Intel: exploring the green development path of computing network

Recently, the project of “counting from the east to the west” was launched, setting off a new wave in the era of computing power in the country. It is understood that the “counting from the east to the west” project will affect the investment and direction of operators in the construction of networks and data centers, and will also drive the upstream and downstream investment of the industry to reach 400 billion. According to the estimation of the national development and Reform Commission, it can drive 400 billion yuan of investment every year, bringing unprecedented opportunities to the upstream and downstream of the computing industry.

Seizing the opportunity of “computing from the east to the west”, Intel has put forward many industry-leading solutions on the construction of computing power and network infrastructure. Zhuang Binghan, vice president of Intel’s sales and marketing department and general manager of customer sales of operators in the Asia Pacific region, told reporters from all media in the communication world that Intel is willing to work with operators and industry partners to innovate, promote the sustainable development of data center, and jointly overcome the important technical difficulties of computing network, so as to help achieve the national vision of “computing from the east to the west”.

“Counting from the east to the west”

It will comprehensively improve the unbalanced layout of computing power

The project of “counting data from the east to the west” is of great significance to promote the rational layout of data centers, optimize supply and demand, green intensification and interconnection. In China, the rack size of the data center continues to grow at a rate of more than 30% per year. Large demand for computing power, such as Internet enterprises, are mainly concentrated in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the East, while the growth rate of computing power in eastern provinces such as Zhejiang, Guangdong and Jiangsu is more than 60%, but these are provinces and cities with serious shortage of power generation. Following this trend, China’s demand for computing power will be limited by other resources, such as electricity and land, affecting the country’s economic development.

This is also the strategic consideration of the “east to West computing” project. By promoting the orderly transfer of computing power resources to the West and promoting the solution of the imbalance between computing power and power supply and demand in the East and West, the computing power resources in the west can more fully support the data computing in the East, so as to improve the unbalanced layout of digital infrastructure. The goal is that by 2025, the proportion of the total data center in the East will decrease from 60% to about 50%, the proportion of the data center in the West will increase from 10% to about 25%, and the scale of the data center in the eight hub nodes will account for 85%.

The “East digital West computing” project will affect the investment and direction of operators in the construction of network and data center, build a green and intelligent data center, lay a low delay network, and form a new computing network with cloud network integration, computing network integration and cloud edge collaboration. In addition, the project of “counting from the east to the west” will also drive the upstream and downstream investment of the industry. According to the estimation of the national development and Reform Commission, it can drive 400 billion yuan of investment every year.

With four super technical forces

Meet the challenge of “counting from the east to the west”

“East digital West computing” and computing power network are great opportunities for Intel, but also bring many new technical challenges. Intel has many solutions in building computing power and network infrastructure. Intel is willing to work with operators and industry partners to innovate and achieve the national vision of the “digital computing in the East and digital computing in the west” project.

In an era of exponential growth in computing power demand, Intel is promoting technological innovation and change to meet complex challenges through “four super technological forces”, including ubiquitous computing, infrastructure from cloud to edge, ubiquitous connectivity and artificial intelligence.

“For the construction of Intel’s network, the key to the construction of its advanced technology is to focus on the construction of the East and the West. Among them, the construction of Intel’s network is always faced with two key challenges.” Zhuang Binghan preached.

On the one hand, Intel has always been promoting the sustainable development of data centers and helping to build energy-saving advanced green data centers. With the development of domestic digital economy and the proposal of the goal of “double carbon”, how to process data more green has become the top priority in the project of “counting from the east to the west”. The national development and Reform Commission clearly stipulates that pue should be less than 1.3 for the construction of data center in the future. This is a very strict requirement. Therefore, energy saving, greening and reducing pue have become the development trend. Reducing pue needs to start from the two aspects of refrigeration and power supply and distribution system, which is a supporting and joint process of the whole industry.

Intel has just released the goal and milestone of achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The advanced data center, vertical cooling technology and rack solutions have been accumulated in the three fields of data center, power supply, and intelligent cooling. We are also working with upstream and downstream ecological partners in the industry to build industry standards and reduce implementation costs. Combined with the characteristics of the Chinese market, we are helping to improve energy efficiency and reduce pue, so as to promote the construction of advanced green data centers and realize the development of green energy conservation.

On the other hand, Intel is also continuously discussing with operators how to jointly overcome the important technical difficulties of computing power network. For the deployment and construction of computing network, there are different architecture computing requirements for different workloads. Intel provides a variety of heterogeneous computing products, such as CPU, GPU, FPGA and so on. At the same time, Intel also provides a unified cross platform programming framework oneapi, which enables customers’ designs to be smoothly transplanted on various computing power products with different architectures, so as to ensure the reuse of customers’ design assets.

Three aspects

Seize the opportunity of “counting from the east to the west”

“Counting from the east to the west” is a direction that Intel pays special attention to this year. Whether for the industry or Intel, “counting from the east to the west” means a great opportunity. In order to seize these opportunities, Intel will focus on the following three aspects:

First, talents and investment. One of the goals of “counting from the east to the west” is to make more full use of Western energy, which also coincides with Intel’s goals of energy conservation and emission reduction and reducing pue. Intel recently announced the goal and milestone of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and set up a special working group for the green data center to provide better products and services for enterprise customers, including operators, while responding to the national “double carbon” policy.

Second, product technology innovation. Intel will continue to innovate products and technologies, provide a variety of computing chip product portfolio, open source software and solutions, and accelerate customers and partners
