the Fort was transformed into a house “with modern comforts”. The house was designed to combine elements of a Tuscan castle with the fort's original military purpose, thus creating a unique landmark.
