Why Crypto Isn't Beginner Friendly: - Elevated Prosperity

Cryptocurrency has attempted to take the financial world by storm, and in some ways it has. With the promise of innovative solutions and potentially enormous returns on investment, it has definitely managed to attract a lot of attention and investment.

However, the world of crypto isn’t always welcoming to beginners. As someone who, around two years ago, decided to dive deeper into understanding **how **the technology actually works, I’ve been actively and gained some insights that I think are worth sharing.

I’ve gone as far as to build a project (research & development, whitepaper, team formation, tokenomics design, and more). This process culminated with the process of approaching VC’s for investment. And, while unsuccessful in acquiring funding for the project, I have managed to extract success in the form of insights, learnings, and experiences that can be carried forward to future projects and shared with the world in the hope of inspiring some solutions for the not-so-beginner-friendly issues in the space.

In this article, I will mainly explore the reasons behind why crypto isn’t beginner-friendly and provide insights relating to how the space could correct some of these issues.

Introduction

Cryptocurrency has an enticing allure of financial freedom and innovation. Especially if you’re a little more financially naïve. Yet, it has captivated the minds of investors worldwide.

But behind the glitz and glamour of digital assets lies a complex and often intimidating web of jargon and a lack of regulation that can overwhelm newcomers.

let’s begin shedding light on the challenges and opportunities that await those willing to take the plunge.

The Complexity of Cryptocurrency

You'll need to become a crypto detective

You need to be your own detective when in the crypto space.

The Jargon Jungle

Navigating the crypto world is like learning a new language. And even learning a new language can be easier than understanding the jargon. From terms like “blockchain” to “wallets,” to “TGE” and “ZK-somethings” the jargon can be confounding, and newcomers often find themselves lost in this jungle of terminology.

Volatility Vortex

Crypto markets are notorious for their extreme volatility. Prices can skyrocket or plummet in a matter of minutes, causing anxiety for beginners who may not be prepared for such rollercoaster rides. This volatility can result in big, unexpected losses and gains, especially for individuals who are relatively unaware of the implications that come with said volatility.

Security Struggles

Ensuring the safety of your crypto assets is paramount. However, understanding concepts like private keys, cold storage, and two-factor authentication can be daunting for beginners, which leads to **BIG **security risks.

Why Crypto Isn’t Beginner Friendly

Everybody Needs To Make Money

The general truth when it comes to any business is the need for profitability. And cryptocurrencies are no different (from a founders and investors perspective.)

Essentially, a cryptocurrency is a token that is used to represent the value of a project, business, or community. And in most cases, businesses need to make money—enough to keep them running and allow room for growth. Crypto and the teams that build and run the projects are absolutely no different.

So, as a beginner, it is worth being aware of the fact that you’re not just buying a token because it could go up in value. You’re also buying into an idea, a promise, a community, a project, a business, or a mixture of all these.

There are crypto tokens that do not hold monetary value but rather allow access to voting rights, communities and other non financially incentivised perks, but you must do your research to ensure you understand what you are getting into, and it helps if you know **WHY **as this will keep you stable throughout the inevitable ups and downs.

Lack of Regulation

The absence of robust, and transparent regulations in the crypto space means investors are left to fend for themselves. This lack of oversight can and has lead to scams and fraudulent schemes that target unsuspecting beginners. And while there are savvy users that may be able to extract profits from these “rug-pull” type projects, the general beginner user often ends up shafted, with no recourse.

Tech-Savvy Requirements

To engage in cryptocurrency transactions, individuals must be tech-savvy to some degree. The necessity of handling digital wallets, managing private keys, understanding blockchain technology, and ETHEREUM GAS FEES can deter those less comfortable with technology.

Complex Taxation

Crypto taxation can be a perplexing ordeal. Navigating the tax implications of buying, selling, and trading cryptocurrencies can be a challenge for beginners, leading to potential legal issues. Adding more complication to this is that different jurisdictions have different rules, requirements and restrictions relating to crypto taxation. So, it’s worth being aware of the rules where you live.

Scams and Frauds

Beware the abundance of scams and rug-pulls.

It’s so easy to launch a token that it’s hard to tell which are real and which are scams.

The crypto world is rife with scams and fraudulent schemes. Newcomers are often targeted by Ponzi schemes, phishing attacks, and fake initial coin offerings (ICOs), resulting in financial losses, which then disillusion them and the people they tell about their losses.

If the crypto space really wants to experience mainstream adoption before a CBDC is implemented, there needs to be a sharp and deliberate intent guided towards making the space a safe and regulated place for beginners to come into.

However, if we really take a zoomed out view on the space, we will eventually see that it is not **TOTALLY **different from the traditional finance industry. Where more often than not, unconscious and hidden motives drive the actual functioning of the machine.

The same is true with crypto, even if founders are complaining about the very thing they are becoming.

Although the core promise of decentralized finance and financial autonomy, as well as transparency still stands in the form of bitcoin. It will only succeed if project founders focus on the ways that they add value. Not just to their investors pockets, but at a minimum to the minds the users of the space.

Otherwise, the web3 and crypto space will be no different from the current state of the centralized and overly censored web2 spaces.

Overcoming the Challenges

A rocket launch is an extremely turbulent and noisy event. Crypto may still be on it's launch pad.

Education is Key

To make crypto more beginner-friendly, education is vital. Aspiring investors should take the time to understand the basics, including blockchain technology and wallet security.

Founders need to focus not just on the technical aspects of their project and impressing investors, but on how they will actually attract BRAND NEW users to the space. It’s all well and good having tech-savvy individuals involved in and using your projects, but if you are not adding value to the everyday man and woman the crypto space will just become another ironically centralized resource and technology.

Crypto newbies do not care about the new zk-rollups and GPT API calls that your project integrates. They want to know how your project will improve their day-to-day life. And if this is not a concern for founders, then it is worth reconsidering the reasons for being involved in a space that outwardly promises to improve people’s lives through the decentralization of finance and money but inwardly conducts itself just like the very system it seeks to replace.

Seek Expert Advice

Consulting with experienced crypto enthusiasts or financial advisors can provide valuable insights and guidance, helping beginners make informed decisions.

In the same way that you wouldn’t buy a house without first having the structure, foundation, and plumbing inspected, don’t throw your money into a space you do not fully understand or have a game plan for.

Start Small

Beginners should start with small investments to minimize risk and gain experience. If possible, find platforms that allow you to trade with virtual tokens such as Etoro and Trading 212. And, although these platforms are not crypto-specific, they will allow you to become familiar with how things look, terminology, and MOST IMPORTANTLY managing your emotions as you navigate crypto’s price volatility.

It’s also worth educating yourself about the general rules around money, how it works, and how to use it effectively.

It’s **crucial **to resist the temptation to dive headfirst into the crypto market.
