How Not to Become a Chair

Become

** **

In the shadow, I saw a chair,

almost there, being made.

It wasn’t whole, it was trying to figure out

how to balance on three stubby legs.

It kept breaking itself trying to set itself upright.

** **

So oddly made, it twisted and splintered, it bashed itself

senseless, because chairs always chair and it couldn’t chair at all,

but it wanted to so, so much!

** **

The form wouldn’t fit so it

Stopped. Thought. Mourned.

** **

I tried smiling at the chair. It grrrr’d.

I tried moving the chair. It bit.

Then I asked the chair, “Why do you do this?”

** **

The chair lamented,

“I have no seat, I cannot chair, this is not my place.”

** **

All I could think was to say,

“You don’t have to be a chair if it doesn’t fit.

You can be whatever you want that doesn’t hurt.”

** **

Then the chair realized it wasn’t a shadow, or a chair at all.

** **

It was just me, waking from a dream,

learning to Become.
