To defend against the surveillance that is imposed on us, we have new digital tools that give us back control of what we publish on the network. When you go out on the street, you don't go proclaiming everything you do to everyone. When you go on the web and use the Internet to communicate, it should be natural for you to remain in control as well. However, this is not the case today: most of the software we use to connect has been created by companies whose business model is based on handling YOUR data, and therefore YOUR LIFE is simply raw material that they need to extract.
To the individual who is aware of their fundamental rights, there are two options left: complain and cry to the legislator trusting that he will fix this and/or take charge of his situation now.
WHY?
For those who decide to face the regulator's ineffectiveness, taking control of your data has THREE IMMEDIATE BENEFITS:
Security. Your data in the hands of others are not safer, but the other way around. Criminals are the first to benefit from these surveillance tools that are imposed on us: they know when we enter, when we leave, what we see, what we buy and where, the family we have, what we like and what we don't... with this information they can carry out the most sophisticated scams. Don't be fooled by anyone who tells you that they are asking you for data for your security. That is simply a lie: perverse manipulation.
Freedom. If you want to say something that you may not like or you fear that you may be singled out for your ideas, it is important to control how you express yourself, but it is essential to know to whom it will reach and in what way. We use the privacy of anonymity when we vote in democratic elections, when we have a coffee and pay for it in cash, when we hand over a tip... control of your privacy is a touchstone of the human being also for the most beautiful, brave, compassionate acts... anonymity is not synonymous with malevolence. This is another big lie: another perverse manipulation.
Prosperity by hoarding a rising asset. If your data today is worth so much that it can be stolen by millionaire businesses, we can consider it a commodity in high demand. If you reserve your data today, you may be able to negotiate its delivery tomorrow. technology is decentralizing business models, and your data can be a source of wealth. Isn't it worth taking control and learning to manage it now?
The tools we propose here are the ones we use at Mirlo Studio, which allow us to take back our reins, that is, to regain control of our data.
STEP by STEP
1. Cover your cameras, lock your mics and get some Faraday covers/bags.
👩💻 >>> You can find Faraday and blockers at Amazon
2. Secure a new, more secure and private email service. It is not necessary to get rid of your old emails (gmail or other) first. Keep them for now, and get rid of them later. 👩💻 >>> ProtonMail (*)
3. Start using a browser and a search engine to control your data
👩💻 >>> Brave Browser and Search engine.
4. Download a password manager to save your passwords and generate strong passwords for sensitive content. 👩💻 >>> Bitwarden (**)
5. Install a VPN -virtual private network- if you want a more private navigation. >>> ProtonMail' s VPN is just one of the best options.
By following these 5 steps, you are escaping from abusive surveillance as long as you leave your careless habits behind, and start this new stage conscious of your responsibility. The benefits are enormous, so the time spent making these changes will be well spent.
(*) To better manage your ProtonMail, it is convenient to have 4 email addresses: one for family and trusted friends; another one only for Bitwarden; a third one for banks and finances. In addition, we encourage you to start using an alias generator, something very useful for those sites where you subscribe, or you want to access temporarily but you don't always know the real reputation of the service, and you can't trust the use they will make of your data: a good solution for this is SimpleLogin.
(**) Understanding how Bitwarden works is important before starting. The login email and master password should be kept in a safe place. Once inside it is advisable not only to save your passwords but to update them with the help of the password generator, especially in the case of apps that handle sensitive data. In any case, it is advisable to have different and secure passwords for each service/app, and Bitwarden makes it easy.
Our experience has been contrasted in the Privacy Academy course, and many other sources of courageous disclosers. It is important that awareness of this fundamental right spreads, as it seems to be already happening for many.
As Whitney Webb explains, a future of slavery or Freedom is at stake, and the time to act is now, as the web still belongs to all of us. -> https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0GP3oR63HaI
At Mirlo Studio we know how comfortable it is to use the most widespread tools, simply for convenience or because it is what other people around you do. The recovery of privacy in the network may sound like an “impossible revolution”. But in Mirlo Studio we see it as the best OPTION for the future, and we have seen how a few small changes can change your life, gaining independence and time for you. It's up to each of us to choose what we prefer for ourselves and also for those who come after us.
