This past year marked a transformative milestone for MesoReef DAO. We scaled our initiative with remarkable momentum, drawing attention from traditional conservation stakeholders and vibrant Web3 and DeSci communities alike. By pushing innovation's boundaries, we've sparked a new wave of coral reef conservation coordination (spanning Yucatán Peninsula local reefs, Mesoamerica's regional ecosystems, and worldwide initiatives).
Our decentralized model goes beyond theory. It delivers tangible impact via on-chain collaboration, regenerative biotech, and community-driven governance. As we charge ahead, quite eager to scale further, MesoReef DAO leads this revolution, demonstrating blockchain's power to restore reefs and reshape science's future.
Our thanks to DAO members, allies, and funders for propelling this journey. Together, we are quite eager to scale and build resilient reefs holistically, one block/reef/polyp at a time, safeguarding delicate ecosystems while pioneering technologies to avert their crisis. And yes, we are pretty early to achieve it, but we will get there.

The conference accelerated actions for sustainable ocean management and awareness, uniting global leaders, scientists, civil society, and the private sector under SDG14. We discussed with researchers and stakeholders whether DeSci and Web3 align with short-term conservation agendas. We saw alpha-stage apps for capacity building and semi-closed open-source matchmaking, plus many centralization use cases involving entities and trust funds that are ripe for blockchain and DeSci tools. These near-term implementations could mitigate the tragedy of the commons in coral reefs, accelerate research, enable incentivized attribution layers for inclusion, and address the situation happening right now:

9. Rodrigo NuñΞz volunteered at ETHcc, created a side event with ReFi Paca: DeFi4Nature, and participated in a public goods panel sharing AuraSci's DeSci ethos and blockchain-enabled coral reef conservation use cases. Also collaborated with Anderson Mayfield at ETHGlobal Cannes Hackathon: built RegenReef DeSciAI and shared POAP with attendees:

10. We just had the opportunity to visit resilient coral reef ecosystems in the surrounding area of Hurghada in the Red Sea (Hamdullah Reefs of Egypt). There, we learned about the experiences and limitations of traditional stakeholders. We also supported beach cleanups and daily operations with HEPCA.org, and conservation monitoring with the Red Sea Protectorates/Ministry of Environment (special thanks to Ahmed Gallad for this opportunity). This area is now part of a special great marine protected area (MPA) in the region. Capacity building is also needed:

11. Had an epic week at XIII Congreso Mexicano de Arrecifes Coralinos y IV Congreso Panamericano by SOMAC (ICRS chapter). Led workshop (+20 attendees in 2 sessions - 6 hrs), slides, delivered poster presentation, showcased blockchain funding (Artizen, Gitcoin Grants Stack, bio.xyz incubation), and shared recap reel here:

16. Artizen x MesoReefDAO’s: Creation of Coral Commons Fund for Reef Restoration during season 5, currently curating season 6. Also, we onboarded researchers to use the stack to create their own rounds for the upcoming season 6: Nadia from Mar Sustentable, with her round:

17. We are part of the BitBasel Space Program, and one macrophoto of Colpophilia natans scleractinian coral will travel to the lunar South Pole by 2026! The purpose is to raise coral reef conservation awareness and highlight SDG14 through a space legacy showcasing MesoReefDAO's existence and mission. This Griffin-1 Lunar Mission is part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program via Astrobotic (Astro-GLPH) + NanoFiche; SpaceX launch estimation here. during BitBasel Miami Art Week 2025 to share MesoReefDAO and AuraSci's experiences, discussing DeSci/Web3 approaches to empower minority communities, bridge the digital divide, uplift women leaders in frontier science and technology, and accelerate projects:

18. Verified REEF+ organization member of the Global Fund for Coral Reefs: building a citizen science and research network with blockchain/DeSci for on-chain coordination, transparent funding, and decentralized data, eager to scale global regeneration of coral reef conservation in 2026:

We've seen many huge milestones this year in crypto, from the State of Crypto report and Crypto Theses to advancements in DeSci.
Thrilled for 2026 bio.xyz listing and C0ralGPT DeSci AI agent framework incubation (~25K research papers compiled). DeSci must be a public good for researchers and citizen science stewardship worldwide, implementing frontier science via d/acc approaches to accelerate coral reef solutions (nature-based and biotech) in the Anthropocene!

Bottom-Up Coral Regeneration
Bottom-up effects are essential to scale coral reef conservation projects and create proper capacity building. Stewardship and community-based initiatives with citizen science elements are necessary in every coral reef conservation effort. Decentralization of complex systems among stakeholders in Web3, DeSci, and Coral Reef Conservation Initiatives will potentially create resilient coordination.
Deep/Bio tech + Nature-Based Solutions
Communities must integrate citizen science with biotech components through a nature-based solutions approach and capacity building. Proper implementation of DeSci, blockchain, DePIN, and RWA stacks in coral reef conservation initiatives is necessary to enable genuine regeneration of coral ecosystems, socio-ecologically speaking.
Regeneration Through New Stacks
We must first explore and implement solutions to mitigate silos in coral reef conservation, research, and awareness. These silos slow frontier science critical to coral reef-rich nations. These technologies promise to align incentives across stakeholders and researchers, creating regenerative blue economies with inclusive, measurable, and decentralized loops. From AI-driven research synthesis to tokenized conservation KPIs, decentralized protocols will compress decades of reef decline into measurable recovery within years. We are eager to explore more bottom-up regeneration alternatives that scale community ownership and DeSci Web3 infrastructure.
A Call to Action
We encourage individuals and entities to explore. Join the coral reef regeneration revolution! Deploy or explore DeSci and Web3 to break conservation silos and build regenerative blue economies. Your expertise is invaluable to us.
