2024 marked a transformative year for MesoReefDAO as we expanded the reach of Decentralized Science (DeSci) in coral reef conservation and the web3 space. By supporting conservation projects, advancing community-driven initiatives, and integrating blockchain technology, we amplified our impact. While many ideas are still being refined, this year brought several exciting highlights worth celebrating:
1. Earlier this year, we allied with Notessential.io and Coral Connect, with the potential to support projects in Southeast Asian and Micronesian coral reefs.
2. Project updates within MesoReefDAO's 'Restoration of the Biodiversity of Reef Assemblages in the Mexican Caribbean,' conducted in collaboration with Iberostar Wave of Change and LEEAC Cinvestav Unidad Mérida, include the completion of a technical report on aquarium maintenance.
3. We participate at ETH Denver 2024 in the DeSci Summit: Auranova, SciOS, Nerdlabs hacker house, and other side events.
4. Outreach Workshop: 'Aquarium Diversity' – Coral Reef and Aquarium Conservation Activities Led by Undergraduates.
5. Participation in the 'Divers for a Day' workshop, targeted at remote middle school students.
6. Engagement and workshop aimed at middle school students focusing on scientific outreach activities as part of the 11F initiative, titled 'Girl Divers for a Day.
7. Participation at ETHcinco de Mayo as a DeSci Community with a panel of DeSci with DeSciworld and DeSci MX members.
8. Project updates within MesoReefDAO's 'Restoration of the Biodiversity of Fish Assemblages in the Mexican Caribbean' include the preparation of post-larvae traps, material replacements, and maintenance for the 2024-2025 project.
9. We officially signed the documents making MesoReefDAO a legal entity in Mexico: MesoReefDAO Foundation.

10. At the XII Mexican Coral Reef Congress and III Pan American Coral Reef Congress, our team and colleagues presented research and preliminary results (18) on coral reef ecosystems and conservation in todoscicese-UABC_oficial, organized by the Mexican Society of Coral Reefs SOMAC XIICMAC & IIICPAC, in Ensenada, Mexico (an ICRSCoralReefs Chapter). MesoReefDAO members participated in Session #2 with presentation numbers 69, 76, 85, 90, 137, and 144. MesoReefDAO will also present its project in Session #3 with presentation number 256. We onboarded many new potential users to the space and created a workshop after the event.

11. Joined forces with Mussa: is where music, art, and science come together to protect our valuable marine ecosystems. It is a meeting point for lovers of art, science, and coral reef conservation. MesoReefDAO will highlight using blockchain, Web3, and DeSci to promote coral reef conservation. Happenings of art exhibitions, workshops, scientific talks, live music, and art, integrating Web3 and DeSci tools. Activation of the first event and first workshop. More than 8 events and 3 workshops in the Mexican Caribbean, Long live to Mussa!
12. In collaboration with LEEAC and Cinvestav, MesoReefDAO's working groups have advanced coral restoration efforts by constructing structures to support coral fragments for acclimatization, adaptation, and research. A recent workshop focused on water quality in coral aquaria and the cultivation of planktonic specimens to feed fish and corals, accompanied by the acquisition of essential lab materials. Additionally, footage of the four aquaria at LEEAC was recorded by ConexionCinvestav to document ongoing progress. While slides for the planned July operations were prepared, the initiative has been rescheduled to August due to climate conditions.
13. We pitched at Vitalia Accelerator Sprint July (as a fellowship for the program) in Roatan, Honduras and connect with stakeholders: Talked with Erika and Ed, owners of the Hole in the Wall Bar, about potential synergies in conservation to restore mangroves with Web3 elements. They have previously worked on a similar program with BICA (Bay Islands Conservation Association) in Roatan. Had a talk and tour at the Coral Restoration Center Roatan with Bessy, Becky, Indira, Andrea, and Gael from the Roatan Marine Park. Discussed the initiative and their interest in exploring options and piloting prototypes for the socio-ecological component within their community program. Link to event.

14. Met Virginia's family in Crawfish Rock. Discussed the need for the community to organize and potentially create a Cultural Centre focused on education, cultural/conservation/Web3 workshops, and productive projects to develop incentives and financial inclusion.

15. Met Suly, Don Emilio, Eli, and Tio Demas at ScubaShop Roatan. Dived with them multiple times and shared thoughts about Roatan Reefs and potential synergies for piloting projects with DeSci and Web3 components.
16. Met Antonio Cárdenas (Google & Web3 Dev), one of MesoReefDAO core developers.
17. We participated in Crecimiento - Aleph Pop-up City and DeSci Day with the mission of MesoReefDAO in Latin America: Some X posts from DeSci Day during Crecimiento Pop-up City in Latin America in synergy with AuraSci as part of the Nexus Grant Activations: 1, 2, 3. Interview and Talk.

18. An alliance with Cozumel Coral Reef Observatory!.

19. We have ongoing campaigns in Artizen platform and in juicebox.
20. We will also launch an incentive program for over 10 undergraduate students, with documentation of their projects supporting the Regen Reef Project prototypes (slide 10) at Cinvestav Unidad Mérida.

21. On September 27th, we visited the Coral Reef Nursery at Iberostar's Wave of Change in Cozumel, México, an effort in collaboration with Cinvestav Unidad Mérida LEEAC.

22. We have some activations with AuraSci x MesoReefDAO in SEA during October and November with the support of Ethereum Foundation’s Devcon7 Scholarship receipt by Rodrigo. You can see a post by one of our members here regarding the experience and activations related to DeSci and Coral Reef Awareness.

23. Reef Futures 2024 activation regarding DeSci and Coral Reef Restoration Practitioners: talk, workshop and QF experiment.

24. So what happened here? lol. Seems that we appear at Messari’s Article called: “PHDegens, It’s Time for a DeSci Update.” As one of the first DeSci initiatives based in Latin America, we are so early that it is an honor to be highlighted in this way. While our approach is not fully implemented yet, we are gradually scaling. We remain hopeful, realistic, and optimistic, and we will not stop.

At MesoReefDAO, we are committed to leveraging Decentralized Science (DeSci) and fostering innovative partnerships to restore marine ecosystems and inspire global stewardship for our planet's coral reefs. We have been motivated to act as a bridge, connecting various stakeholders interested in exploring opportunities in Latin America. In 2025, we aim to further develop and accelerate our flagship initiative, Regen Reef. Feel free to reach out and support us on this journey!
