It was built after 1640, as part of the Barra do Tejo defense plan, directed by the Count of Cantanhede. Equipped with a large battery compared to the fort and three juxtaposed rectangular bodies, with different areas, it crossed fire with the Citadel battery and defended the small mouth of Ribeira dos Mochos. In the second half of the 18th century it was the subject of several construction campaigns, the most significant being that of 1762-1763, during which the parapet was enlarged and that of 1793, which carried out the functional reorganization of the battery and barracks spaces.

In 1864, when it was already deactivated, the need to reinforce the maritime signaling of the northern corridor of Barra do Tejo led to the construction of a lighthouse on the site, a work that would be carried out by the architect Francisco Pereira da Silva. Completed in 1867, the Santa Marta Lighthouse, 8 meters high, began to mark this area of the Cascais coast. It would be expanded in 1936, becoming part of the network of automated lighthouses in 1983, from which date it no longer had the regular presence of lighthouse keepers.
As part of a protocol between the Portuguese Navy and Cascais City Council, the Fort and Lighthouse of Santa Marta were the target of a requalification and museumization project, carried out by architects Francisco Aires Mateus and Manuel Aires Mateus, which would be inaugurated in 2007. Continuing ensuring maritime signage, the lighthouse became a museum that showcases four centuries of stories and experiences, serving as a space for revealing and disseminating the plural universe of Portuguese lighthouses.
