The Bettencourt Palace is located in the parish of Sé, in the historic center of the city and municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island, in the Azores.
It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1980.

History
It is an old manor building from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which underwent some changes during this last century and possibly the next.
Here lived, between 1820 and 1821, Francisco António de Araújo e Azevedo, seventh Captain-General of the Azores and last of the Absolutist Regime. He was replaced in office in 1820 by Francisco de Borja Garção Stockler, but remained on the island because he had family here, and was assassinated on April 3, 1821, for having led the liberal uprising in the Fortress of São João Baptista.
It is classified as a Property of Public Interest by Resolution n.º 28/80, of April 29, classification consumed by inclusion in the classified set of the Central Zone of the City of Angra do Heroísmo, according to Resolution n.º 41/80, of 11 June, and article 10 and paragraph a) of article 57 of Regional Legislative Decree no. 29/2004/A, of 24 August.
Characteristics
The set is marked by a sober decoration in Baroque style, in keeping with the taste of the construction period. On its main façade, the rich portal carved in stonework from the region stands out, flanked by two Solomonic columns and topped by composite capitals and architrave and a large stone cartouche that frames the Bettencourt coat of arms.
The building rises on two floors, the ground floor and the main floor, and is also integrated by a quadrangular tower facing south, divided internally into three floors. Restoration work focused on the stonework on the facades, in particular those on the first floor windows, with tall frames and elegant cutouts. Also worthy of note are the iron structures on the balconies, reinstated in the style of construction at the time.
The doors of the reading rooms open to the spacious atrium on the ground floor, to the right and left, the first of which is intended for general reading and the consultation of periodicals, and the one on the opposite side, for consultation of manuscripts and specimens belonging to the Reserved Section. It has the respective furniture and shelves in Brazilian wood, in the style of the old bookstores of the 17th century, in which the entire usable area of the walls was entirely covered with shelves or armarets.
The ceilings of the atrium and the two reading rooms are made of cedar and rich African woods, the last two bearing the coats of arms of the city of Angra and the Bettencourt family, weapons that can also be seen on the draperies of the aforementioned rooms. At the back of the General Reading Room are two beautiful turned bookcases, from the former Municipal Library, which belonged to the poet Almeida Garrett. This room communicates with the deposits in the west wing, of which the first two are full of bibliographic specimens and the last filled with documentary specimens.
