This series was created to share information and education about teams building in the Polkadot ecosystem. Our guest on this edition is Yuriy Sigalov, Founder and CEO of Orbiter One. Orbiter One is a peer-to-peer lending protocol built for maximal cross-chain optimization. Powered by Moonriver and Moonbeam.
Can you share some background on Orbiter One?
Orbiter One is a lending protocol focused on cross-chain interoperability. Our ultimate goal is to create a seamless cross-chain lending experience for DeFi users. Ultimately, we want to allow our users the ability to hold collateral on one blockchain and borrow on another. We also want to host the largest possible variety of collateral that is available on any lending protocol.
What is the current status of Orbiter One?
Currently, we have our isolated version of Orbiter One available on Moonbase Alpha. We will be launching our isolated main-net beta on Moonriver, in early January. We are working on some ecosystem partnerships right now that will provide different types of incentives for our early users. After our isolated protocol goes live on Moonriver, our developers will shift to building cross-chain capabilities between Moonbase Alpha and Arbitrum test-nets.
What are your vision and goals for the project, and what exciting things can we look forward to in the future?
We will be using Axelar to accomplish our cross-chain goals. As we work on our cross-chain development, we want to build up our isolated Moonriver protocol so it is ready to be integrated with Moonbeam and Arbitrum, as soon as Axelar will support Moonriver. We want to make sure that all Dotsama assets can be represented in our cross-chain experience, regardless of which relay chain they inherently live on. By the end of 2023 we want to integrate several other high liquidity blockchains, such as Fantom, Polygon, Cosmos and others.
Why did you choose to build on Polkadot, and what feature of Polkadot’s architecture interests you the most? Where do you see Polkadot in five years?
I am a personal fan of Parity and Purestake, so it made sense to work with Polkadot and Moonbeam. But aside from personal bias, Polkadot’s Cross-Chain Messaging system is truly groundbreaking. Every parachain that is connected to Polkadot (and Kusama) can inherently interact with each other. Dotsama assets can seamlessly move through all parachains, without having to use third party bridges. Not only that, but Polkadot and Moonbeam allow remote contract execution. I know I said that we will be using Axelar for our cross-chain communication, but we will also be adapting other Dotsama parachains later on, as their liquidity grows. Aside from Polkadot offering the best cross-chain environment, the Polkadot community is great, the builders always build, and it is exciting to be a part of such a vibrant ecosystem and community.
I think in 5 years Polkadot will be the most developed multi-chain/cross-chain ecosystem. Kusama will be just as diverse as Polkadot, and Polkadot will have the higher marketcaps. People should not have to constantly bridge assets between blockchains to be able to participate in different ecosystems. This is why we want to create a cross-chain link between Kusama, Polkadot and other high liquidity smart contract blockchains, allowing users to hold assets on one blockchain and take out loans on another.
Lastly - is there anything else you’d like to say or resources you’d like to share?
